Anyone with expertise on Cushings?

Our Portage has always been a pretty strong, healthy boy. Several months ago I started noticing some troubling symptoms. Initially everyone said they were just old age, but they came on all at once, and didn't fit. I did a bunch of internet research, talked to our vet (multiple times) and we both came to agree he was showing Cushing's symptoms.

All of his test results (and we've done four or five different types since the summer) has all shown he is on the road to Cushing's but the numbers aren't yet at the treatable levels. (They all indicate we should watch and wait until it's bad enough to treat.) I should also mention that most of these tests our vet did on the house. (How did we ever get so lucky? I LOVE that man.)

Portage has always been a bit of a delicate flower. Meds hit him harder than most. He responds to lower doses of antibiotics, etc. One piece of real meat throws his digestion into chaos, etc.

Currently, his hair's gotten extremely thin (nearly bald) on the back. His back end is weak, and he drinks a lot (pants a lot, too). He's been having pooping in the house incidents. Some have been when he sleeps and this is particularly upsetting for him.

He went in for a higher dose something something something (lots of H) stim test the other day, and, even if the results are borderline again, our vet has decided it's time to go ahead with the treatment. It's been killing me to see Portage decline like this.

Anyone here have experience with Cushing's? I've read a lot of positives about the responses dogs have to treatment, and so I'm trying to be optimistic (but not overconfident). Anything to watch for? Anything I should know from an owner's perspective?

So sorry to hear that Portage is not well. I cant help with info but sending you big hugs. :ghug:
Is Portage neutered? Have his nipples started to enlarge? Thinning hair and enlarged nipples can be symptoms of a Sertoli tumor (in a testicle) producing tons of estrogen.
Our Winston (1981-1995) was diagnosed with Cushings when he was about seven years old. He had bilateral thinning hair, especially on his back, and his skin got very thin and darkened considerably. He didn't exhibit any other symptoms that I can remember and against the odds, lived another seven years on regular doses of Lysodren.

Excessive thirst can be a symptom of Cushings but bowel incontinence sounds like more of an age-related problem. We never had this with Winston, anyway. He was quite arthritic near the end and eventually passed due to pneumonia at just weeks short of his 14th birthday.

We're sending positive thoughts your way for Portage. Keep us posted on how he's doing.
