Looking to adopt or rescue sheepdog

Hello,

I live in the Chicago area and wanted to adopt/rescue a sheepdog. If someone has information, please let me know. Hoping for a younger dog for a lasting relationship. Thanks so much.

You can start your search here on the forum. Check out the OES Rescue Contact List for volunteers in your area and surrounding areas. http://www.oes.org/html/oes_rescue.shtml Petfinder.com www.petfinder.com/ is a good resource for dogs that are being placed through rescue groups or shelters. If you have any question about a particular person or group, just ask the members here.

As with buying a puppy, it often takes some patience when working with rescue to find just the right dog. Most rescues do home visits and background checks on the adopting family. Some people think it's more difficult to adopt a rescued dog than to adopt a human child. :-) Expect adoption fees to cover the cost of spay/neuter, vaccinations and grooming.

The OES Rescues in our area do a lot of networking. The OES world is rather small and we all seem to know each other by reputation, if not personally. Just let the rescue you work with know if you are working with multiple organizations so double-work will be avoided. We often share our applications with other rescues that have dogs and vice versa. It's a win-win situation for everyone since people that are made to wait too long tend to buy a puppy from questionable sources.

If you decide to buy a puppy, please visit the Old English Sheepdog Club of America's Breeder Referral List http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamer ... ectory.htm There's also great info on the breed on the OESCA site, too.

Good luck in your search and welcome to the forum!

All great information. I too, am waiting to rescue/adopt an OES, and thanks to this forum, I will probably be doing so in the next few weeks. I am working with the Tarheel group in NC. However, I also emailed the closest breeders from the list above for retired or older dogs available. They were very helpful. Just another tip. Good luck in your search.
Wondering what your situation is, we currently have a 1 1/2 - 2 year old OES whom we can no longer keep - looking for a great home for him. If you are still looking please post contact information. We are also in chicago area.

if you have already contacted your breeder and they don't offer you any help perhaps you should post this dog is available in its own thread?
