For puppy school we need to teach chiquita a trick

What do you all suggest? What would be easy? I hated that my childhood dog was taught to shake hands....she did it constantly even when we didn't ask her too  So I'm totally opposed to that trick.

Have any great ideas?

Stay is very easy esp. when a treat is involved. It's basic, and usually the last thing practiced in dog classes I've been to. We make our dogs stay before getting their food (1C is broken up into about 1/4C each ...they must sit... stay ...then wait until we say okay).

BTW, my new puppy shakes all the time and we never taught it to him. So you could end up w/the same issue even w/o training. I find many oes' "act" lazy (but probably really just not interested in listening) so why would they put in the extra work to "over do" a trick ;)
i was told to never teach shake until a dog matures at two (with and OES that could be much later :D ).

You could teach a spin. or if you have taught a down why not "dead"? the dog lays on his/her side out flat. after being in a down you can use a treat to lure his/her head back over the side and onto the floor.

you can teach them to "jump" through a hoop that is just barely off the floor.

maybe you can teah him/her to pick up a toy? or release it? try to think of something you will use on a regular basis and try to teach a portion of that as the "trick"
We have taught Heart, 19 months old to 'go to sleep'...(when she becomes a therapy dog...it is not politically correct to 'play dead'.. ..)..

We have taught her how to crawl...which is a moving down, so to speak...have your dog in a down and move the treat forward on the floor, slowly..as she begins to stretch for the treat, light place your hand on her tusch so she doesn't get up... "CRAWL" and treat!!!

One more pretty easy trick.. is stretch or bow....most dogs stretch naturally so as soon as you see her stretch..say...STRETCH..(or BOW) and treat her.

Catch it....We were taught to start this with a Hacki-Sak since it molds to the dogs nose. Place on dogs nose just for a second and say..'hold it' and take it off...treat the dog...after the dog can 'hold' the HS on his nose say, CATCH IT....after a few times of dropping it ,they seem to 'get it'. Now I can throw a stuffie from a distance and she will catch it...(word of CAUTION:....NEVER leave the Hacki-Sak alone with your pupper...or you will have HACKI----sand all over the place!!!!)

GOOD LUCK...keep us posted.....
I have always hated the trick thing in classes. Seems so gimmicky. maybe because the lamest training place in town does it.

Anyway, I don't do mandatory tricks in my classes, needless to say.
And theN I am always struggling to think of a trick for my therapy dogs to do. Figures!

Some that dogs in our group do are:high 5, dead dog, roll over, luring into a spin, jumping through hoops, standing on back legs, and saying prayers. My absolute favorite is Chewie's GF the prison doodle Abby's (she got lab hair and ended up in a prison training program through a shelter)
She yawns. It is absolutely hilarious. She opens and shuts her mouth, and not a sound comes out. And she does it on the verbal command. I know that one is way too much for a pup, but it rocks!

Jo - no stays in class?? really? I teach that the 1st week!
cool! I don't know. I know I"M being lazy but I don't so much care about tricks. I just want my dog to learn to sit and stay and stop biting me.

It looks like we    are going to FAIL puppy class     Chiquita does very nicely with her commands at home and on walks and even when people come over. But the only time she sees other dogs is at puppy class and she REFUSES to prove she's learned anything. NO TREAT will tempt her to pay attention to us. It's gotten very embarrassing. The whole class is focused on our failure. AND I WORK VERY HARD AT HOME TO TRAIN HER.... We don't have any friends that have puppies or dogs that will tolerate a puppy. :( What to do??? I'm still confused and scared about going to the park...how to know which dog is an acceptable introduction???

For now, I'd focus on building a positive relationship with your puppy. If you think you are going to fail, she's going to pick up on the vibe & get very confused & not be able to focus on what you want her to do. Don't feel so badly. Sometimes classes try to push too much on you too fast. Try to weed out what it is that will work for you that week & work on that. Get one thing down a week & soon you will be on your way. To give you an example.....I have a 4 year old breed champion that I just started what I call "real" obedicence training with 7 weeks ago. First I am having to redirect his thinking from the breed ring & do some of the items differently than taught or he goes into show ring mode. Secondly what makes it hardest is that 7 of the 10 dogs in my class are Golden Retrievers!!!!! And young dogs that have only had puppy class & attention class training! So these people are first of all moving along faster because they have a Golden which is an ideal obedience dog & one with a "clean slate" for a brain. But (and no offense intended as I do love Goldens) I have a breed that can think & reason! And you can always repeat the class if it would make you feel better than going on to the next level & being confused. I did that with my 1st OES that I titled in obedience. Actually I repeated the class 3 times! After the 3rd time the instructors told me I had to move on as the dog was getting bored. My train of thought was we shouldn't move on until we had everything "perfect". So listen to your instructors too. This dog of mine went on to finsh her CD in 4 trials, in the ribbons every time she qualified. Also remember....at home just work on the items about 5-10 minutes total at a time & always end on a positive note. Even if she only does it right once!
listen to Marilyn! :D :D

As for the tricks - my dogs only know "tricks" that are useful. Backup (really good when they crowd me in the pantry!), Push ( yep my hands are full and that door in front of us can be opened by one of the three dogs in front of me!), One your side (obviouslly time to get brushed), Up - accompanied by my patting my chest (I know there is a scary dog over there but we can ignore him rght here), I am sure you get the picture. thin of a skill your dog will need in the future and break it down into parts - something that can be labeled a trick.

Pardon me but
That cannot possibly be true!!!!

You're just too focused on your PERFECTLY NORMAL PUPPY to notice that they're all struggling in one way or another.

Training puppies is HARD (in a group setting - they're so busy and have such short attention spans anyway). Take it slow, cut yourselves some slack and reward yourselves liberally for every little sign of progress.

Puppy gave indication she may have heard her name before! Time for icecream on the way home!! Puppy flicked ears to acknowledge we coexist on the same planet even though what she really-really wanted was to pounce on the boxer pup in the corner!! Surely icrecream sunday worthy rewardable!!

Oh, yeah, reward her too

Honestly, these things used to embarrass me. And then there was Sybil....

Don't worry. You'll get so used to the humilation you'll hardly notice at all.

(Teasing! You'll be fine.)

    Yes that did sound like an over exageration. But 15 minutes of an hour were spent on my dog while all the others waited in a circle for chiquita to either sit, come, twirl in a circle....WHATEVER. She wouldn't do any of the above  Not for peperoni, salmon...we tried a bit of every person there's treats  Finally the teacher said for us all to go home

I really don't like being the center of attention and my puppy is killing me  I really don't see us enrolling in another class 8O
Oh don't give up on training - find another instructor if this one isn't worth your time (and honestly I thought that about some of my puppy trainers). My guys are three and still go to classes every week. it really helps as they get older to find an activity that fits them and give them some structure.

Well, the 15 minutes, right off the bat, wasn't in your favor! And I am sure when you are the center of attention it is making you more nervous & the pup is picking up on that & trying to figure out what to do to help you. When I see my boy isn't getting it I simply go back to my seat & tell the instructor & him that we will watch the others & "work on it at home". Remember, it is NOT a life & death issue that you are able to do everything in obedience class perfectly. Last week we had one girl who just couldn't get the left about turn. I felt so sorry for her because she was embarrassed. I finally told her not to worry so much as this was not something she was going to have to use alot & the easiest way to remember it was that the lead went "across your belly & around your back" & the dog & you both end up turning the correct way in the end. Break these mountains down into molehills & you will start succeeding! Do what Kristine says! REWARD your self & your dog! I was So tickled when Melody got her 1st leg (actaully I was tickled she made it thru the long sit & down!) that I took her directly to the ice cream stand & bought her an ice cream cone! :clappurple: The one time she didn't qualify (she anticipated me on the recall) she didn't get an ice cream cone & she kept looking at me like "Where's my ice cream???????". :( The next day she must have figured it out because not only did she qualify but she placed 1st! She got 2 ice cream cones that day! :yay: You need to make this FUN for you & your pup. And please remember she is a puppy! Puppy = very short attention span.

Dog shows, competition & even classes can be VERY humbling. All of us wish the judges could come & judge us in our backyards! All our dogs do their best there! I keep telling myself that the next thing I am going to compete in is a car show or a Barbie Doll Collection contest..........something where the item I am competing with can't think because it is inanimate & has no brain or thought process!
well the good news is that I found a neighbor who is coming over for a puppy date.....I SOOOOOO hope this is a good match!!!!

Then we can work on sit and come while we have the other dog as a distraction! That's what the teacher told us to do but till today I hadn't found anyone. Yipeeeee! Hope it helps! :D

I think we might do spin in a circle as the trick. What should the command be? Spin? or is that too close to stay?
Hey Steph, I know everyone has already said this. But failure! NO WAY!
Tiggy was the same and I didnt start puppy class till she was 4 and a bit months old.

ALL she wanted to do was PLAY, PLAY, PLAY. If you can call pouncing on smaller puppies (they were all smaller :D ) playing.

The trainer was really good and taught us all how to observe the puppies and let the ones who wanted to be pounced on play and how to save the others  without making them scared. The class always started with some play time. The trainer said it was just to get it out of their system and training has to be fun for them.

Remember I have a dalmatian as well, so its not like she didnt have someone else to harrass, its just that these were NEW harrassable critters. WOO HOO.

My experience was 5 minutes was too long to expect Tiggy to concentrate. We tried a command 3 times then someone else had a go, no matter the outcome.

Lots and lots of praise and more importantly lots and lots of fun. If its not fun Tiggy wont play. In fact she becomes positively recalcitrant.
Try a nearly one year old in a class of 20 odd sheepies, at a public oval with LOTS of spectators (after all 20 plus sheepies in one place). ALL the other sheepies (well it seemed like that to me) doing precision left turns etc. And Tig and I up the end bumbling along because we'd done obedience yesterday and she was bored.

EVERY time we did the stand command Tiggy did her imitation of down, BIG belly flop on the grass, I bet she was sighing and rolling her eyes too!! And for sit she wriggled her butt round behind me so she could casually lean, yep lean, on my leg. You know that teenager kind of attitude of "I so dont want to be here Mom" Much sighing and rolling of the eyes again.

The trainer was quite peeved with us. We ruined the show!

When I got home and whinged to my DH he was wrapt. So proud of our girl. He likes a dog with spunk and attitude he says. So its all in the eye of the beholder. Best advice everyone here has given in my experience is dont get too serious about it, they/we all muck up, for a sheepie it has to be FUN.
thank you so much!!! your experience really helped. I am taking the class too seriously. It's just that this last week I took 'our' homework SO seriously. I worked HARD.....and NOTHING     I was so peeved. Heheheheh.

But just got in from the play date. The older dog bit her twice and showed his teeth twice. It didn't seem to do any damage. And ended with Chiquita whining for more time with the dog. Do you think all in all that was ok? They ran and jumped and played. Chiquita got a bit mad when he took her toys but he told her no and made her obey. I thought it was good that she learn it from a dog.

Does that sound like I should be worried about the biting? Is that somewhat normal and just all in the course of things?
where did he bite her? apparently on the head is fair game to dog .

I don't like biting and usually assume it is brought on by something the puppy did wrong (yeah I am tough on my puppies :) ) they may not be fairly matched.
He did nip/bite on the head. He didn't draw blood or cause any mark. So is that more nipping?
yeah that's relatively normal. even drawing blood on the head is not suppossed to be a bad thing - in doggie land.
oh good. I feel better then.

I hope they can continue to be friends. 15 minutes of running and she slept for an hour without moving. LOL! She just got up and is still totally whipped. heheheh
There's lots of people here with better training and experience, but that's how my Dalmo puts Tiggy in her place. He always bites her head or neck he even gave her a few scabs when she was about 6 months old and being a little witch. I would only stop it if they did it in the house or close to people. I wanted them to know that biting anywhere near a human is unacceptable and they smash up the house if they get rough inside.
