One vs. Two OES

I am looking at getting another OES and have pretty much made up my decision on my own, but am wondering what other thoughts or experiences are out there. My current oes is about 1 year and 8 months old. He just spent the last 10 days with friends while I was on vacation, and now that he is home is seems like he misses his friends. I am at work 8-9 hours a day, so he is home alone alot. I've been thinking about this for weeks and feel I can do it emotionally and financially, but still afraid of making the wrong decision. Yes there are times I am overhwhelmed with the current puppy. I have a large yard, but small house, etc. Friends have told me that they actually found it easier when they got their second dog, but was hoping other may have some experience and advice.

Sounds exciting!!!

Now that I know my dog's temperament with other animals, I can't imagine not having a second dog for her to play with. If she could smile, she'd do it while telling me she's the happiest dog!!!!!
I'm glad you asked this question. I have always had one dog and have heard they have more fun better adjusted etc with more than one.

Post pictures when you get the second one
Hi Shelly:

We got our second OES, Cassiopia, last July. She came from NEOESR and was one year old. Baxter, our first OES was 2 years old at the time. We had the dogs meet at the foster home...just to make sure that there weren't any obvious personality conflicts. And it was obvious Baxter didn't have any problems with adding another dog to the family! He saw her and immediately tried to herd her into the van to go home.

They absolutely love playing together. We did have to learn how to get out of the way quickly as they tend to ignore most everything when they are in "play" mode. Also expect the furniture to be rearranged as they bump into it.

Now, I can't imagine how anyone can just have one sheepie.

Jennifer, Baxter, Cassiopia and Sharkey
I agree... There was a time when we had 3 sheepies living at home, and the house has never been the same!

Now we have Lennon and Sofa and they get along pretty well... There's the ocassional "exchange of ideas", but besides that, they love each other. They like to play a lot and have fun together. We are also at work for 8-9 hours a day and they keep each other company.
They are after all like Lay's Potato Chips - can't stop with just one! LOL

As long as you are comfortable with your dog's temperment - I think adding another one is a great idea! The size of the house wouldn't concern me - they are always right underneath your feet even if your house is 5000 square feet!

Maybe you would be better off with an older dog (rescue) - that way you don't have to worry about the puppy stage.

Let us know what you decide.

We've been debating the same thing. My husband wants another dog, but we can't seem to agree. I would love to have another sheepdog, but I'm the "Chief cook and dog groomer". I'm wondering if I would have time to groom another one along with keeping my full time job and 2 kids? For those of you that have two, do you keep them in full coat?
Well I have 3dogs and all of their personalities couldnt be any differnt.we have Mickey(10month old OES)he is a in your face I need, want, desire love from at all hours of the day/night,he is a free spirit, and is every bit funny as any stand up comedian. Then we have Jagger(a 2yr old collie)he is very laid back, conservitive, waits til I tell him when he can come up on my bed, sofa, furniture etc.....he isnt too sure of himeself at times due to his puppyhood, and he is very much a big brother and puts Mickey doodles in his place when he gets out of hand, and last but not least we have Eddie(7yr old maltese/yorkie)we have called him an old man ever since we brought him home!!LOL!!He growls at EVERYTHING!he is very loving,he adores his mommy (my 8yr old daughter)he sleeps under her bed on a huge alligator head(stuff animal),he loves to play, and loves to go bye-bye.The funny thing is that all this works in our home.I wouldnt change anything,I think having more than 1dog is awesome, helps make time pass alot faster :D
I couldn't have less than 2 dogs anymore! lol I only have one sheepie though but I'm thinking about getting another one too. I want an older male. I check petfinder a few times a day hoping there will be one close to me.
In my house right now I have my 2 dogs plus 4 fosters : 6m, 5m and 2 that are 8-9 weeks. You just fall into a routine and everyone gets along pretty good.

Cher,

Check on NEOESR Website under Dogs Outside of NE - there's someone in Northern California (not sure how far that would be from you). She has two now - a OES/Beardie Mix and an older OES.

If she's close by - you could drop her an email and I'm sure she'd contact you when one became available.

Under Contacts - there's a contact for Connie & Ed Stevens in Nevada - you could get in touch with them too.

Good Luck! What kind of dogs are the fosters??

Caullet -

I have two in full coat - but that is thanks to the Groomer - they go quite frequently - which can be costly and time consuming (getting them there and back).

Remember the time it takes to train a puppy too - I'd love a puppy but not sure I'm ready for that again!

post a pic! :D
I think the more the merrier! I have 2, but have had as many as four dogs. When I had four, one was my first oes, a rescue, one was my great dane, one was a lab puppy, and one was a rescued boxer. My rescued oes was a challenge, she was a bit of a spin cookie and constantly into everything, and destructive at times, but as she got older that all settled down. I loved her no matter what :)
Now with my two girls, Dancer and Sky, things are wonderful, and someday I hope to add another OES to our family, although probably not this year.
With Dancer we had some housetraining issues, she was a winter baby, and thought she should only pee on snow, once the snow ,melted her favorite place was linoleum. LOL We worked through it, and Sky was a big help, because Sky housetrained so quickly, she helped Dancer realize that the icky wet grass was not the end of the world. So I do think another dog with good habits can be a help, but it could have easily gone the other way. I think if you establish good routines as far as potty time, grooming time etc then it makes things so much easier for both you and the dogs.
We keep Lennon and Sofa full coat, and they are quite a handfull. Since we don't keep them in superfluff mode, one 30 minute grooming session is usually enough to keep them mat free, their hair flows nicely when they run.

After having more than one dog, I'll never have just one!

Cher, If you are willing to adopt an OES, you can check these two dogs in the CA area:

The older 2 I've had so long I don't know what im going to do when they find a home. It was hard enough when Pavarti's sister Padma got adopted.

Saulmr, Clarence and Fable are adorable but im looking for one at least 5 or older. Did you see Bear? I emailed Kaye about him a few days ago but she has a lot going on right now. I will wait and see and TRY to be patient.

sorry for the long post
cher
I've seen bear (well online, anyways) he's gorgeous! Good luck!

Karen :)
We have 2 sheepies also, as of last summer. They are great companions for each other, Cooper keeps Lizzie active, although she concedes to him on everything except human attention! They usually have a heated discussion on THAT one! And yes, expect yuor furniture to be rearranged while they are playing. We've had Lizzie since she was a pup and cut her coat back late every spring. Cooper's former owners tell me that he has never had a long coat, had never seen him with his hair long until the recent pics I sent them. We would like to let his grow out, but the heat and humidity of Iowa summer may be too much for him.
Good luck on finding your second sheepie, it's like having a circus in your house all the time!
