Crate time....again

Garfunkel is 3.6yrs and Simon is 2.6yrs old. Both have not needed a crate for awhile.

For the past few months we've had a problem with them taking things off the table, counter, and anywhere they can reach and shredding things..mainly paper during the day when we are not home. Its boredom plain and simple. I take the toy box with all sorts of fun things to play with or chew on in the kitchen(where they are gated). Works for one day. Next, leave the toys in the kitchen and turn on the radio(public radio). Didn't work. This morning(I was home) I get up and they meet me at the gate, Garfunkel with a piece of paper in his mouth. My backpack, with my license plate renewal was on the kitchen chair and I had left the outside compartment unzipped. I will take whats left and hope they can get what they need off the fragment thats not eaten.

So it seems SOMEONE needs the crate AGAIN. I know for a fact that just because I caught Garfunkel in the act that its not just him causing problems. My thoughts are that Mr. Simon is the instigator and takes Garfunkel along for the ride.

So who needs the crate? One or both?

I know the feeling! We have two sheepies Koda is almost 3 1/2 and Charley will be two next month. Koda is notorious for taking things especially food off our counter - he has never been crate trained and has never had a chewing/destructive problem. Charley...is a different story. We got him when he was about 5 months and he has been crate trained - I finally have gained the confidence in him not chew up anything. Like you I have left my backpack out and him or Koda have rummaged through it but not damaged anything. Charley has a fixation over soft squishy things ie, paper towel rolls, blankets, pillows ... he does this instaneous piranha rapid nibble thing. He used to shred everything in site, but he has finally grown out of it. I still have his XXXL crate outside, and am relunctant to sell it because of the same situation you are running into. I feel like just when I thought he is well behaved about chewing stuff, he will start again so I have yet to get rid of his crate.
At what age did you all stop putting them in the crate when you leave the house or at night?
Probably both. One may taunt the other or be even more bored if left to his own devices.
I've always crated my dogs when not at home. Usually had two at a time (another breed) but right now Winnie is our only one. Found before that both should be crated or else the un-crated one would tease the other. I've crated the dogs for my sanity - and their safety!
My dogs have always considered their crates to be "homes" and were always happy to go in and stay there. :D
I would do both dogs. One is just smart enough not to get caught.
I would have to say crate them both unless you know absolutely who the guilty party is, my guess is they both are, maybe one to a lesser degree but guity all the same.

I stopped putting Charley in his crate when he was about 1 1/2 years old...he turns two next month. But it took alot of risks, Charley loves to find things and chew them up, koda could care less (unless it's food). As someone mentioned, I would take short trips to the grocery store and leave them both out just to see how they would do, and just increase the length of time. Eventually we were able to build up to a whole day while we were at work and nothing would be touched. But on a rare occassion he will relapse and do it all over again.

Before we would crate Charley and leave Koda out but now they free reign to the house -- as long as they are well behaved. We leave lots of toys and chew bones out, and rotating them because they get bored.
