I'm a bit paranoid. A swim partner went to Boston, came back ill. cough, cough, cough...........and died. She was 51.

Kid in my car today, cough, cough, sniffle, sniffle......Mom says, "He's OK I came him some childrens Tylenol." I'm thinking, "I want him out of my car and I want to wash my hands!! and wipe off his contaminated area.

Wash hands often, avoid those ill. Almost enough to make one stock masks either to contain the cougher or to avoid their spew.
What i could never understand as a nurse was they didn't CARE that i was ill, they wanted me to come in unless it was diarrhea! And I worked in the NEWBORN NURSERY!

I have gotten to where i don't want to go out of my house! They say the flu is just now hitting Colorado / New Mexico hard ........... great........... hope i can stay hidden for a while!!!

Someone I'm close to works in a senior citizen home and goes to work sick regularly. She also gets sick a lot from other people at work and they also had a scabbies outbreak last year. She doesn't understand why I won't have our dogs do therapy dog visits there...
Ugh... I totally agree w/everyone.

lil J's pre-k teacher told us she was sick one day, and I thought WTH???? A nurse told a child that he didn't have to go home because his temp was starting to rise and was 100.2 yet they sent a letter home saying all children must stay home if their temp is over 100.4. Seriously... SEND THE KID HOME!
I agree...if you're sick plz stay home. I was just recovering from a two week allergy attacked when my hubby came home with a cold from work...the guy he caught it from came to work and was right next to him for three days...I was sick for two weeks. :( Since my daughter is disabled I was a maniac about "debugging" everything so she wouldn't get it. So far so good for her.
And, might I add...

IF YOUR CHILDREN ARE SICK...KEEP THEM HOME FROM SCHOOL.

Thank you.

I teach grade two. Since Christmas there have been at least five or six students away at any given time. I've counted seven kids who have come back with hospital bracelets.

In the past two months we've had scarlet fever, strep, and fifth's disease. There have also been several cases of lice, and there's a nasty stomach bug going around.

But, these kids keep getting sent back after a day or so. Or, they come to school at death's door when they first come down with it, and we send them home, but not without first going five or ten rounds with parents who insist they're fine and can stay at school. In fact, they are miserable, contagious, and it pushes back their recovery time significantly.

Oh yeah...AND IT INFECTS OTHERS....ESPECIALLY THE TEACHER.

I've had to take sick time because of it, and what did two parents say to me when they cornered me in the hall? "Well, you've certainly been out of the room a lot this term." (With that tone of voice we all love to hear.)

"Yep, it's an occupational hazard. When the kids are too sick to be here and they are sent anyway they spread germs. Nothing I can do about it. I just get the pleasure of coming down with everything too."

I know that it's inconvenient for working parents to make other arrangements when their children are ill. I'm not unsympathetic. But...when the child is ill, who should be inconvenienced? I think the parents should be the ones dealing with it, not the entire rest of the class and all their parents and the teacher when those germs infect everyone else. But....what do I know?

Sorry....I got on a roll. Rant over.
I COMPLETELY AGREE!! I have Mediterranean Anemia, and it REALLY bothers me when this sort of thing happens (because people can be really careless)....You can count me in on the first person getting sick if someone so much as sniffles near me -
We live in the middle of nowhere and rarely see anyone, but you can bet your boots when my son visits with my grandchildren, the next day, one by one, we all end up with the flu. Last time they said they were coming up I made an excuse not to be here, and after they were gone I sprayed the house with Glen 20. I don't have any bugs yet. Actually, I really feel like a bad you know what. BUT a healthy bad you know what. Each day the guilt gets worst. I agree! Stay home!
Adam and I attend a string of conventions from February through November each year. People in our industry travel from all over the country, sometimes the globe, to be at these events. We sit and meet fans and collectors, and hopefully make a little money.

Working in comics, we get our fair share of kids at these things. And inevitably some tyke that is just about table height will walk down an aisle coughing onto each of us as he or she passes. Why don't parents leave their kids home? Why don't they teach them to cough AWAY from people? We spend February through November fighting what our whole industry refers to as "Con Crud" (short for CONvention Crud), "Lanyard Lung" (because we all wear badges with our names on them, hanging on lanyards for the weekend) and "Convention Cough" (that one's pretty self-explanatory). And we know when it happens, because spontaneously across the country we all have the exact same illness!

Ali, I work in a hospital also and they want us to come in even if we are sick. There have been so many people coming in with head and chest colds all winter and I had been lucky...till now.

I blasted the person that I think gave it to me. He said he's had it for a month and can't kick it.

Yes, I did go to work today but told everyone to stay away and bleach everything I touch.

NOT ONE PERSON THOUGHT IT WAS STRANGE THAT I CAME IN SICK!!!

Yep, sad but true in the nursing profession. Better now that I'm not at the hospital, with them needing every nurse they can get.
But I still call my 2 homecare clients if I am a bit ill, and I let them decide if they want me to come in.
I've gone as far as phone all my patients and tell them I've got a bug and ask if they want to reschedule, they all decided to come see me anyway. Their theory was they'd catch it from someone at work, or at the supermarket anyway.
So now I turn up unless I've got a fever, I dont get paid if I'm not there and the receptionists hate it if they have to reschedule all my patients.
Ohhhh I remember once my dental hygienist had a cold and I complained... doc said: "That's why we wear masks."

I don't recall if I got sick or not, but either way it was disgusting to have someone with very wet sniffling swallowing and breathing sounds coming from behind a standard paper mask right up in my face for half an hour or whatever.
That's what I thought, that people would rather stay away! But I guess being a chiropractor my patients are mostly face down so they didnt care. :? 8O

Ugh.. though I know it's not their fault ....I always get irritated when someone is coughing/hacking all day and then when I'm sick and do it... I'm even more irritated knowing how much I must be annoying mr. j. Hearing someone clear their throat in the morning is the worst.
Yeah, my husband's a surgeon and they all go in unless they're dying. Even fevers. It's crazy. I'm like, I wouldn't want my doctor to be all sick and then coming to me when I'm being opened up, but it's just what they do. Although he's still just a resident, so I don't know if they get smarter as they get more seniority.

Nope, not here in Aus in my experience anyway. More seniority, more importance, more a badge of honour to work crazy hours and never, ever call in sick. :?
I think the "attention getter" mode sets in with some people when they're sick and you can't get any attention if you're home alone with no one to whine to.

Not that it would change anything, but people need to realize that what's a 'minor cold' to some, could be fatal if passed to someone with serious lung problems.
Personally, I don't think people with "minor colds" should have to stay home. *shrugs* I think unless they have a fever or something like conjunctivitis or other highly contagious things... a cold is no reason to stay home. Again, to me. They don't make kids stay home, so I don't think adults should have to. In my previous posts, I was referring to people with the flu, etc.

I agree. While it would be ideal if everyone with any little sickness would stay home, it just wouldn't work. Plus, if kids had to stay home if they had a little cold, they'd never be in school or I'd definitely have to quit work b/c my daughter constantly has a runny nose. Nothing would ever get done. Plus, to one person sick can mean the slightest hint of something--one sneeze, while others have to be full blown dying from a fever to think they're sick. How would you qualify sick?

And as for myself, I have horrible allergies, so I sound sick a lot of the time, but I'm not--just my allergies.
I'm thinkin' that if kids who were a little sick stayed home, kids would get sick less often. 8)

I wonder if we look back to the 50s and 60s if kids got sick less often?

Very good question! My son & I were just talking about this the other day. He's telling me about helping construct a "playground" & all that is going into the "cushioning" etc. on the ground. Actually was astroturf with a cushion under it that guaranteed you could drop your kid on it & they wouldn't get hurt!!!!! I mentioned that kids nowadays didn't know how to fall off a bike 8O & he stopped in mid-sentence & said "You know Mom, you are exactly right!" If all the laws had been in effect 35 years ago, I'd have landed in prison for being an incompetant parent! I let my boys go fishing together down at the local creek, out of my eyesight  . They rode their bicycles without helmets  . Yes, they went to school slighly sick with a cough or a sneeze....the same way their parents went to work in the same conditions......because we had a responsiblility to be at a job. If they were really sick, they stayed home with a parent....not a baby sitter.
As for kids from the 50's & 60's..........I'm one of those. And I can attest to the fact that I really don't get sick that often. MAYBE 1 cold a winter. I remember having the 3 day & 5 day measles a zillion times as a kid. But everyone did. But we also played outside from dawn to dusk most of the time year 'round & in the winter only came in long enough to run our wet mittens & leggings & scarves thru the dryer. As soon as the buzzer went off we were back out side! :D
As a teacher I'll say it again. If a child is sick they are better off at home. They come in ill, and cranky/crying, and learn nothing that day, and then two or three days later eight more children are sick (and stay home) and two or three are sick and come to school miserable. And the cycle continues.

We've gone through strep, scarlet fever, fifth's disease, colds, flu, lice and scabies in the last few months. And most of the kids have now been through four or five of these back to back. And the parents are asking me what is going on in my classroom. The simple answer is, "I can't make them stay home." I wish I could. But I can't. (All our classrooms are going through this. I can hardly wait for spring break so they can all stay away from each other for a week. Maybe that will break the cycle.)

(Yes, I get that childcare is an issue, but when a sick child comes to school instead of staying home that often makes eight or ten more families have to deal with the same childcare issues. That hardly seems fair.)

Sorry, I know it's not the most popular opinion, but watching these things blast through my student population is heartbreaking. (And, I've been out repeatedly because these germs have all also been shared with me...)
I'm not saying I'd rather have sick kids be able to go to school, but it's hard to justify them staying home if they feel fine but just have a runny nose.

And I know it's one of those "If the one sick kid stayed home no one else would ever get sick so then everyone in general would miss fewer days" but I just don't think that's practical in the real world.

My baby has a runny nose. Where is she right now? At daycare. But I have to work. I do take days off to care for her if she's really sick, but I only get so many vacation and sick days per year--they'd already be gone at every hint of her having a runny nose.

Oh, and my mom is constantly saying things like how she'd be in trouble if she was a mom right now. She just rolls her eyes at me when I talk about all the things I had to avoid while pregnant, or now all the baby things that can and can't be done and had.
