Help with Top Knots and Pig Tails

this may sound silly, but I'm AWFUL at putting the girls hair in top knots or pig tails. I always get their eyelashes in there, and don't know how far down to start, or how high up. Does anyone know of a pictorial step by step?

I feel stupid asking, but everyone else's Sheepie hair-dos look so nice.

Are you doing any trimming around their eyes or is their hair all grown in there? If the hair is long, I just grab between the eyes and up and down about an inch/inch and a half-- really only grabbing the hair in the center without going over the eyes themselves.

I'm way too lazy to get the camera out now but I'll do it later if no one else does it first. :)
I was trimming around their eyes, and we've decided to let it grow out a bit. So we've got no trimming since maybe August.

When they were at the groomer back in January, she did a single top knot for Tonks, and pig tails for Luna. both looked so neat and tidy. So I know it can be done, I just don't know how. I'm tempted to call her and ask if I can bring the girls by so she can show me.

Another question; you don't leave those in over night, do you? I've been putting it up for Agility class, so they can see.

I leave them in as long as they'll stay in. They never stay tight long so there's not much pressure. The sheepdogs' topknots usually only last about 24-36 hours. Owen's get snipped out and Clyde's I just undo since a little breakage doesn't bug him.

On the other hand, when Bear has a topknot, it stays in for weeks. A regular scrunchie holds his hair nice and firmly with no pulling. I only take his out because the cords start growing together!
Now I was wondering about that too.
Tiggy fights me when I put her top knot in so its always more on one side than the other and then half out within an hour so she cant see properly anymore.
The elastic stays there till Rastus pulls it out  but it I still cant see her eyes. I think if she sat still and let me do it properly it would help.
I am letting Abbey grow out also, but worried about hair breaking or her sensitivity. Her hair is getting longer and harder to see so I need to band her up, but worried I might do it too tight? Break or damage hair?
To help keep the hair neater I use Pet Silk Top Knot Gel from Petedge. A little is all you need and it keeps the hair together when you band it. I leave them in until they get chewed out, sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes a few days
Best place to learn how to put in a topknot (yes, pictorial).

Thanks Mrs J, that helps a lot. You guys know where all the useful stuff is.
Hair gel? Mmmmmm that might help, Now if I can just get Tiggy to sit still. Mmmmmmmmmm superglue might help.

That was a good help.
I always have to wait until Dublin is asleep - she would never allow it while she is awake. Yet, as soon as she wakes up, she goes after it with her paws and we have to start over again.
I just grab some hair and put a hair band or a clip, which ever I find first. I just dont put it in tight or he will immediately take it out. No, I dont leave them in over night. I always try to take them out before I go to bed.
try putting 3 in............ YES #3 or 4.............

When i have them in a lot of headcoat showing I usually put in 2 pigtails (or wookie knobs as i call them) in the top of the head........... then each side of the mouth/face gets them wrapped like in the video to keep the beards clean. They don't like it at first but get used to it............

It's just a matter of dexterity and grabbing them before they can get away!
I leave Nigel's in all the time...I just take it out to redo it.

same here. And Chewie loves his. If it is too messy and he can't see, he sits in front of me to have me fix it :D
its now turned into a production line in our house in the morning, the kids have their hair done and billy waits to have his done! never thought i would be putting my dogs hair in pigtails in on a daily basis. i love it though!
