Anal Glands

Hi everyone. I just have some quick questions about OES's and their annal glands. I have a 6 month old OES and I don't know the correct term but the other day I had to excrete the juices from his annal glands. He was leaking everytime he laid down and I had enough. A lot of liquid came out and it really smelled:S. I was wondering if anyone else does this themselves at home and if they have any tips and also if OES's generally have problems with their annal glands?
Thanks for your tips and advice!:)

Edgar has anal grand issues. lisaoes suggested trying a teaspoon of Metamucil everyday in his food and Mad Dog suggested upping his exercise every day. So far it has helped some.

I don't express them myself though.... I let the vet do it.
I have done it at College when I had teaching as Dog Groomer and it's not the nicest things to do. It certainly smells!! That was the only time it did it on Charlie, I think she doesnt need it so much, luckily! I would know when she needs it,its when she starts rubbing her bum (Anal) on the floor! uaaah!!
I'd make an appointment with one of your vet's vet techs. They can show you the proper way to express anal glands... they often do it internally.

I have to express one dog's glands about every 4 weeks... she has one that simply won't express on it's own. I use a glove (I use latex-free ones), ky jelly and some tissue... it's often best to do it while the dog is in or at least near the tub because a fanny wash is almost always needed.

I had a hard time with the gland slipping around  I finally figured out that you can anchor the thing between your thumb and middle finger on the outside while you express internally with your index finger! Probably way more information than you really wanted.
I recently started feeding my dog a whole banana every day with a little peanut butter. Her stool has firmed up better with that than anything I have ever done. I tried the pumpkin for the fiber, but that did not work.

Also, in the grooming section I asked where to buy malacetic wipes (dry shampoo in a wipe). After my puppy had her anal glands extracted, the vet tech used those instead of a bath and her rear end looked like perfection, cleaner than when she was brought in. My vet office sells them, so yours may too, but you could try to order them online, although I have not found them on a website I trust. The wipes also have directions on how to do the anal glands at home.

I thought AMazon had them - even if its a second seller through amazon I would definitley trust them - any site with secrity is basically safe to use and even safer if you use a credit card.
Thanks for all the advice everyone! I will definately call the vet to set up an appointment to learn how to express the glands myself. And I will also look into those wipes. Thanks again!
EntirelyPets.com has these wipes too-

There is also a great spray that neutralizes anal gland odor- A.O.E.
