Too Early for a puppy cut?

Abbey is HOT HOT HOT already. We have had a few 50 degree days and I thoguht she woulddie. I thought, She is so pretty and wil be really grown out by Sheepiefest, but I don't think she or I can handle it. This will be our second summer and first summer with much more of a coat.

I would love to keep her in full coat, but I don't know in missouri with this humidity and heat if I should or not. She is trained well adn I wuold have no problem leaving her in the house when gone and I only work Part-time. What do you all think.

I should shave, I shouldn't. She's not in any shows except in my heart so a perfect coat is not a must. We are finally growing her bangs out and now should I cut them? Who else has the mind that flips back and forth and what have you all done? She is 18 months and getting a heavy coat. Thanks so much. Back to reading and searching....

Heart is still in full coat. I have not touched her since getting her 'evened' out last year. I know a few of the St. Louis sheepies have been scissored to about 3-4 inches----

I, like you, am debating whether give her a shorter cut. Sorry, can't give you any help...when you decide, let me know..that may get me to call for an appointment...

Heart is 19 months and is FINALLY getting her big girl coat ...V E R Y....slowly. She is getting blacker on her back right behind her front legs...I haven't seen a change in the texture, but my breeder says it's coming!!!!!

I am sooo excited!!!! NO more fuzzy, crazy, uncontrollable, """looks like she put her paw in a light socket""", hair!!!!! :excited: :cheer:
It's really never too early for a puppy cut. I shave mine down at all different time of the year. This is the 1st winter I have put it off on the 2 older ones because we had such bitter cold temps here for the longest time. As soon as I see we are going to get steadily into the 40's & 50's, those 2 will get shaved. Actually this breed can handle the heat better than we think at times. They are pretty smart. When outside, mine will seek the shade to lay down if they want to be outside with us. One thing to remember is that if you are going to keep her in coat, you will have to keep up with the grooming, especially in the warmer weather. Keep her free of mats so the air can filter thru the hair & it can insulate against the heat. Matted doesn't work. Shaving or cutting down is actually a matter of what is going to work best for you & your lifestyle. I have a boy that is now 4, in full show coat, that has been that way for over 2 years now. He's handled the summer weather just fine. My dogs are always inside when we are gone with a/c in the kennel. When we are at home, they are generally wherever we are. And there are even times in the summer when the shaved ones have the opportunity to go outside but will choose to stay inside either in the a/c or on the cool tile floors. Missouri summers can't be too much different than the humidity & heat we get here in northeast OH.
I really think it depends on the dog - I trimmed my boy down last week with 3/4 blade because he seemed hot (and it only warmed up to 40).

he is much happier in the shorter coat (and less work :!: ) I am letting my girl grow out - well absent the unexpected surgical cut. If your dog is uncomfortable why wouldn't you make him more comfortabel if you could?
I shaved Sassy down with a #10 blade yesterday. She always seems a bit uncomfortable for a few days so she has a fleece doggie jacket that she wears until she gets acclimated. :-)
Both of my dogs are kept in puppy cuts. Much easier on me and them. This year they are a bit longer then usual because...I'm lazy and haven't called or done it myself.

Simon is my youngest at 2.6yrs old and his first cut was at 9months old.

St. Louis at the end of May is HOT. Expect temps to be in the 80's
I'm leaving Tonks and Luna long until Sheepie Palooza; then they will get a shorter summer cut. Its simply too hot here for them otherwise, and they do love to play outdoors. Alot.
Well we went shorter than the puppy cut. I have a number 10 blade on my horse clippers and I figured let's give this another shot. I used to do blanket clips on horses all the time, so how hard could a dog be.

HA. Well it was harder, she moved all over. Left the ears and tail, but everything else nice and short. She was so hot the last few weeks, but now we are having a winter storm and she is COLD! Go figure. So she stays inside, which i love! Will try to post a photo. Please don't be harsh, my first ever shave down and I think she looks pretty choppy. Funny thing is I kept saying, "Whoa and Easy." That didn't work.
I clipped Tiggy as long as possible all over the body and left her head and legs long when she was 8 months old. That way I saved having to grow her bangs out later. It looked good not at all like a lion but I dont know that it made her all that much cooler. She just lived inside with the air con for summer. It did make grooming her easier though.
