Dog Pillow/Beds in the shape of sheep

Whew! Try saying that quickly three times!

Although I love supporting my local small town business owner, I have to admit I love Walmart.

At Christmas time I purchased a couple of the Singing Sheepies (They sing "Only You" ) . Very cute! Caused all my dogs to do the cute head tilting thing.

Yesterday, I was in the store having photos developed and ended up buying a dog pillow. It has an indentation in the middle so it's used as a dog bed. Made out of fake lambs wool that resembles a sheep, although a bit small for a full grown sheepie.

I couldn't resist and got several laughs from those that seen Merlin or Panda curled up in their "sheep bed". Best of all the price was reasonable..20 dollars.

At Christmas I complained I didn't have any cute sheepie items and it seems like all my family and friends brought me sheepie figurines, sheepie necklaces, sheepie earings, sheepie posters, sheep stuffed animals. I think I'm good for the year now! Ha ha!

Hi Marianne-
That's neat, you never know what you'll find at Walmart.
The dog pillow sounds really cute, and I bet its comfy for the
dogs to rest in.
We are thinking of transitioning our sheepie to a dog bed.
He is doing great with the crate training, but we thought he might
be a little more comfortable. He is 9 months.

Any thoughts on this ?
Did you use crate training ?
At what point did you transition them ?

We have housetraining down well, so I'm a little concerned
we might have a relapse if we switch to soon.

Thank you...
I don't think you'll have trouble regressing.

Put the bed on the crate at night when your dog goes to sleep, then let him in using the "To Bed!" command or something like that. Any sheepie in his/her 5 senses will prefer the soft bed to the crate floor.

After a week or so, remove the crate. Your doggie by then must have associated the "To Bed!" command with sleeping in the new bed and it will be impregnated with your sheepie's scent. Something else you can do is sleep in the bed or use it as a pillow for a few days before giving it to your sheepie to impregnate it with your scent and make it a familiar item.

Good Luck!
I bet they looked cute all on their new bed!

I find target to have a great selection of affordable stuff too!! Both (Wal & tar) being cheaper than any of the major pet stores! :)
Hi Again,

I have noticed when I return home the pillow has moved around the living room so I suspect they are using it as a tug a war toy. There's no evidence of bite marks on his however.

Zahra, except for when Merlin was a tiny pup I haven't crated them. At the time I brought Merlin home I had Shaggy and Blue whom were 14 and 15 and very well behaved and they slept most of the day. Merlin would usually cuddle up with Shaggy and I'd race home at lunch for his bathroom break. I work at an elementary school only 10 mins from home and am home by 3 every day as my contract is for 25 hrs per week.

Then Panda came into my life unexpectedly 3 wks after Shaggy passed. A rescue from a puppy mill in Hong Kong (thanks to everyone on this forum that made the rescue possible). Since he had been caged continuously the last 6 months of his life , for the first couple weeks I didn't attempt it. Eventually, he got used to being in a house but this involved me sitting with him in a room and at first leaving only 5 mins at a time to get him used to it. For weeks I slept in that room, again so I could keep watch over what he did (he had never been in a house before and would grab everything) Eventually when he could be trusted he was allowed in the rest of the house.

I didn't feel comfortable leaving him alone however, so I had him outside for aprox 2-3 hours at a time outside while I was at work. I'd visit with him at lunch and then Merlin would go out too. Luckily this was last spring and the weather was nice. When the weather turned bad, by then all three dogs had been used to the house. It also forces me to be dilegent and not leave anything lying around that they can get into. I keep forgetting about the sugar bowl!! Arg!! Merlin's favorite!

As it's only my son and I, in a house with many rooms, fortunately I can seperate them when I need to but they've all chosen to sleep in the living room 99% of the time. Merlin always chooses to sleep on the floor but Panda and Blue will race to see who gets the love seat...much like musical chairs. The one who doesn't get their first always lays on the side of the couch which is where I placed the sheep pillow.

I'm probably not answering your question directly, but Saulmr gave good advice as I find , they love anything that has my scent on it. I'd have them sit/laydown on their bed while you sat next to your sheepie patting them. Perhaps even placing a treat there as with all the rooms in my house each go immediately to their places when it's feeding time with no more prompting from me once they got used to it. (it took lures of treats).
A word of warning however, I have noticed that if they are bored is when they get into trouble. A kong with peanut butter or cream cheese, toys and other distractions are great and I'd place them near the bed.

Sorry this is so long!

Thank you to Marianne and Saulmr for your suggestions
on transitioning to a dog bed after crate training.
We appreciate you sharing your experiences and training tips.
We love reading your posts on your sheepies, there is always
alot to learn !!!
They have great dog beds at BJ Wholesale Club. They have huge beds that are covered in sheep skin (fake) and look like dog couches (with bolsters). They are in Pet Catalogs for $100-$200 at leats and sell at BJ's for $29.99-39.99.

They wash well too.

Do what Danita and I do... We go to petsmart to get advise on what to buy from their staff (Some guys are very well informed) every time we go get their food, then walk across the street to get the toys and other stuff at walmart... Much cheaper and the same quality!
