OESCA Centennial

Hello,

Every year the Old English Sheepdog Club of America (OESCA) holds a National Specialty, which is a dog show only for Old English. A couple hundred Old English from all over the US and Canada come to strut their stuff in conformation (like what you see at Westminster on TV), obedience, agility and herding.

In September 2005 OESCA will be celebrating its Centennial year. This year we will be having TWO Specialties -- SIX days of Old English Sheepdog competition in Lancaster, PA at the Lancaster Host Hotel & Expo Center. On September 19, 2005 there will be herding and agility. On September 20 there will be obedience. On September 21 and 22 will be the regular National Specialty conformation. And on September 23 and 24 will be the Centennial Specialty with 3 judges.

We are anticipating over 300 of our furry friends to participate, and spectators are more than welcome. You don't have to be a Club member to come and enjoy the fun. So if you live near Lancaster (or even if you don't) and you want to see more "Big Hair" than anywhere outside of Texas, drop in and visit. Just beware of the long, wet tongues that tend to whip out of that big hair! They rarely miss their intended target.

To help fund the Centennial we are selling cloisonné pins of the Centennial logo and Centennial calendars featuring the OES who won the first Specialty in 1921 and the 11 dogs who have won the Specialty more than once.

The cloisonné Centennial pins and the Centennial Calendars are now up for auction on Ebay. I tell you this for 2 reasons.

First -- There are good clear pictures of the pin and calendar, so you can see if either is something you might wish to buy.

Second -- AND THIS IS THE IMPORTANT ONE --- if you do want to buy either one, DO NOT BUY IT ON EBAY. Each Ebay purchase of a pin costs OESCA 79 cents in auction fees, and the calendar costs OESCA even more. The club needs every shilling it can get to make the Centennial a blast! If you want either one, contact me privately at rollickinOES@comcast.net, and I will sell it to you directly without giving Ebay anything. ALL PROCEEDS go to OESCA.

Here are the links for the 2 items, so take a look:
[But remember, DON'T BUY IT THERE! Look above for ordering info. -Ron]

Speaking of the OESCA Centennial...is anyone from here going to be there? September 19 to 25 in Lancaster, PA....if you've never been to Nationals, you should really give it a try! There is nothing more fun than being in a hotel overrun with OES, getting on an elevator filled with OES, a hotel lobby filled with OES, parking lot filled with OES and just being able to talk with the breeders, handlers and fellow OES lovers. It's heaven on earth! We are hoping to get there this year! If anyone is planning on going, let me know and we'll try to organize a "how many OES can we fit in our RV" party! : )
Cathy
Hi Cathy,

My wife & I are going with Molly & Nelson I believe. Nelson's a big boy so I hope you have lots of room!

Zach
Since Lancaster is only about a half hour away, I will be there every day!!!!

Also, I would be more than willing to host a meet and greet/precentennial party for all Forum people at my house. Let me know if anyone is interested!
Hi,

Diane & I would love to come. What a nice offer.

Zach
Not a problem! Anyone else?
Hi!
Zach and Diane! It will be great to meet you and Nelson and Molly!

It's such a nice invitation, Maxmm!! In previous years, I've worked my "portable shop" during the show hours and filled orders at night. My schedule makes it difficult to commit to anything, but I certainly hope we can make it ... or at the very least, get to meet you at the Nationals!
Do you belong to the Greater Pittsburgh Club? If you do, we may know some of the same people : )
Cathy (whose husband is trying to arrange for someone to cover his classes that week and I'm trying to find someone to come live in my house with my guys that week....and if we manage to pull this off...well, miracle comes to mind!)
I've learned never to plan too far ahead(I'm self employed) but really want to go. I don't have anyone to enter but would like to see the others. And Maxmm what a generous offer!
Lancaster is about a 90 min drive for us, so I'm gonna talk to my hubby and see if we can't make it out there for at least one day. Not sure about making it to Harrisburg first, though, but who knows? Can tell better as the time gets closer.
Chris
I am hoping to show my Hannah girl in Novice obedience there.....we're working very hard! That's our goal :D
Wow! Good luck, Hahmood!

... and welcome to the forum, too!

Any tips in the behavior section would be welcome!
she's my 3rd oes - first one I will have shown - what does "shaved" mean under my name?????
Your "description" changes as you post more. The more often you post the longer your "hair" grows! Can't wait to hear how your OES does in the show! Good luck.

Karen :)
Well, I am 'HOPING' to be there. I am supposed ot receive my 25 year OESCA pin. :D

As of right now, i am going. But my husband is leaving for a job in Iraq next week for a year, and we are buying a house this week too. (stress???) So I am hoping he will be able to fly back and meet me there for the shows. (He can come home after 120 days for 10 days). I don't know how I will handle 5 OES by myself.

Ali
Our company will be there with BELLS ON!!
I'm so very excited to be joining in on this wonderful event!! It's going to be GRAND!

Who else is going to be taking a trip to the OESCA Specialty this year???
Anyone out there...??? Anyone??

This event sounds fantastic.
Can you bring your dog with you even though you are not competing?

Does the hotel allow dogs?

Please answer, anyone, because it sounds like a lot of fun.
Most shows do not allow any dogs other than those entered.....
I will be there, and my mum will be accompanying me. She is also bringing her sheepdog, And they had let us make a reservation. If you planned on joining the event and staying, please do contact the Lancaster Host Resort in Lancaster PA. There may not be many rooms left. Worst case scenario, ask about their Dog policy. There is an extra charge of course.
I heard this year is going to be spectacular. Anything with well over 100 sheepdog's running around fly's high in my book!

I hope that helped you out. Take care.
we live about 45 minutes from Lancaster. I grew up around OES's as mother was a breeder. Recently we added a new addition to our family, not having a dog for the past 15 years or so. Maggie will be 7 months old when the Lancaster event takes place. Is it possible to bring such a young dog to this event? She misses her own kind, so to speak.
Hi, Frank & I (and possibly the husband) will be in Lancaster Thurs-Sat am if anyone would like to try and rendevous with each other. I won't be showing Frank as his coat isn't long enough, but am hoping to spend some time with his breeder to get some help with growing/maintaining coat for show. Please PM me if you want to meet up.

Looking forward to finally meeitng some board members. Mandy...?

Just FYI too - for the Centennial celebration there are 162 OES entries on Thursday the 22nd & 207 OES entries on Friday the 23rd. Should be quite a site seeing all of those fluffy dogs together.
Oh I am so there!!!!!!!

I will be there every day so we'll definitely have to hook up! There may also be another surprise in the works but we'll just have to wait and see.
Are you going to the banquet on Saturday? (Hint, hint on the surprise!)

Let me know what your schedule/plans are.
Chum and I are going to be there on Saturday. I registered her for the rescue parade. If anyone will be there for that, PM me and let's exchange cellphone numbers so we can coordinate . . . I can't wait to see all the sheepies!
If anyone wants to hook-up, besides Maxxm, here is my cell phone # 609-744-2575.

I'll be there Thurs afternoon thru sometime on Saturday. You will also be able to pick me out of the crowd.... I'll be the one with the fluffy sheepdog
Good idea!
I will be there every day, barring any unforseen happenings  , so if anyone is coming and gets lost or is there and needs Central PA info, like where to eat and such, let me know. Or if you're wandering around and need a buddy...

The Centennial started today! Long day, too tired to right about it. Everyone is super nice!!! I took pictures too but since I just got the camera for my birthday, the software's not loaded and I'm going back tomorrow super early so no pics yet, hopefully tomorrow!

I'll update soon! So many sheepdogs!
I've set up a special folder at the photo gallery just for OESCA pics!
How fun! Can't wait to see the pics!! :D
Standby people! Pictures of Agility, the Top 20 and today's competition are on the way.
I am planning on going tomorrow but I don't really have a sense of whether the judging would still be going on and what time would be good to be there. Let me know if you have any thoughts. . .
Judging is morning and afternoon. Rescue parade at 1200.
Photos uploaded to photo section. Sorry - photos aren't that great. Mandy had the better camera so I can't wait to see her shots. And it was very nice to meet Maxmm in person. (Couldn't find you to say goodbye when I had to scram out of there to get back home.)

Kudos to OESCA for doing a great job putting together the event. Mandy (Maxmm) seemed to be working the whole time. Everyone was really nice and it was so cool to see so many sheepdogs together in one place.

It was great to meet all of the international sheepdog people too. Met people from the UK, Canada, Japan & quite a few people from Austrailia.

And Frank only barfed once on the trip - 15 minutes before we got home. He is sacked out big time now - I hope he had fun. And many thanks to Catherine & Julie for helping me with the show grooming.
Verveup-

Thanks for posting the OESCA event photos, you got some
great shots. Looks like fun! Frank looks like he had a nice time,
looks like he needed a rest after the shock of seeing
so many sheepies in one place.

Thanks for posting the photos ! :D
Nice meeting you too Deb! Sorry I was in the middle of lunch at first, they didn't unshackle me from the table for the first 3 days and any port in a storm. The last 2 days were spent grooming and learning. When you get an opportunity like that you have to jump on it!

I'll have to go look at your pics. I'm stuck at work today but I hope to get my stuff up this afternoon. I think I ended up getting a lot of the same types of shots over and over again, most of which were from behind a table or through dog fur!
The pics are great! thanks for posting them! I love seeing so many oes in one place, and the show hall is set up beautifully too! I love the banners... does anyone know who painted them?
Here's my answer since I can't remember her name: Same chick that did them last year (In fact same banners as last year) and one of her 16x11 works cost $550.00. That's all I can remember. I will check the catalogue to see if they printed the info.
I can't believe that, in my excitement, I forgot to bring your phone numbers! Chumley and I were there on Saturday and we even were in the rescue parade -- but I didn't get any pictures of it!! I did get one of her before we went in the ring which I will post later. You can catch a glimpse of her wearing a yellow tool belt in the background of one of Deb's pictures. I could not believe the impact of seeing SO MANY of the most adorable dogs all in one place. The show dogs were incredible. I also loved the family came with one dog dressed as a lobster and one dressed as a fisherman. It was a wonderful experience to be in that room. WOW.
Hey Valerie, I did see you and Chumley with her rockin' toolbelt on! Unfortunately I was running around like crazy and didn't know it was you until they announce your name and location during the parade. By that point I was about a foot deep in sheepodg fur and couldn't get away. Doh!!

She did look great though! You got a heck of a round of applause too, congrats!
Thanks! I was totally stunned by the applause and wasn't quite sure if something else had triggered it. We were there with my friend and his very old chocolate lab (also a rescue but many years ago). Karen et al were kind enough to let winnie come into the ring so I thought maybe they were clapping for her. The toolbelt was a last minute donation from my friend because I didn't come prepared with a costume then I felt kinda lame when there were so many others decked out. It was all such a blur -- went by so fast. The people there were incredibly nice. I was very touched by all the kind words Chumley received. And I could not get over the gorgeous giant puffballs everywhere. . .
Hi Val, I was trying to get better pix of you & Chumley too but I wasn't in a very good position to get a better photo & I had Frank hanging off of my other arm. Where were you guys hiding before the parade? I was looking around but didn't see anyone. Sorry I had to cut out of there right after the parade - had to be on the road by 1pm.
She was hanging by the concession stand.
WOWOWOWOWOW!!! How fun that must've been!! I love the pictures!! :D
Wow - what great pictures! Looks like such a fun time!
Much to Ron's horror I still have over 100 to go through and post!
Oh Mandy,

What great pictures! :D It looks like so much fun.
Thanks Mandy for the photos. Were there many spectators at the agility trials? I see also they let the dogs in the hotel for the top 20?!

I also would like to comment on the one photo that you have of the paintings. That woman was very talented and she hand painted OES portraits onto the backs of a ton of chairs that were part of a donation gift for the Centennial. It was great seeing the chairs with all the different OES faces around the expo.
There were about 3 spectators at the agility trials. It was technically move in day so not too many people were set up and ready to go enough to come out and watch. There were some very nice Australians there. They thought it was pretty funny to see everyone running around like that!

Dogs were allowed in the hotel, just not in the lobby. There was a wash area down in the bottom area of the hotel, originally a meeting room. They brought in a tub and extra long hoses and then covered everything, floors, walls pillars, in heavy plastic. I wish I would have gotten a picture of that!
Wow! The pictures are excellent Mandy! Magraw is absolutely stunning! The markings on his butt are the best!

I cannot believe I missed all the fun! But the pictures sure make me feel better!

Gucci says he's not TOTALLY jealous of his brother Magraw...but I think he is a little bit!
Here is an article about the Centennial from the local newspaper. http://www.pennlive.com/search/index.ss ... ing&coll=1
Yay! More pictures! They are awesome. Thanks Mandy!!
Hi all. I was so busy I didn't even get to see anyone there. WHAT a fantastic fun show it was. Everyone (dogs and humans alike) in their glory, looking gorgeous. The food was outstanding and the shows and decorations............ well they outdid themselves!

I would like to say that the banners were done by Karen Fischbach. Weren't they fantastic! The chairs etc. were all done by Betty Bradley. Betty has been around OES for as long as I can remember and I am blessed to have a wonderful painting (oil) of her's here in my house.

I am also pleased as punch that my girl Delilah brought home an Award of Merit, the 4th one placed out of 10 out of all the BOB specials at the Centennial show! As Baaaaaaaaadddd as she was that day, the judge did recognize her for her quality and not her 'elastic gate' (more like a rubberband that day) for how she behaved!

If I can find where the photo's go I will post her AOM photo.

Ali
Congrats Ali! :)
Here is the Russian take on the Centennial. Plenty of photos! http://www.bobtail.ru/text/show/100.htm

& congrats Ali
