The best brush/comb

we are having trouble with finding the 'right' brush/comb for our 18 month oes.

we have spent a small fortune on different things that are on the market, trying to find something that will do some good to her coat, and to stop matts.
some of the things we have tried include:
the rake http://www.petsathome.com/Assets/PetsAtHome/products/1/8/7/18747_l.jpg
and also the rake with spring in the teeth that also turn - this is good for getting matts ect out, but just seems to cause them.
she hates the rakes. she runs off when they come out. she bites them when we try to use them.

another on we use is a pinhead massage brush thing like this

she doesn't seem to mind this, but not sure if it will do the job long term. only had it a week.

another is a slicker wire thing. good for getting matts out, but doesn't stop them. she isn't too fond of this either

mikki 8 blade matt master http://www.feedem.co.uk/dog-2/dog-grooming-218/mikki-dog-brushes-combs-226/mikki-8-blade-matt-5401.htm
not much use

any suggestions?

I suspect a coat change and there is no stopping the mats, the only thing at her age is to brush daily and then even sometimes you will run into mats. you can shave them down and start over again. I wouldn't use a matt breaker or rake on an OES for routine matt issues, I have used them on other dogs and just don't see the same utility. she is probably running when she sees it because brushing with it is uncomfortable for her - of course eon of mine does have to be cajoled into being brushed at anytime as she really doesn't like being still that long.

If you aren't worried about undercoat, stripping it (and for that I use a matt rake and/or comb) is a good option as it is really the undercoat that matts.

I can't find a link to our undercoat rake but it has two rows - fairley well spaced rows, of longish teeth and is not the comfort grip one.

I would also suggest you get a longer pin or slicker brush - I have the one you linked to and I can't use it on the sheepies.
It will go a LOT better if you get a pin brush without the little balls on the ends of the pins. They will just catch and rip hair out. Very painful.

Depending on where you live, you may have to buy one through mail order for a pin brush without balls. (I do - none available locally; millions of them with little balls on the ends though!)

Popular brands are Hindes, #1 All Systems or Chris Christensen.
Like the others have said, nothing will stop the mats but you can control them from forming by daily grooming with good tools.

Are you regularly line grooming? That's really the best way to brush the whole dog and to make sure you're not missing anything on the dog. It also helps you to go over the dog for any other body abnormalities, too.
Another reasonably priced pin brush without balls on the tips is Scalpmaster.
I have a 19 month old in the middle of coat transition, so I feel your pain. I have all the tools, but he still gets little felt bits. I brush some of him every day. You will get these little mats at this stage. My only advise is go over him/her every day and try to relax and enjoy the time.

I know I must be sick but I really don't mind it for the most part...now, if I only had a grooming table.

Me too!! So we're both sick together. If only I get Tiggy to enjoy it too.  When researching sheepie's before I got Tiggy. I read all this info about grooming being a relaxing, bonding time for owner and dog. Well I'm still waiting

I must admit she is getting better as she gets older and she is only 11 months old so I still have hope. :D
Jenny doesn't seem to mind be brushed too much. Although sometimes I feel like I am wrestling a bear to try to get her to roll on her back to brush the tummy (she is only 6 months old). I have an arsenol of brushes, etc., but I find that what I use most is the rake, pinhead brush and a comb. The rake seems to go through nicely and makes it easy to follow up with the brush. Comb I use on the face ears and bangs. No matter how often I groom her I always seem to find one of those tiny mats, mostly behind the ears. Fortunately, because of keeping up on her, I haven't had a problem with getting them out. She is even good when I am doing that. The only place she doesn't like me to groom is her face, I always have to have a couple treats in hand before I attempt that.
I use an old hair pick I have for nightly checks. I used a matt splitter when I was a newbie and not good at grooming. I now realize that the best prevention is the best with whatever brush. I even have an old hair brush, her favorite, she carries it to me.
