Barking

Hello Everyone,

I have not posted here in a great while but do check in from time to time. Kayla our two year old OES is doing well, and really is trying to be a good dog. We have only two lingering issues with her and that is jumping on strangers (she is nice and just gets too excited) and the barking direct at us, which is what I wish to get some advice on.

Kayla is not much of a barker regarding car doors slamming or knocks on the door or anything else for that matter, but she does direct her barking at us directly and I just want to know how to reduce this particular behavior.

Say we get home and deceide to sit on the couch to watch TV Kayla will get anxious and start barking at us, and it will not stop. Same with dinner table or anything else we do. If our daughter is sitting at the dining room table doing home work, she gets barked at. If I am on the computer, she will bark at me. You get the picture. I tried in the past to yell, scold but it has not worked to correct this so she just gets put in our room alone as punishment.

My new hope is just ignoring it all togther. It has been very hard to do as her bark is very lound and can get very annoying. Do you all feel thins would be the best remedy? I am hoping after time she will get the picture but just wanted to know what worked for any of you.

Thank you in advance.

Jay

Our puppy is a barker. Man, is she a barker. Here's what we found works and what doesn't:
Doesn't work - scolding or going to her to try to get her to stop. What she wants is attention. Any attention, even negative attention, is attention!
Works - redirecting her focus onto a toy, or a chew.
Works - giving her LOTS of excercise.
Works - creating a structure that allows a good amount of human attention including exercise and play.
Works - chews, pig ears, etc. that re-focus her from her attempts to get attention through barking.
Winnifred is still a work in progress, but those are a few tips. She still barks but we've found ways to help control that behavior.
tired sheepies are quiet sheepies :)
Hmm sounds abit like Archie

I think kayla is trying to ask or tell you something, boy does their bark cut right through your skull 8O

Finding out what is the tricky part
what i do is point my nose (snout ) and eyes at the ceiling and assertively say " AWAY "...works for me an my bear

You said it!!
Charlie is a barker! High pitched, screeching! We've tried everything but, like you, nothing has worked. We've tried the redirecting to a toy but it only lasts for a second. It usually happens when we're sitting down to eat, watch TV later in the evenings, whenever we're "done" for the day and are in no frame of mind to go out in the cold for a walk. We'll have to start scheduling the walk earlier in the day.
After 11 Sheepdogs I thought I was certain of my facts in telling people "Sheepdogs aren't barkers".

Then I got #12, Toby. I don't say that any more.

Toby barks when ever Charlie, my other OES gets attention and he isn't. Charlie completely ignores him. He even seems to revel in the fact that he is getting attention while Toby complains. Nothing works with Toby when he goes off, I have tried ignoring him like Charlie does, scolding, putting him out, making him lie down (he flips on his back and continues to bark upside down until he gets his stomach rubbed or I relent and give them both a cookie). Which I admit I will sometimes do just to shut him up, even though I'm know that either solution just reinforces his antics.

I'm pretty sure this behavior was learned during his first year when he was owned by a family who kept him outside and gave him little attention. He probably learned that barking was the only thing that got him any. Now the behavior is ingrained and I suspect will continue no matter what I try.

Although i agree that a tired sheepdog is a well-behaved sheepdog, now that I turned 60, it's an uneven match trying to tire a 2-year old sheepdog on a walk.
Obe does the same. Most of the time he is wanting attention or to go for a walk ( as mentioned tired sheepie is a quiet sheepie). Now there is a time when it's I got to go outside and do my thing. If it's attention and I'm busy here is a toy go play. Usually does not work at first but then after a few minutes of ignoring him he comes, lays down so maybe it does.
