sheepie names...why????

Why did you name your dog the name you named her(him...?????

I'll start....

Pearl...Dino (DH) named her..he looked at her with her big white Pearl head and said to me,"Her name is Pearl...(I wanted to name her Jordan)

Cosmo....MY favorite drink!!!!

Heart...my breeder named her because she has a Heart shaped white splotch in the middle of her black on her rump...I loved it..so I kept it!! AND she is my "Heart"!!!!

SamSun because he was such a large puppy it made me think of Sampson and Goliath. One of my favorite nicknames is Sunshine, so I put the two together. SamSun! :)
Baloo....

because he reminded hubby of Baloo the Bear on Disney's Jungle Book when walks.

Unfortunately, no "special" or "creative" reason...I just loved the name Charlie and it fit! My girls call him CharChar (makes my husband crazy). I call him Chuck E. Cheese sometimes (makes my girls crazy). Charlie totally fits him though.
Her registered name is Fuzzibutts Duchess of Earl and I couldn't think of a call name that seemed to suit her so she gets Dutch
sorry double post
Gee - I've rarely been able to name mine.

Let's see,
Belle - breeder named her - it's a reflection of her registered name, Masquerade Mirabella

Maddie - breeder named her. I wanted to register her Masquerade Mad About You (because I was and am, call name Jaime) But breeder had a theme going based on the sire's registered name so changed it to Masquerade Mad Money, call name Maddie. Which I rarely if ever use, in protest, I guess

Liz - breeder named her, she likes to name the dogs she keeps for herself after fashion designers. Her registered name is Masquerade Moccasin. For years I thought that was because she used to chew on her breeder's shoes, but a couple of years ago she informed me the litter (of two  ) had a "western" theme. Why I do not know.
And she still owns her - she's just a permanent "guest" here

Macy - co-breeder named her - I forget what I wanted to name her, but I insisted the entire litter have Madness in their registered names, so she named her Masquerade Midnight Madness, call name Macy. OK, whatever

Che - new owners named him, wife is hispanic, and I couldn't bring myself to rename him when I took him back. I did warn them that naming a puppy after a south american revolutionary, probably not a good thing... Maybe they've learned their lesson and name any future dog they get Perfect, which is what they wanted. (Actually, they wanted Belle - not!! And, yes, we are still friends  ) I now (formally) "co-own" him with my Dad who wants to rename him "Igor" - not!

Sybil - one of Belle's co-owners named her (!!) Well, I announced that her registered name would be Masquerade Must Be Madness (which pretty much sums up everyone's thoughts on my keeping her to begin with   ) She suggested the name and I immediately approved it because it was so...her. As close as I've ever come to naming a dog, I guess

Our first sheepie was BRANDON. It was actually after a soap opera character, but there's a city in our province named Brandon, and everyone assumed that was why.

We picked Portage after another city/town in Manitoba (Portage la Prairie). It was inkeeping with the city/town thing, and was a tribute to our BRANDON.

In jest, I had said that it should be Portage and The Pas (pronounced The Paw) as The Pas is another place in Manitoba. My husband immediately groaned and said that now that we'd named a second we'd have to get a second. (I was delighted and we ended up with littermates.) We decided that we needed a pattern for middle names, and so we picked scientists. (We are big science geeks.) Portage is Portage Pavlov, and ThePas (which ended up being pronounced to rhyme with weekus) was ThePas Darwin.

The running joke was that our next dog would be Plumas (after a small town in MB that my hubby has relatives in), and we also toyed with Churchill as well. But Churchill is a tad overdone around here, and so we passed on that. Emerson was in the running, and may come up later as well. Who knows?

We were at the museum and saw some information on the Hudson's Bay company. That was it. Hudson it was. Technically Hudson is not a town/city, but there's a bay, island, and I believe a smallish lake as well, so it keeps the pattern. We now have Hudson Galileo. (Often referred to as Smudge for short.)
Let's see.....Vogt's Duchess of Carmont (Duchess) boys named her after our street
Pooh-Bear's Unchained Melody (Melody) named after a favorite song.
Ken-Bear's Duke of Earl (Isaac) named after a favorite song
Ken-Bear's Call Th'Wind Mariah (Mariah) named after a favorite song
Ken-Bear's Tequila Sunrise (José) kids named him. Obviously I shouldn't let my kids name dogs!
Hubby says if there is another one it will be called: In the Still of the Night!
Our first sheepie was "Monty" as his pedigree name contained as part of it "Sir Montague"

Peppa was because she was a bouncy baby and full of Pep.

Kelsey was because her father was "Ned Kelly" and I just like Kelsey. Even though the boys wanted to call her "Salt" 8O So we could have a Salt and Peppa

Brie because frenchy names from that kennel, and she was all creamy and gooey and sweet like the oozy cheese, she originally was charlotte but completely ignored that name so a name change was in order when she flew into Australia. :D

Syd became Syd (who ever thought we would keep a dog invading the land of sheepie girls) because after the litter was born, my Hubbys Uncle passed away and as he was a stocky bloke and in memory of him, my hubby named his blue eyed boy after his beloved uncle.

From the same litter Babette, (only ever planned to keep a female, but must admit Syd has stolen mommys heart, way so sweet) liked the name and always planned to have the next female in the house called that as loved the french movie "Babettes Feast" We call her babs for short and it really suits our bouncy full on sweetie. :D
einstein is called einy because thats what hubby wanted to name him

"i want a big fluffy dog called einstein like in back to the future"

he still toying with names for our next one ( which will be a couple of years away)

hes got it down to edison and faraday - hubbys into physics can you tell !!!!

zoe and einy
Chewie - short for Chewbacca
Family full of sci-fi fans (not me though), but it does suit him well. And dad is Shaggy Bear's Skywalker with the call name Luke. :D

Like his sibs, he had to have Masquerade and Madness in the registerd name. Our farm is Alice Acres, after the lake behind our house. So Chewie ended up Masquerade Alice Acres Madness with the call name Chewie. :D
Now there is a good question:

Welli: was named after a dog in a cartoon.

Capt'n: was named by his breeder.

Dash: was actually called Dasher by his breeder I shortened it to Dash.

Hamish: because we wanted somthing Scottish.

Misty: because we could never see through her.

Zorro: was called Gismo when he came to us but due to the state he was in I wanted to rename him sorrow, hence Zorro.
i named all my oes d'd
daytona got her in daytona
dolly she was such a doll
derby for rescuing him in ky for the derby
duffy cause he looks like a duffy
dreamer--- big mistake he is no dreamer
I love Chewie's name and suggested it when we were looking at names.

Cosmo....MY favorite drink!!!!

With one of our cats, I almost did an alcoholic drink, but my husband said "that doesn't make sense b/c you don't even drink." :? I was in college though, and that's what all my friends were suggesting. So we ended up with Chloe and not Amaretto or Appletini.

We named our newest Mequss'uk or for short Mequpak because we just came from Alaska ...and it meant Shaggy dog which was perfect. On top of the fact that it had to match the rest of our animal names which are strange. We also like to give our family members a headache. :)
Violet came from a rescue and already had her name, Vilet. Violet has wall eyed (blue/brown) so I thought the name fit her. I did changed her name to add an "O". While I was adding the "O" I thought she needed a middle name, so I picked Jewel after my granddaughter Jenah Jewel. So Violet Jewel she is. :D

The Aussies:

China's breeder named her "pale face" since she was an Aussie with an all white face and blue eyes. When I adopted her I changed her name to China Aqua...China because her face reminded me of fine China. Aqua because of the color of blue of her eyes. China is a blue merle Aussie.

Asia is my most resent adoption/rescue. Her previous owner had named her Sparkles. Asia is a beautiful Black faced Tri Aussie. Her hair is such beautiful straight black hair and her eyes are beautiful chocolate brown that the name Asia is the only one that kept surfacing. Her name Asia fits her perfectly. Asia's middle name is Jade...so Asia Jade.

The cat.
Pearl is my soon to be 14yr old cat and is all pearly white with beautiful green eyes. We also had her litter mate who died in an accident and her name was Onyx. Onyx was a beautiful black kitten.

Hopefully in the near future I would like to adopt a male OES and I have his name already picked out "Mickey Finn." :D
two boys were named by the breeder and the two rescues we were told they were named by the 'nasty' original purchasers.
:D I named my first oes after "godess of the dawn"
(don't know shat you call her)
and the nothern light,
because I got the feeling,
that she woulg become the light in my life. :hearts:
http://www.hickerphoto.com/northern-lig ... es-cat.htm
You clever people.

Glacier came with her name.

MO is really Simone and came with her name.

Olivia and Splash came with their names as did Paige and Sam.

Harry was named by a little girl at the shelter. Her mother decided not to take the dog since it wasn't a pure OES but the daughter was disappointed. So I let her name the dog.

Jack bounced around like a Jack in the box.

Other dogs were more creatively named:

Stella, Shane and Abbott were named for movie exclamations; "Come back Shane," "Hey Aabbooootttt," and of course, "Steelllllla."

Crumpet and Maudie for obvious English conotations.

Basil the St. B for the Swiss town..........etc. nothing really creative.
Nigel...because of the XTC song "Making plans for Nigel". His registered name is "Blueshire's plans for Nigel". We couldn't fit the whole name in. My last boy was Winston but I still wanted a British name.

Bella came from Carmella whose registered name is "Gwynedd's Ba Da Bing" Her call name is Carmella, but it got shortened to Bella by the time I got her.
Ellie!!! because I loved to watch Dallas.... (the tv program.) and my mum called her Miss Ellie... lol

Amie!! because she was a cute tiny puppy when i went to see her! and she looked a little amie!! :)

Maizie!!! I loved the name!!!.. I had three names Maizie.. daisy... or Tilly!!! ? But when i saw her Maizie was so her!!!!

And Hattie!!! she was called Hattie when we went to see her as she was 18 months old... steve didn't like her name!!! He wanted Charlie But the more i looked at her she really fitted her name!!! Little Hattie!!! she gets called hatt's... scatty... hattie scatty!! Im so glad I didn't changed it!!! and its different! too. We had a actress her called Hattie Jakes.. so I guess it a bristish name lol lol :)
We had named Cinderella (Cinde) because she came from rags to riches being a rescue.
And Snow White because she is almost all white. (Snowy)

Flannigan because He was red and he looked Irish LOL. It fit him perfect.
old english wrote:

I really like the name Ellie :)
Mony is nickname for Samoen, which is the combination of our two male dogs who passed, Sam and Moe. Laci, because it was a name we could all agree on, husband wanted Casey, Daughter wanted Lily so Laci. Mini Schnauzer named after cartoon Inchhigh Private Eye, so Inchhigh is his name.
I started a naming tradition for my boy's with the first sheepie. He came from a terrible BYB. While in my lap on the way home, I realized he wasn't going to be the brightest bulb in the pack, so he would need a strong name. My first boy became Malcolm Elliott Forbes and tradition was born. Each boy after that was named for a great man.

My next boy came to us named Buddy, euwww. Unlike the first, he was a very smart young man. The kids and I spent a week trying to find a name that fit. My youngest loved watching reruns of Green Acres and one day walked into the house yelling "Oliver" just like Eva Gabor on the show. Buddy's ears shot up and his nub started dancing. From that point he became Oliver Wendell Holmes.

Miss Ellie was named by the breeder and it fit.

Buffett came to us as Bubba, euwww. He really needed a strong name, so he became Warren Buffett. In reality, he's much more Jimmy than Warren. :?

Margie came to us as Marley. Hubby didn't think Marley fit. After being in the house for about a month, she became "Our little Margie". Truth be known, I named her after Margie in Fargo, same personality.
:D Willoughby got his name from one of Jane Austin's characters in Sense and Sensibility. When I looked at his family tree, I discovered that his grandsire was also named Willoughby, so it sort of runs in his family! 8)

Edwina is a Maine Coon and a rescue: she chose me! I named her Edwina because she's a lady.

Percival, I'm convinced chose his own name and sent it to me by telepathy. He's his own cat at all times.
Bert came to us as "Paulie."
We thought Paulie was cute but we wanted a mature name for when he grew up. After lots of thought....and wondering if he knew his former name we went with Bert. He adjusted just fine, and the name suits him.
one blue eye=Obe. registered name Sir Obe Bear. Once knighted by queen of england you become Sir. Bear came from him looking/walking like a little bear cub. I will sometimes call him buba, what up buba?, Tara calls him her boo boo.
I know I've explained Bear and Clyde's before but Owen got his call name early on. I had been trying to think of all these names and James just blurted out, "How about something that goes with Clyde? Like Owen?" (Clyde was going to be Clive but in the end, Clyde was more appropriate.) We both like Clive Owen the actor and the name ended up sticking.

Owen's registered name is Ken-Bear's Master of His Owen Domain. If you're a Seinfeld fan, you'll recognize it. :)
:D Ah ha! I forgot to say that Willoughby's registered name is Sir Willoughby [Price] of Sentinel. 8)
We live in Tammany Manor with a significant civil war history. I also wanted a pompous olde English name. Hense, Sir Chauncey of Tammany Manor. AKA: Chaunce or Chauncey
Einstein's full name was Lord Einstein Blues

Einstein b/c he looked like the scientist with his wild hair

Blues b/c he had two beautiful blue eyes and I lived in Kansas City, MO - KCMO - when I got him - home of the blues
My first OES was Toby, actually Toby the Tigger since I had a 2 year old, and we were heavily into reading Pooh. He was as bouncy as Tigger.

My second was The Lady Bluebonnet. We called her Bonnie.

I got Toby and Bonnie as puppies. Abracadabra came to me as a 2 year old. I had been missing my Bonnie and noticed an ad in the paper for her. They had named her Ebony, and I knew I wanted to change it. After having her home for a few days, we noticed she could do magic......She made the cats disappear, she made the trash disappear, and she even made herself disappear when she discovered there were deer to chase. We call her Abbey most of the time.

Dulce del Negro is the sweetest black dog ever, and Maggie because my son named her.

The cats are Carlotta, found as a kitten in car lot A when leaving work, and Luna,a kitten who showed up during a full moon.
My Hubby named George. He said he wanted an old English name, and he came up with George.

Originally he wanted to call him Eric but I said NO to that one.

If there is ever another one he will be called Henry
Rufus is named after the character from the Bill & Ted films. Since the film came out I knew I would call my sheepie that, had to wait a few years to get him though!

His full name is Macopa Hint of Mischief ...I keep telling him it's just a hint
I alway loved the name Winston - - - when I saw him as a pup - I knew my sheepie's his name had to be that. One interesting thing about his name is that you can tell a little about a person by what they associate Winston's name with:

Winston Fly Rods - - anyone who flyfishes or lives in Montana

Winston cigarettes - - - I get this from some of the folks in the south

Winston Churchill - - - my literary friends

Harry Winston jewelry ---- anyone that knows me 8O

PS - Winston's registered name is Sir Winston Blue Jones
well pandas full name is pandemonium.....because as a puppy thats what she created.....

if we ever get another one, its name will be havoc!
Pirate became Pirate because his reg named is Captain Whitehead Duval, and we decided he was a roque Captain.

Keira...well for Keira Knightly to go with the Pirate!

Lizzie...Hmmm... her name was Molly when we got her, but we had lost a Molly and it didn't feel right. So I named her after the Queen of England. Although she now has many names, Pillow, Wizzie, Lizbo, and Wiggles.
All our 3 Sheepies we had/have where resque Sheepies!

Our 1. Sheepie 8 years ago was called BLUE cause he had blue eyes!
Then we got ELLIE, that was her name and we didnt wanted to change it and last not least we got CHARLIE, we thought first to rename her as we found Charlie would be a boys name only but we where told her real name is CHARLOTTE and the shortcut for it would be CHARLIE so we left it but if I ever will have a Puppy (still on my list as I never had one!) I want to call her SUGAR as Sheepies are sweet as sugar!!!    :hearts:  :aww:
I forgot Fox! Sorry guy. Name came because of an especially narrow muzzle, a fox-like face.

Also Chad the beardie. He came to us right after the hanging chad problem in Florida 8 years ago.

Lady because she was so tiny, deaf, nearly blind but conducted herself with great dignity.

Clancy the Irish Wolfhound, no explanation necessary.

And Sonya........husband named her as it was before my time. She was actually Sonya II since the first died as a pup, as did all the pups in that litter. Something was wrong.

Oh yeah, Sonya's pup was Little Bit. He was identical to his mother in markings.
Up until Sammie, we had never named our dogs. All of them - Buford, Farley, and Dresdan (Drezzie) - came with their names. We liked them enough, so we kept them. We didn't like the name Sammie came with, so we changed it. Her "proper" name is Samantha Dresdan, or Sammie D, or just plain Sammie or Sam. Always wanted a sheepdog named Sam, like the one in the Looney Tunes cartoons.
Drezzie's Mom wrote:

I totally :hearts: Sam in cartoons!!!!!
Drezzie's Mom wrote:

Hahaha! We had to look up the Looney Tunes cartoons of Sam, the sheepdog to show our kids. Charlie looks just like him when he puts his butt on the deck and his front paws down one step and surveys the yard. It's hilarious!!!!!!
Our first dog was Sir Frederick Stanley, and I always wanted another sheepdog to be named Stanley Frederick in his honor. Well, Dublin was born in a litter of 7 girls, 1 boy - and the boy was taken. I wanted her to have an Irish name, and wanted to name her after a city in Ireland. Initially, it was going to be Blarney, but I just couldn't go along with that.

So, her full name is Barkshire's Wild Dublin Rose -- shortened to Dublin Mae.
Oh my..........
well I will add to Wendy's about Carmella........ Baa Daa Bing came from the Soprano's as I met the whole cast with her dad when we were going to Switzerland to show...

Duncan is Gwynedd's Dunk' N Disorderly..... his other breeder was in the hotel room eating starburst and he was being SO disorderly so that was his name.

Delilah picked her name. ToJo;s Funtastic for Ewe........ Her litter theme was Fun........ was going to name her Sarah but just didn't 'fit'..... was driving down the road and Tom Jones came on singing Delilah and she started bouncing and barking like you wouldn't believe!

Calypso is Gwynedd's I B'lieze in Ewe........ Ewe comes from Dee's name. I liked Calypso from John Denver's song...... from Diving and Cousteau as we had been in Belize diving at the Blue Hole...... but there is some of Calypso from Pirates of the Carribean in her too! lol.

Checker's is GWYNEDD EWE GOTTA B'LIZE IN SOMETHING because i (again was in Belize when the Breeding took place) but It is also a play on BELIVE because i believed in this breeding......... and Checkers because he has a checkerboard marking on his back........
Casey because it's phonetically "K" and "C".

I used to tease my husband that we could name our future child Casey since my name starts with K and his starts with C and then it would be one part of each of us....but then the child's full name would have been Casey Gracie  So we used it for our sheepie instead...anytime I call the vet's, they'll ask me the name of my dog and I'll say "Casey" and they without fault remember who we are and say: " Oh! It's Casey Gracie!" I think our 70 pound excitable doggy may have made an impression on the staff last time he dragged us around the waiting area.
So I will tell you too:Affair=she is my Rescue dog and this is the name her breeder gave her because she is very charming.
Alika:this name is coming from Africa and it means:girl wich is looking beautiful
Across my Heart:this is my big boy,I am his breeder.I gave him this name because he had some problems when he was just born.He did not breath and his heart was not in action. So I reanimated him and it works!he is my very special dog,he walked just right Across my heart.
Susanne
I picked Shamu's name because I love the killer whales at sea world.
My stepson named Echo.
Tonks and Luna are names for the corresponding Harry Potter characters. We thought the personalities were a good fit!
My black Lab Black Jack just looked like a jack and he is black

My GSD Bailey for Baileys Irish Creme

Guinness for the beer

Molly came as molly

Gracie my lab hound from Ga was named amazing grace because I got her out of GA in less than a week and that is amazing..

they all live on CrazyAcres... our farm was named that for obivous reasons
Kismet because it means Fate,Destiny,Fortune, she was meant to be my dog.The name was suggested by a member here and I am so grateful,I had some potential names on a list but that meant none were "right".Her 2nd name is Bliss Bebe (Blue Eye Brown Eye)
I have loved and collected miniature teddy bears all of my life. I was never a big fan of the Muppets but of course I loved Fozzie Bear who was also a clown! So, it was a no brainer when we were to get a male sheepie that he be named after some bear. We toyed around with Teddy, Smokey, and Fozzie. I think Fozzie was voted as most popular on this forum. It is the most perfect name for my little clown! His nickname is George when he's being particularly like the curious monkey:D

Annie had already been called by her name for 6 years and responds to it before she came to live with us. We felt it only appropriate to keep it. The only other fitting name would be "Queenie" or "Queen B".
Bally is short for Balius which is the name of a horse in one of my favourite mythological stories. Balius was one of Achilles horses and he wept on the battlefield when one of Achilles friends was slain. There's a lot more to it than that though  too lazy to write it out.

Oh, and by pure luck I found out the other week that the word 'bal' means 'hair' in hindi (my fiance is Indian)... so his name really means hairy
