Puppies for Sale as a thread?

Ron,
It's very hard to find and varify breeders and puppies, I would seem ok to me to let folks post puppies for sale and to brag about their champions / pets / Children. I know I must not be aware of all of the reasons for their not being a catagory. What are your thoughts.
Thanks Chris

Hi Chris- before everyone gets really excited- refer to our discusion on a seperate breeders forum entitled "breeding topic on forum" in the chit chat section :)

Oh oh....

I see a storm coming....
What if someone who was looking for a puppy indicated that to the forum, and then, anyone with any "leads", opinions, experiences, etc just PM them?
I understand the problems that could arise from an open breeder's thread. That said, there is a real need for tangible help for the less experienced OES buyer.
All these subjects were discussed in the thread Iriskmj mentioned. The community has been very helpful when someone comes and asking questions about a breeder or where to got to get a puppy, people has always PM each other with advise, but an open forum for breeders and puppy litters touched very sensitive issues that concern both the New and Experienced OES owner and prospective buyer.
The problem I see with this would be - there are alot of people who visit the forum (many who just lurk) - and someone may start to use this (if they don't already) as a mechanism to reach out and advertise their kennel/litters. I know it's hard to pass on a puppy that's being dangled in front of you.

I would just hope that anyone getting a reference from someone on the forum (or any other List) would not take it at "face value" and do their own research and ensure everything checks out. Even if their puppy seems "wonderful" - it doesn't mean that all puppies from this breeder are and/or the puppy won't develop a problem in the long run (like hip dysplasia, hypothyroid, aggression, etc.) which would not be evident during the first year or so. And - I may be cynical - but all breeders will tell you how responsible they are and that they breed for the health of the dogs, blah, blah, blah - even when it is clearly not the case! Investigate further (even if you got a reference from someone).

I would just hate to see this forum turn into an advertisement outlet for breeders. Also - remember we really don't know WHO we are conversing with. I've been involved with OES for a while and have seen alot in my days - I still wouldn't feel comfortable referring someone to a particular breeder - because I wouldn't want to be responsible if it didn't work out or if there was a problem. I leave that to the experts!

That's my take on it anyway! Each of us need to take responsibility for our own decisions.

Kristen
I know I know, I am in the market for a new pup and have spoken with many, what seem to be reputable breeders, some that breed and advertise pet quality some show quality. Some puppies come from champion stock. Prices vary from 500 to 1000 for pets from 700 to 1500 and up for show potential.

And finally I have written the OESCA
They have a section under http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamerica.org
breeder referal. You e-mail them and they help put you in contact with breeders who have signed their code of ethics that have current litters registered with them.
Wish me luck.
And with that I hope to close the proverbial 'can of worms'.
Chris
Good luck Chris! You made a great choice going through the OESCA for a referral!
Keep us updated!
