Booo, soy is in everything!!

So, I'm on a 2-week diet that I'm eliminating several foods completely from my diet during that time (I got food allergy tested and so I'm eliminating the foods which I had a reaction to). Well, soy is one of them and it's in EVERYTHING. Of course things like tofu and edamame and soy sauce, but it's in ice cream, and potato chips, and canned soup, and most prepared salad dressings...AND, it's not always labeled as 'soy' but things like lecithin... AND, not all products that contain soy have that warning on them that says Contains Soy.

This is gonna be a long 2 weeks...

Yep - leave it to Americans. Someone thought soy was shy the Japanese etc were healthier (read thinner) and thought well if a little is good, a lot is better!!! no wonder we have so many issues - and now they think soy causes blood sugar issues :D
That's too bad. I'll try eating more of it for you.

*kisses*
Thanks, Jo, I appreciate your thoughtfulness!

Oh, and the other foods I must avoid during this 2 weeks are:
almonds
cashews
peanuts
walnuts

Malt (what the heck is malt in?)
salmon
mustard
mushrooms
soy
broccoli
cabbage
carrots
tomato
white potato...
My mom would HATE that considering that's all she eats ...throw in rice, and she'd be anorexic. Does your daughter have any that you know of ...and where are Christmas pics? She must look totally different now since we rarely get pics!
Bummer! My sis is supposed to limit her soy intake due to the type of breast cancer she had two years ago, so we share your pain. I had to give up wheat for a month......just as much fun as soy! 8)

Oh, and malt is in.......malted milk balls???????

hey so do i.....limit soy due to b.c. ..i just didnt realize that it was in so much stuff!
So what in the world are humans suppose to eat. Seriously, you cant eat this b/c it can lead to this, that product causes that. I can understand a diet for health or weight reasons that makes sense. It just seems like everything we eat is bad for us. I'm all for eating healthy, buying organic etc. but really what is good for me to eat that wont cause some problem?

You can have tomato's as IMOP they should be considered poison. I HATE THEM. I would starve before eating one. Trust me, my grandfather, along with others have tried, and I won every time.
I do believe Malt is a sweetmer and may be in many foods

I HATE THEM TOO! :P

Sorry Steph about your "diet" or lack thereof.
Sounds like my restricted diet(if it tastes good,I know I cant eat it)
.Malt is in biscuits, bread, cereals,Milo, milk flavorings, instant puddings, some breadmixes, candy, some flavoured coffee and coffee substitute, flavored milk type drinks. Its most often in things with wheat or other grains.
This does not sound like fun. How are you supposed to know what not to eat if it isn't labeled? :?

So, basically, you can eat chicken, brown rice and lettuce. 8)

Exactly! That's all I can think of when I think of malt...I guess I'll have to switch to wine then during this experiment!

I went to the salad bar today and kept having to put the tongs down...nope, no mixed greens because they had carrots in them. No this, no that!

I think I would find having to avoid wheat almost easier because at least now they have gluten-free sections at the grocery store.

So I bought some olive tapenade last night to substitute for my salsa addiction and went to grab the crackers...they have malt AND soy in them :( And flavored oatmeal has soy in it, so I'm eating plain oatmeal.

At least this is just an experiment, more or less, so I can go back to my old ways if I want to.

And Shon, I agree! It seems everything is bad for you. That's why I'm a moderation girl. I just try to avoid the REALLY bad things, and then just eat everything else in moderation.

Jo...I'll try and get some pics up. I have a cute one of her in her hospital gown...
Well, one week down. It's getting easier, I guess, since I know instinctively which foods will have the banned ingredients overall. But still not fun. Unless I feel 100% different in a week, I think I'll be chalking this up to a nice experiment but not a lasting change.
Update:

So, I made it all 2 weeks, and I'm sad to say I think I actually felt better after the 2 weeks were up. So that implies that one (or more) of those foods I eliminated doesn't agree with me. But which one(s)? I'm betting on it being soy, which is annoying.

So now that I've eliminated for 2 weeks I can start slowly saturating my diet one-by-one with the eliminated foods and see the effect. I added tomato back on Monday b/c life w/o tomatoes is hard! I think tomato and soy were the hardest to avoid. Today I started back with broccoli.
I'm not sure I'd be putting back a forbidden food every day. It may take several days for a reaction. How about no more than 1 or 2 forbiddens per week?

You really were restricted, no nuts, no "cabbage family", no solanacea family:peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, potato; no fermented (malt)......yea gads! Beef and banana diet..., chicken and zucchini...lovely.
The doctor said I could reintroduce a food every 3 days, so that's what I've been doing.

And it WAS restricting. It was really hard to find things to eat in those 2 weeks. Although I did eat peppers. And beer. Oops, I guess I don't care if malt makes me feel bad!
Update:

WANTING TO CAVE! I'm getting bored of this experiment. So far I've added back tomatoes, brocolli and carrots. So far I feel fine. I have a bag of Ghiradelli chocolates with the mint filling in my desk that I WANT. NOW. But according to my reintroduction plan, I'm doing soy last, and the chocolates have soy lecithin.

I've lost like 3 pounds b/c I'm just bored of food and there's nothing that I can/want to eat :( I can't really afford to lose much more weight or I'll start to look unhealthy :?
