The Importance of Dental Exams!!!!!

I hope everyone understands the importance of dental exams.

I'm a vet tech so I see problems everyday, and this week I found a very bad problem.......................and it's with my dog.

My shar pei had a dental 4 mths ago and everything was fine. (all my dogs get dentals every 1 to 2 years or as needed.)

He has had really bad breath for about the last month. I just couldn't believe it was bad again so soon after having his teeth cleaned.

I took him in on tuesday and we put him out to check inside his mouth. I thought maybe he needed a tooth pulled or something. He had a small amount of tarter again so I cleaned one side and when I turned him over to clean the other side............there it was.

He had a tumor about the size of a golf ball under his tongue. We removed it with the lazer and sent it off for a biopsy.

The results came back last night and they were not good.

He has melanomas cancer. The report said we did not remove all of the tumor, which means its inside the tongue. He most likely doesn't have more than 6 mths left.

I just can't believe it!! I keep hugging him and telling him I love him.....I can't stop crying.
At least I have some time left with him.

I can't say much more right now, I need to tell Nikko I Love him again.

That's terrible!!! Sounds like you've been doing more than anyone else could possibly have done -- how many other folks would have taken their dog to have their dental work done again after such a short time?

I hope you get some good quality time in and everything goes as good as can be expected.

We're here for you.
Oh Hannah! I'm so sorry!

You are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope the outlook is better for your Nikko than they suspect. My heart goes out to you.

Thanks for thinking of everyone else (with the advice) in your time of pain.

Kristen
Oh I'm so sorry Hannah! You really did do everything you could....
*hugs*
I'm so sorry to hear about your fellow. Give him a hug for all of us too.
Hannah,

Oh, how very sad for you! Thank you, too, for alerting all of us to the problem. That could not have been an easy thing for you to do so soon after the diagnosis.

I will keep you and Nikko in my thoughts and prayers, and will pray especially that he doesn't suffer. Big hugs to Nikko.

Chris
Hannah...

I'm so sorry to hear about your little boy- This is a reminder to all of us that health problems can lurk in very unexpected places. I hope for the best for you and your little pup.

Karen
oh this is terrible news,
im so sorry for you and your boy
walter and i will keep you in our thoughts
Thanks to everyone that read this post. I've finally stopped crying!

Nikko will be going back on friday to reck under his tongue for anymore growth. Just in the past week a lump has come up between his eyes that is dark pigment. This will most likely be cancer, because it affects pigmented skin.

We are going to do x-rays also.....reports show it usually starts in the lungs and then moves to other parts of the body before being noticed.

He seems to be as happy as ever, which is good. My extra amount of love is making him paranoid. He just looks at me like....."I didn't do whatever you think I did lady."

Anyone that has ever owned a Shar pei will understand how funny and odd they can be. We call then aliens at work because they are a strange breed for sure. I've never seen another dog that can stare into space or at the wall for hours at a time. No, there is nothing wrong with him, its just what shar pei's do. But I love my little alien anyhow!!

Oh well, thanks again for reading this post and thinking of Nikko.
Many hugs and support to you. Most people just don't understand that the 4-leggers are more than just dogs, they are so much a part of you and your life.
Oh my god Hannah I am so sorry you are going through this. *HUG* Give your dogs lots of love and kisses from me. I wish you the best, losing a pet is like losing a child, I wish we never had to go through this part of life but if it's any consolation, at least he's had a happy one with a loving family. You're doing the best you can do. *HUG*
Hannah-
We are sorry to hear of Nikko's recent diagnosis.

Hi Hannah,

I missed this post earlier as it been posted in Grooming instead of Medical.

I feel so badly for you and how terrible it must be to have to go through this. My heart goes out to you and Nikko.

I was just at my sisters on Sat and ironically picked up a pet mag that covered tumors in the mouth, or otherwise I would never have thought about it. Your post too helps keep others alerted to this.

Please keep us updated and I'm keep you in my thoughts.

Hugs from Marianne and the boys
