smelly dog

Hello to all,
New member here with my first dog and my wife's first OES. We got Barney as a rescue dog at 42 pounds with fleas, hookworm, and plenty of dirt. We've had him for 3 weeks now and he's up to 59.5 pounds, no fleas and no worms!!! What great dogs they are, it's kind of like having a real live muppet!
Anyway here's my question, we have shampooed him 3 times with regular shampoo and once with a flea shampoo. We also had a flea collar on him which has since been removed. He is still smelly though. He has a typical dog smell, like wet fur but a much stronger level of smell than I would expect for a healthy dog. Any suggestions as to why he still smells? He probably still needs to gain some weight. He's been eating Purina One dry and wet food but we are transitioning him to Eukanuba Adult dry only (started tonight). He's been getting plenty of exercise. He also has hair loss about the collar and a patch on his side. The vet scraped him and found no signs of mange. My guess is that he is body is still adjusting to the radical change of eating food but we would love any feedback.
Thanks,
physicsfrac

Have you checked his ears? Horrible smells can emanate from there. He could have a yeast infection or something.

Ears were my 1st thought as well.
A bad tooth can be pretty smelly too.
Tough question --

you'd think the vet would have picked up smelly/infected ears.... Does he whimper if you rub his ears (the area under the flap below the ear hole)?

Does it have a really foul odor? Maybe anal glands...

Does he drool a lot, does he have folds in his flews (his lower lip)? Sometimes it can stay wet and be quite smelly.

Is the smell like Fritos? That can be a very yeasty smell from the paws.

WELCOME to the community to you and Barney, and THANK YOU for rescuing an OES in need.
First welcome to the fourm...
I think everything is cover in the last posts.
They all hit on the culprits
Ron covered the main ones, I'll add skin infections can also result in a stinky dog. But there's you'd notice hair missing or thinning. Then there's Seborrhea oleosa where the hair is oily with yellow flakes and a rancid odor. Since you didn't mention coat problems, check Ron's list first: ears, teeth and anal glands, then paws.
I'd say ears, probably a yeast infection in there, which can be under the skin throughout the dog too. Probably a low level staph infection of the skin too.

I'd get some meds for his ears, and wash him all over with hibiclens, or something that contains 4% chlorhexidine gluconate.

I'd also add probiotics to his food, probably 5 or 6 capsules daily to start with to help get his system back on track.

Welcome :)
^^^^^^ the probiotics. Good idea. Also have a thyroid test done. We've had discussions re: thyroid and Dr. Jean Dodds here before.

Lucky dog to have a caring family now.
Thanks for all the suggestions and quick responses. We will try those. He has had his ears cleaned and that's part of the problem, but I still think there's something going on with his skin.
Thanks,

One of our four seems to smell more the the other s - he gets bathes more often and does seem to have oilier skin. but if ears are an issue they can perfume the entire dog (seemingly)
