Why is Mequpak not like his mommy when it comes to food?

Boggles my mind!!!!!!! He doesn't want to eat his lunch. :( He's not even really hungry at dinner, so I feel bad for him ...like he's not getting enough food. I practically force him to eat his food, so he's getting at least 2.5C a day.

I always thought everyone in the family [minus hubby] would have my genes and eat until their pants need to be unbuckled. What's wrong w/this dog?

You know what his treat is ...to get him to come inside instead of me chasing him around the yard to get him to come back??? WATER He won't stop drinking water. Now we only let him have a little at a time. ...like it barely covers the bottom of the bowl [b/c he'll throw up w/any more], BUT he really really can't get enough. We remember Yuki always drinking until the water is gone or even until she threw up, but he really acts like he needs it to survive. He will drop any bone, treat, food for it. He knocks everyone down and no "no, sit, stay, leave it" [which he knows well] work for more than a mili second before he's moved Yuki out of the way to get some.

I can't emphasize the amount of water he ends up taking in ...in a day. He even tries to grab all the cups on the table!!!!!!!!!!! (which is NOT okay and we've been working on the training but he's like Yuki and sheep when it comes to water... disappointing or not listening to commands he knows is worth any punishment he'll get if it means even a lick of water)

Is he sick or is this all normal?

Puppies are weird with water sometimes. Clyde was like that and we had every possible panel of tests run on him only to find out he was just really into water. It might be worth it just to calm your mind, too, though. There is always the possibility of diabetes or other weird things so even though it's probably fine, I always like to err on the better safe than sorry side. In the mean time, can you maybe give him ice cubes to slow him down a bit? That way he could munch the cubes if he wanted them or drink the water as it melts.

Foodwise, is he underweight? Is his poop looking normal? Those would probably be the first two things I'd consider. Maybe he just really hates the food. Does he like Yuki's? Owen got really fussy about the puppy food he was raised on after he tasted what the other boys ate (he would steal some every chance he got). Luckily, he got so big, so fast, the breeder said we could take him off puppy food at about 5 months so that made life a lot easier. He still steals, though. he'd rather steal Bear's food than eat his own. He's a weirdo.
dreamer is opposite he gobbles down his food so fast i am so scared he never just chews just gobbles .. now duffy sound like your pup .. i could never get him to eat and he would just keep drining water 24/7 now he is a yr and the pup has helped he does it alot better now .. guess he knows the pup will eat his food! i would not be worried maybe try and put some can puppy food in with his dry

Wow, Mrs J!! I never realized you gave birth to a puppy!!! 8O

You can always give his breeder a call and ask him about the dog's actual mom and the rest of the family. There may be some clue there.

A lot of young dogs, males in particular, go through stages when they don't seem to eat much. The water thing is a little weird, but a number of people on the forum in addition to Jill have made mention of similar predilections, so it's probably normal. Mine seem more apt to play in it than become fascinated with drinking it. Snorkeling and face dunking is also popular among some. (Anyone have one who enjoys blowing bubbles?   )

Like Jill said, puppies can be weird (in a lot of ways  ), though it wouldn't hurt to ask your vet about it.

Chewie is a water boy too. Drinking it , playing in it - water is his friend. Thankfully, he never has puked it back up. Whatever he drinks stays in him. :D

We have the similar food issue. He liked the food, just didn't eat much. He even walked away from his bowl and didn't care if the other dogs or even the cat ate it.

I struggled to get more than 2 cups in him for the 1st 2 years. I really wouldn't have cared that much, but with showing him, the judges really won't place a scrawny dog. It would slide when he was obviously a puppy, but not as he got older.

Now he's almost 3, and he started eating 4 cups every single day in the last few months. Like a switch flipped inside him. He finally broke the 70 pound mark!!!
well we never had an issue with him not eating - but Morgan has a water compulsion. Marley loved to play in it and flip the dish all over 8O
Some dogs are just self monitors. They know what they want to eat and it doesn't matter what you feed him. He could be holding out for something better......."I want chicken, ribeye, please."

Right now I believe he's in a phase. If all else is normal.......poop, energy, etc I'd relax and realize he may be a Chewie 2, just into water and will be a smaller boy until he hits 2-3 years old. Of course next vet visit have him tested for diabetes, but probably not a problem.

I had a Great Pyr who was a A #1 finicky eater. Only way I could get extra food in her was to feed her a raw diet (which she LOVED) or give her fish every so often......like a 1/2 can mackerel. She truly was the oddity in this family......imagine someone, upright or 4pawed walking away from food.

Remember, M-Pack could be teething and it just HURTs to chew.
Neither Tonks nor Luna were big food eaters. Even now they'll sometimes leave portion of their meal and eat it as a snack later. But both girls are REALLY into water. Tonks will drink like there's a drought coming and she's a camel. At the park I restrict how much she gets for fear of bloat. Luna will play with it in the bowl, and both will swim in it, play in it, frolic in it, if there's enough of it to climb into.

I have one! Mariah, the singleton. She used to put her entire nose in the water bowl & blow bubbles when she was younger! We attibuted it to the fact that she had no idea how BIG her nose was. That was always the 1st thing everyone commented on..."look at her nice, BIG, black nose!" Cathy always said if she were a human we'd have had a nose job done on her!
I have Bella...who would eat all day, and Nigel who never finishes his breakfast without coaxing. He usually eats dinner, but most of the time he will leave 20 pieces in the bowl. He is so spoiled...if I hold the bowl he will finish. He is 20 months and around 70 lbs and I can't get him to eat more than 2 cups a day.

I do notice when he gets more exercise he will eat a little more enthusiastically. When Bella is bugging me for breakfast...he is headed back to bed for a while. Lazy boy.
If he seems healthy and not thin I wouldn't worry about it :) It's good that he's not all crazy for food, then you know you won't have any food aggression issues.

Re water... I've had water crazy dogs too, it's annoying because then it's hard to leave water out all the time for any of the dogs, because one always slurps it down and then barfs all over the floor. LOL
I err on the side of caution...vet check for diabetes. Its very simple, little stick for blood.

When my golden, Taylor was a pup I had him checked for diabetes because he drank so much.

If the not eating much is new, again, err on the side of caution and drop off a stool sample to check for worms. If its ongoing its probably just the dog. If he's not skinny he's eating enough... for him.

Mad didn't even have that excuse. She just enjoyed playing with her water.

Oh Thank Heavens for this question and answers. Its been a while (13 years) since we had a sheepdog puppy in the house and Buffy is an absolute water fiend. She tips her bowl up and lays in the spillage, she puts her front feet in and splashes water out,she never ever just walks up and drinks,at the very least she stands her front feet in first. She will go to sleep with her face in the waterdish,I was terrified she would drown. But she drinks it down (or splashes it out) to a certain lever then puts her chin in and goes to sleep.I really was worried she "wasnt that smart"lol.
She eats well but she never rushes to her bowl like our other dogs, they act like the end of the world is nigh so better gobble this last meal down.Buffy will have a look and a sniff, spy the waterbowl and go paddle,I often have to aim her back at her food, and she does end up eating most of it.If all else fails,I put one of the other dogs out with her and she then has to eat so they wont pinch her food.Nothing like a little healthy competition.
