Housetraining 1 to 2 year old rescue dogs

Hi All,
I am thinking about the 3 OES available from a puppy mill rescue in NE Missouri. They are all males, about 1-2 years old. They have not been housetrained.

Does anyone have experience in housetraining an older OES? Have you been successful? Is it possible? How much time are we looking at? Days, weeks, months, years?

I know it will be different for every dog, but I'm just wondering. I would love to provide a home for one of these dogs, but I also want to be realistic...and know that our home would not be the best for him if he can't be housetrained.

Thanks all!
Chanda

Our family's experience aren't OES, but we have had experience with young adult dogs with no housetraining, or poor house training.

The first was a 10 month old min pin, abused and not house trained. The owners had never house trained a toy breed before (they are more difficult) and had become abusive to the puppy in their frustration. The breeder got him back, and he became my daughter Lisa's new 4-H dog to train. It was not an easy road, but he did well. We still have him, he is our little Tazz, with severe CHF for the last 4 years, and he is 10 years old now.

We had several foster bassets (I do basset hound rescue) over the years that were not house dogs and never house trained. With close supervision and a plan, they do well.

Our most recent was my husband's Maggie. She is a blue tick coonhound and lived outside chained up for the 1st year of her life. She had no concept of a house and furniture, let alone potty training! She wasn't even aware she was doing anything wrong - as she always pottied wherever she was, whenever she needed to go. It took awhile, but she rarely has an accident now. If she does, it is pee and she really had to go! She never has poop accidents. Maggie has been with our family for 2 years now. She is great, and definitely worth the effort. :D
When we got Garfunkel he was 2.6yrs old and not house broken. We started at square one. Treat them as if they were a pup. Take them out on a leash and when they go potty, praise them like crazy. Then back in the house. Outside has to be for potty only for a few weeks so they get the idea. He got the idea after only a few weeks and very few accidents in the house.

It can and has been done many times.
