Hair clumps left on the carpet (not after brush)

We have been noticing that Maggie (2 yrs.) is leaving clumps of hair on the carpet and on the linoleum in the kitchen. I am not talking about the floating hair that comes off after a good brush, but random full-coat clumps that are NOT mats. The clumps look like someone grabbed, ripped, and left it on the floor (and we haven't...really!). I wouldn't be so concerned, except it happens almost every night in our room and day in the living room...and there are normally 3 or 4 sets of clumps each. They are in places where she hangs-out a lot, but why would there be large clumps? I do pin-brush her every 2 to 4 days and she gets a full-comb once a week.

Am I overreacting or could this be a medical or nutrient problem? She eats Canidae all-life stages and gets about 2 to 2.5 cups a day and doesn't get a great abundance of treats or human food (except some cheese every once in awhile).

Please help me figure out why my dog is losing her hair so I don't pull mine out!

Sounds like she is scratching? Maybe a flea or dry skin?

You may have something there....she is a scratcher, especially with the weather we have been having. We just got a humidifier yesterday, maybe that will help.

THANKS!!!!!!
The only time i noticed anything like that with Obe is when i had to put on flea and tick preventive, visiting family in southeast. i have tried different ones and they all have the same effect. They cause some serious itching on his back around shoulders and i get clumps of hair like you are talking about. After it wears off (a month) he is fine and the scratching stops.
Marley did that last spring just before she came into season - she basically blew her entire undercoat. I have witnesses - no undercoat at all for a few months :D
Summer does this when she has an itch, I go round picking up clumps of hair and she was brushed thoroughly yesterday as my arms will testify!
Examine the areas of skin where she scratches, we have had Archie going through a stage of scratching (and licking where he made himself sore), both the breeders and our vet advised changing his diet, he was still on Purina Pro Plan Puppy, we are now transistioning to Adult (James Wellbeloved as easier to acquire).

The Vet would prefer it if it were fleas they could find none, we haven't had any evidence at home yet either, as fleas are easier to treat than allergies.

We gave him another frontline treatment as well as our two cats just incase, and he had a cortisone injection to ease his scratching.

One thing I noticed with grooming him was a waxy buildup at skin level, probably the oils drying out?.

Currently I am stripping his undercoat as kindly as possible.

He isn't scratching as much, he still scratches the back of his forelegs but I think that is his puppy fluff tangling (from the river playing), he is making matts faster than I can remove them 8O
