Constant Licking

Milton has developed quite a licking habit. At night when we're watching TV he circles the coffee table and licks it constantly. When we tell him to stop he lays down and starts licking the carpet.

Once he's tired of the carpet he'll get up and lick the couch and then start on your knees or feet.

What's with all the freakin' licking!!

And rarely do we eat out in our living room where the couch/coffee table is so I doubt very much his constant licking is due to food particles!

Maybe he has a toothache or an earache?
Or a yeast infection somewhere on his chin or something?
Summer licks when she is bored usually the yorkshire terrier! We usually give her a big rawhide stick, only under supervision though.
I don't have any answers, but Barney licks all the time too. Usually himself, but he also licks the coffeetable (maybe he likes the taste of Pledge?), and the carpet too...I thought the carpet was because it's somewhat shaggy and I thought maybe he was getting confused...

Patch is a carpet licker - when i moved last year the realtor asked me what the white spots were on the new carpet in the bedroom and i told her Patch's licking. It looked like someone spilled bleach. She isn't as bad here at the new house. Ron made a good point, she may be licking something else because she can't get to her ears, etc. Or maybe she does like the taste of pledge.
If you can't find an underlying medical issue, then you might be looking at a behavioral one - like obsessive compulsive disorder. If he were licking one leg, or a paw, you might be dealing with a skin or joint problem, but it sounds like he is licking everything but himself, and licking.....and licking....and licking.

You might try to distract him from the licking by playing with him, or doing a little mini training session, something to break the spell. Or maybe give him something he can gnaw on or work at, like a kong with peanut butter in it.

Laurie and Oscar
George licks, too. He doesn't chew things he's not supposed to have, never has.....but he loves to lick. He licks walls, floors, people, the cat (when he can), himself, basically anything he can stick his tongue on. Guess he's flavor oriented, lol. I won't complain though, he's never (knock on wood) chewed up anything.
