Location of crate

Our main floor crate for Hudson (it is too big to move up and down, so there's a second one upstairs), was in our living room. It faced a picture window (into the backyard where nothing ever happened), but I liked that he had a window to look out of.

When we (finally) completed a renovation on our computer room, my husband tucked it under a small staircase (the stairs are open, so there's air and light, but it faces the side of a desk). He has no view.

I've noticed that he's much better in the crate now. I guess with no distractions he just goes off to sleep, but it's bugging me (yes, I know...it's my issue, not his) that he's got nothing to look at all day. My husband says I should "get over it."

Do you think it makes a difference to him at all? I'm mourning the loss of this beautiful view (and the occasional squirrel running by) for him, but does a dog actually care? When we put him in now he settles really quickly and goes right to sleep. Is it cruel to make him stare at a blank wall when we are gone? (I suspect I'm the only one on the planet who would worry about such a thing, but I just do.) We can't leave any toys he likes in his kennel as he shreds and eats just about everything, and when we put blankets in we find them pressed halfway out under the metal opening. When he's free he immediately pulls them out, so I'm getting the strong message that he doesn't want them there.

But I feel so guilty...no toys, no blankets, and nothing to look at either. I feel like such a cruel doggy mom. (And yes, I'm aware that I am weird.)

I just wanted to say we feel guilty too, and put our dog in the living room for that reason. Mequpak IS calmer when there are no distractions, and MORE irritating to us when his cage is near us b/c he sees us running around, BUT we love to see him as much as we know he loves to see us. For training, I don't know if it's better, but I'm sure it is esp. if you see an improvement, but we like to make things difficult in this house if it means us being happier.
Snowy's crate is in tucked in and with no distractions she goes right to sleep. When she had a view she did not settle down.
I dont crate but I was thinking about a wild dog den. They're usually in a cave kind of place all closed in with no view so the dogs feel safe and out of sight.
I guess you'll have to let him tell you by his behaviour. Otherwise you've got to buy another crate and put it in the window and let him chose. :D
what about hanging a picture or a poster? a nice calming one......see if that makes a difference....(i would feel exactly the same! )
Or one of those posters you have to stare at to see the image in the dots? That'll keep him busy.
Our crates are all tucked in odd places.
Maggie is in the playroom and a covered metal crate. It looks at the fish tank on the open side. :)
Chewie likes the one down at the end of the porch. It is very secluded.
The others look out into the livingroom, but are plastic and covered on all sides except the door.

So, I guess my vote is for the new, quieter location.
Bert's crate is in our bedroom and I want Steve to open the curtains before he goes to work. Steve thinks I am crazy but I think Bert would like to have some natural sunlight while we are at work.

But like you guys it probably has everything to do with me and Bert just goes to sleep and chews on his everlasting treat and sleeps again not knowing the difference.

I also want Steve to put some light music on, that does happen somedays.
It sounds like a more relaxing place now, the occasional squirrel would drive our Rufus nuts, he would be wanting to go outside to find them. It seems Hudson likes a simple life and who can blame him? I reckon the crate is nice and peaceful now, with no distractions and nothing to disturb his personal resting time :D
Baloo's crate (We call it his 'room' & when you say room he will run right to it) has been in a few different locations... When we lived in the other house it was in the living room, in a corner where all sides we covered but one and that looked out into the LR and DR area.

At this house we moved it into our bedroom-- only because it has a nice spot just right for it and the LR here has a fireplace close to the only spot I could fit it, yet I don't want him by the fireplace... He seems to act no different with either spot. I do have a sheet over it that goes across the top and covers one side... (I was trying to give him the "den" feeling  ) but the door is not covered at all. He goes in & settles down in 20 seconds flat. No worries for him. But I do have 2 stuffed toys in there that he has always "fretted over" since we got him. We call these his LOVIES... they stay in his cage at all times and he snuggles them, uses one as a pillow... only time they come out is when we go on long trips. We put them in car with him.

I would say as long as your dog is comfortable and makes no hesitation to go in his room... No Worries.
just make sure he has plenty to do when not crated and he'll be too tired to worry about it:)

If he can have toys in his crate give him a favorite and someting stimulating like a food cube or ICube - I am sure he isn't worried about you being bored in your cubicle all day

No, I'm sure he isn't. But I'd LOVE a day of being bored in my cubicle. I teach grade two...never a dull moment!

Now I'm actually jealous of Hudson being locked in a crate all day. I bet it would be much quieter than in my classroom. (And, for the record, I have a good group.)

Gosh, this comment made me crack up! All I know is that I've always worked in a cubicle. This office is the second one where I actually have a window! It's absolutely fantastic and I love peaking outside.
We have ours in the tv room, right from puppyhood the sheepie has slept through tv noise, kids walking in and out or through the room to the hall, never bothered her.If she is tired she sleeps,if she is awake someone soon lets her out.I think they get used to whatever activity is going on around them.
