another bright move by chrysler

Hmmm Chrysler is asking for another $5B from the government and as part of their restructuring plan they are eliminating three models - two of which seem to be two of their popular models - the Durango and the PT cruiser. does this seem odd to anyone else?

I work for a Dodge Dealership. Ever since the Durango was re-sized (bigger) sales plummeted. Its a huge gas guzzler. We sat with our last one for about 8 months before anyone bought it.

For Dodge, it was the best model to eliminate.

I'm still worried about my job. No matter how much money the gov gives the factories, that money does NOT trickle down the dealerships. The only thing to save dealerships is to get more people to buy cars. As it is, the factory is shoving cars down our throats, and our inventories have doubled, which means we are paying double interest to the banks that "floor" (finance) our inventories.

The gov has talked about giving a car buying tax credit up to $15,000. That would help us, and the car buying public.

I haven't been this worried about a job of mine in many, many years. And my husband works for a GM dealership, so he's in the same shape I'm in.

Pray for us, please.
so why the PT cruiser? they almost seem cultish.

the stimulus bill does include a sales tax credit (I think) for the purchase of a new car.
That I can't answer. I can only ASSUME its because they are going back to basics.

I think the novelty has worn off, and they aren't selling as well as Chryslers other models.

I would think it could be because Chevy already makes the HHR and it's basically the same car (same designer, too) so they may as well get rid of theirs and focus on something better. It's definitely the one car that doesn't fit in with their current fleet.
Doesn't seem odd to me. GM is asking for 5x that. The PT Cruiser is no
longer popular and the Durango could never compete with GM or Fords SUVs that have also struggled with the spike in fuel prices.

Obama said yesterday he isn't opposed to another stimulus bill.

Obama criticized Bush for bringing the debt up by a couple trillion dollars over 8 years (a trillion due to the war in Iraq @ $12 billion a month, not to mention rebuilding after 9/11, Katrina, Gustav, Ike, forest fires, etc.). His first month he adds 1 trillion that doesn't even address the problem. There was no legislation to stop forcing lenders to give minorities mortgages (neighborhood reinvestment act), no legislation to lower auto workers salary to make them competitive on the global market, no legislation to regulate speculators in the stock market, no money to stimulate new industries, and no legislation to regulate risky bank practices.
But he had plenty of time to take a vacation to Chicago after a rough three weeks... What is this man thinking? He is getting chewed up politically; he needs to get things on the right track before his administration becomes a disaster for the country. I really hope he can get some sack and stop acting like the political newbie he is.

So lenders should be able to redline? I don't see houses in low income neighborhoods paraded across my local news with foreclosure signs out fron - I am sure there are many but it looks like alot of $300 - $500K homes out there in foreclosure land

no legislation to lower auto workers salary to make them competitive on the global market,

ANd what legislator would vote for that? geesh we can't even limit Mobile's every quarter record profits

no legislation to regulate speculators in the stock market,

why they won't ban short selling I do not know

no money to stimulate new industries,

I do think there is money for energy and other new industries in the bill I read

and no legislation to regulate risky bank practices.

yep
I'm not sure what anyone's TV station is broadcasting, but the foreclosures are well spread out throughout the economy. Some poor districts were redlined in reverse and targetted for dis-advantageous loans. Affluent neighborhoods were redlined in reverse and targetted for all sorts of equity lines and cash-out refinances. LOTS of people bought too much house and have no reserve to weather a downturn. LOTS of people bought homes on instruments with teaser rates and no ability to handle the interest rate resets. It was insanity.

All presidents and pretty much all congresspeople were pushing for increased home ownership amongst people who didn't fit the traditional 20% down profile (or 10% with PMI), and all are equally to blame for the terrible risks they allowed our banking system to take in low quality loans. All are to blame for allowing unregulated, unrated derivative insurance instruments to hedge their positions.
I started writing this reply, and it way too long, and emotional, so I stopped and erased.

All I'll say, I'm proud I didn't drink the Obama Koolaid.
I wish Chrysler hadn't gone and messed up the caravan. I loved it before, the new square, boxy thing doesn't appeal to me at all. I need to buy a new van this year and I'll be looking for a caravan that is a couple of years old just because I can't stand the look of the new ones.
what is it with all these rectangular cars? they can't be aerodynamic in any way can they?
I'm not sure how the shape change came to be. But...let me reassure you, my dealership has lots of really nice used caravans!!!!!

They do travel well. I just took 2 dog show road trips in my friend's new one, and it does just as well mileage-wise as the old ones. Space wise, it is better.

As far as looking at it....can't help you on that one! :D 8)

I seriously hope that you meant under qualified buyers, not minorities.
