weird vomiting...should I be concerned?

I guess I'll mention it to the vet next time I see him, but it doesn't seem like an urgent matter.

Hudson vomits in the early morning. It's about once or twice a week, around five a.m. (yay).

He wakes up, jumps off the bed (thank goodness for that) and vomits foam. About half the time that's when we find the penny, or the pieces of mechanical pencil, or the unindentifiable debris, or half a kleenex, etc. The other half of the time he vomits foam that's yellowish. Occasionally he keeps going until it gets a little orangy/reddish look.

Then he's fine. In fact, he's better than fine. He's affectionate. He wastes no time whatsoever and gets right down to the important matter of pukefacekissiness business. I run screaming from the room, of course. Every single time. Sigh.

And then he starts kicking his bowl and wants breakfast. We were reducing it to a smaller meal on those days, but he's been consistently fine afterward so we haven't even been doing that recently.

Any thoughts on why he's a regular five a.m. puker? (Aside from the fact that he still devours anything he can steal, including the walls?)

Riley and Bailey do this occassionally. And not on the same days.
For the girls, it seems to happen when they've had an early dinner with just a single evening cookie. Or when we try to sleep in and breakfast is late. The girls don't even bug us about being hungry until we are up.

Our solution has been to give them a couple of extra cookies at bedtime, so they have something on their stomach in the morning. No more problem.
Sounds like he just has an empty stomach?
We added a third meal right before bedtime, as Oscar was having similar issues. Worked like a charm and boy, did he adapt to that routine quickly.

Probably an empty stomache, but I want to point our to everyone to pick up their pennies. since they are now made of zinc and not copper, the zinc can react in the dogs gut and become caustic. Not to mention they can lodge in the intestines.
yorkies do it when they have an empty tum? could be that
IMO it is not normal for such frequent & consistent vomiting and you should be consulting your vet. There might be some underlying problem plus the fact that he's eating all kinds of foreign objects is not good.

We have occasional bile vomit episodes with Frank, although not as frequent as you mention. He has some intestinal problems that he is on prescription dog food for.
Euwwwwwie!! Puke face kisses, blah, I'd run screaming too.

I did have a cat who did this due to pancreatitis, he didnt jump off the bed, I would wake up and dump him off the bed, I always felt bad about it. Have you ever seen a cat puke? It doesnt come easy for them, but the thought of laundering the bedding at 5am wasnt appealing.

Anyway check with your vet just in case as I know dogs get pancreatitis but as I've been fortunate not to have it happen I'm not familiar with the symptoms in dogs.

Hope its the empty tummy though. :D
Thanks for the replies.

I'll definitely be talking with our vet. I never considered the empty tummy possibility. Poor guy. He really is starving. And to think I never believe him when he plays that up. :D :D :D
The frequency is what I get told to look at when it came to my maltese. For her, ..the constant throwing up like that was a liver problem, BUT yours sounds a lot more positive b/c you find stuff in the vomit at times. My cat does the same thing as you described when she's hungry ;)
