What are some good Charities to give to?

International? Local? There are so many. Who would you recommend? A must for us is for the operating/overhead/advertising costs to be low.

We are going to give to one that is local and helps a lot of people. But we would like to give to some others. Only we aren't sure who to. Any ideas out there? Is it better to keep your money local and help out people in your state? Or should International help be given to help those in horrid conditions? Maybe a mix?

What are your favorite Charities? And why?

How about giving/donating to an OES rescue?
My donations this year are going to the animals -
MN OES rescue (Nancy doesn't know yet),
basset rescue serving MN, WI and northern IL - www.bbrescue.org
the rescue I got our 2 horses and pony from - www.mnhoovedanimalrescue.org
and a malamute rescue - for the cart I got. The person with the cart asked that a donation be made to her breed rescue instead of payment to her.
I agree! Many of our OES rescues are non-profit organizations (including Tarheel OES Rescue). 8)
Although we stay in Germany Linda & I always donate something to the Scottish OES rescue as they really do need the help. :)
If you are also looking to help people, the "Out Reach" programs through local churches puts the money in your neighborhood.
Salvation Army; Red Cross; FEED the Children; Jewish American International; Local food banks (can donate food & cash).

One place that seems to get overlooked is our own families, friends and neigbors. I know we often judge what they'd do with the money or gifts - but if we are giving it with no strings attached......... its really none of our business what they do with it......... Just don't give cash - give food, etc...
Thanks for the suggestions. We are looking to give more towards human based charities. The one that we had already picked out was the Oregon Food Bank. It seemed good as demand for food is up 13% in Oregon with the rough economy.

mouthypf - You raise a good point to look out for friends and relatives in need. We prefer the non-cash route in those cases where possible, for the stated reasons. Although most recently someone ran into serious trouble with county property taxes, and they don't accept groceries. Least we know that the money went to good use in helping them stay in their house.
The"out reach" programs help people pay their electric/heat bills. Maybe pay a dr bill they need to pay. It is very diverse and does help many.
