Worst Handler EVER

I don't know if it was just tonite or if I deserve that title.

Simon is very FAST. Witch means I have to be faster. I tried so hard but he kept getting if front of me, beside me or I just lost him trying to do crossovers.

To make matters worse...Mr. Duh dog(Garfunkel) is hitting everything right the first time. :?

Ahh we all have our days :D

not to be a broken record, but what kind of foundation work have you done? even a very fast dog won't get "ahead" of you if your handling system is working. he will work out infront of you - but will be connected to you and working off your commands. if you are just being told to run next to him and point out obstacles - you probably need a new system.
What does he do when he gets out ahead of you? Take the next obstacle? If so, you're fine.

If not, he's not getting your body language, but you don't have to be right next to him either. With Mad I never had a prayer of being anywhere near her, so ended up working her more at a distance, i.e. my handling path was fairly lateral to hers, but often 20-30 feet away and some times more with obstacles between us, meaning I could take short cuts. With her running much more yardage than I needed to, we could keep pace with each other.

You'll never be able to outrun your dog, so if he's not reading you, you need a different approach. What crosses are you losing him on? All of them? If so, he doesn't understand the cues for the crosses so

(a) you have to learn how to show him that you're going to cross and
(b) he has to learn what those cues mean.

Or he could just plain not be paying attention to you. It's not hard to be fast when you're just running for yourself  Even belle put in some impressive sprints to grab obstacles here and there when she was in the mood

When are you coming to a run-thru??? In fact, what are you doing this Sunday? The training group that I do drop-ins with is renting the training building where I normally train this Sunday so it would be more than a run-thru. Bring both boys and we can try to figure out what's going on with Simon and you. I'll double check on times. Plus you'll get them on new equipment and at a new place.

assuming the next obstacle is meant to be taken - if he needs to come back and take an obstacle on the right or left it may cause a problem  been there done that

what she said :D that is what I meant about handling system

when Marley "self rewards" by taking obstacles before or after class she can be a speed demon :D

Well, the next obstacle is the next obstacle, no matter where it is, and in front of you can mean MANY things to a sheepdog... Unfortunately, only the handler normally knows exactly what the next obstacle is, except in Sybil's case since she's learned its just easier to do it herself

Ain't that the truth. Sybil really isn't obstacle focused which is so weird for me. She is very handler focused and actually expects me to tell her where to go which is a heck of a lot of pressure, especially since she studies my body language for every little hint of a cue and then actually does what my body tells her 8O , which is a bit of curse really for a handler of my caliber    But it's forcing me to become a much better handler and extremely concious (at least in theory 8) ) of my flapping arms and decelerations and so on, so I really should thank her for that.

Yeah. well, we still have to see if the weather will cooperate for a change. We have windchill advisories for tomorrow down to the -40s threatening Macy's class. I can still do Sybil's private, I'm sure, as long as my car is still running at that point

This has rapidly become a very tedious winter <sigh>

That said, you may have fun stuff going on in your neck of the woods that you don't even know about yet!

It remains to be seen if Pam takes advantage :P . Fun group of people. She should.

the more I learn - the more I realize I don't know :D :D :D
Apparently I don't support her enough with strong enough arms - they need to come up from the bottom not out from the side - 8O 8O 8O and they need to be supportive :? :? :?
and I want to do this to myself because.........
