We just reserved our first OES puppy

We are very excited, and we can't wait to have him here in a couple of weeks. He's 7 weeks old and just beautiful. We've been seriously looking for a OES puppy for weeks, somewhat looking for one for a few months. I used to be a pet groomer, so I know they are high maintenance when it comes to caring for their coats, but what else can you tell me about them? I know they're intelligent, need exercise (we have 1 acre fenced in so this shouldn't be a problem), and they're loyal dogs. We have two children - 3.5 yr old and 2 yr old sons. I'm told they are good family dogs. I hope so. Would you recommend microchipping? They told us that was an option if we want to do it. I think we will. My husband talked to them, and he said he felt he was being interviewed as a potential owner along with interviewing them about their dogs, so that left a good impression on him. Anyway, I'm just curious about the breed itself. Here's the puppy we just reserved:

What a cutie!!
I would definitely have the puppy microchipped. If the dog accidentally gets out and loses it's ID tags all shelters can identify the dog by microchip. You wouldn't want to lose your beloved dog. It is cheap too.
OES's love being around their familys.... Sometimes they are known as Velcro Dogs... As we speak my 11 mos old OES is at my feet....and always underfoot when I am walking. Very Very loving affectionate dogs, but like any dog they will test their boundaries to see what they can and can't get away with. Most of the time they are very easy to train as they love pleasing their masters. Just keep an I on your little ones. Pepsi has a tendancy to run into my son when he is playing with my other dog.
Also OES's are known for having senstive tummys. Mine is on a Lamb and Rice food and doing well.
Good Luck with your Puppy!

Welcome to the forum! You've found the perfect place for all sorts of useful information. Is your puppy a male or female? Absolutely adorable!!

I would be careful of the pup around your sons for awhile. Positive reinforcement training for the pup is absolutely necessary. And please train your sons on how to behave around the puppy as well. I'm sure they will all grow to be great friends, but it will be a work in progress for a time. Since your sons are so young, the puppy may view them as peers, may try to assert himself as the alpha above them.

Good luck! And remember that this forum is here for all issues you may encounter.

What an adorable puppy! I love the markings.... welcome to the forum, and thanks for the pics! :)
Anything in particular you want to know about them as a breed can be found by using the search tool at the top of the forum.... there are plenty of topics to choose from, but perhaps just taking a look in our antics section will give you an idea about these furry clowns :)
Hi,

Oh he's adorable!

The only concern I would have, and this is also stated on the AKC OES website as since they are herding dogs ...that what they do...herd. One one hand it's really cute watching them not allow a 2 year old to step out of their yard and herd them back over to mom. On the other hand, these big clowns sometimes don't realize how big they are and a hip check can send a 2 year old flying.

Just remember what's cute at 15 pounds will not be cute at 100 pounds..that's the best advice I'd give new owners. If you always keep that in mind..it will make all your training easier!

Good luck!
In that first pic, he looks so much like snoopy. The big black nose, the black ears and white head! Very cute!
What strong characteristics your new puppy has. I LOVE IT!!!

Congrats on your puppy. :D

don't leave now that you found the board. we want to hear all about his growth!!! :)
Thanks everyone. Jasper will be here on Saturday! I can't wait to go to the airport to pick him up. I'm afraid the first stop will be for a bath though, because he'll have a 10 hour flight and then a 2 hour drive to our home.

Chris - Jasper is a boy. :)

I think our kids will be okay. My parents have a great dane, and the kids do great with him and his whapping tail. :) We also live in a rural area, so they've been raised around animals from dogs to cats to chickens, rabbits, goats, pigs, cows, horses...lol They have PLENTY of animal experience, help feed & take care of them, so they are pretty responsible for their ages. Of course, there are times they act like 2 & 3 year olds too - lol. Im more worried about our cat than the kids though - lol.

We went shopping for him today, and we had way too much fun. Whew...he's not even here yet and already spoiled rotten! lol Just two more days....
Jasper is soooooooooooooooooooo cute

Enjoy him and get ready to lose your heart to him.

Deborah

Jasper is a cutie! Thanks for the newest picture. I am sure you are going out of your mind waiting for his arrival.

Good Luck,
Kristen
Gail,
Jasper's just gorgeous!!! Does he have one blue and one brown eye, or two blue eyes? The blue eye in his last picture is just beautiful!

I'm sure Jasper will do great with your sons, since they're used to all kinds of animals already. And what could be better than an OES in the country with all sorts of farm animals? Sounds like a match made in heaven!

There is no such thing as too many pictures. We are picture addicts, always craving more, more, more!

Looking forward to hearing and seeing more of Jasper! 8)

Chris
I'm addicted to this site now...keep reading all the old posts :) I've been browsing the pictures, and ALL pf tje dpgs (and cats & rabbits :) ) here are gorgeous!!!

Chris - Jasper is wall-eyed...one blue, one brown. His blue eye is the same color as my oldest son's eyes, so I couldn't resist. That won my heart over. :)
I am so jealous. I have two OES's and can't say enough about them. Having them grow up in my hectic household was the best thing. I have 5 children - they are all in their teens now and Son that had a Heart Condition passed away 4 1/2 years ago at the age of 13 - why I write this is because these dogs and their Yorkie were the best FRIENDS he could ask for - especially when he needed something or was fresh home from a procedure - they would take care of him. They were all partners in crime... Now that my son has passed my Male Dog was lost for so long but has since become thinking he is my boyfriend. They are the most lovable dogs ever. Your sons ages are perfect - as they learn together. Best of luck with your new OES. & Yes DO MICRO CHIP HIM/HER.
