Samsung ln52a650 52 inch LCD with a touch of color

Yup that's right. I bought a big TV. A 52 inch Hi Def LCD TV. ln52650a

OH NO! The worst imaginable thing has happened as expected. I got that stupid video package from FiOS and started watching TV like crazy, recording stuff and skipping all the commercials.

Now, I gotta have it bigger.

So I went on Amazon.com and I ordered it. Under 1900 bux. Free shipping. No Tax (although of course I will pay the state sales tax (technically a usage tax, I'd guess) with my tax return)

LN52A650 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color

I know that the price will keep falling. Someday (soon) I will come back here and find this same set (or one better) for under $1,000. But I could wait forever. I have been debating this for quite some time.

The picture on this set is so unbelievable, comparing it side-by-side with others and Plasma sets it just has incredible "pop" and well, it looks great. In the store, anyway. It was "on sale" at Best Buy (BB) for $2200. Plus delivery and tax. I don't know what they would charge for delivery, but the tax would have been $110. It was $2,000 on Amazon.com with free shipping.

Then BB lowered it's price to $2,000 and Amazon lowered it's price to $1,900. So now it's $2,100 vs $1,900. Then $1,881. Did I mention I had some unused Amazon Gift Certificates for the last 3 or 4 years? Did I mention it was more than $350 worth of certificates?

So there ya have it. I got the TV and a cable shipped to my home for just over $1,525 out of pocket. Such a deal.

So don't expect to see much more of me once this thing gets delivered. (Although they say I can hook up my PC to it, too... :D :D :D) Say your goodbyes now. It's been fun. Delivery was supposed to be after the 24th... but now they are saying the 24th. But it's snowing... so you may have me around for another day or two. Now I need some speakers and a decent stereo setup... maybe one of them fancy blu-ray thangs with a home theater thingy.

Ordering that FiOS for $30 a month sure was expensive.

OK that is one heck of a telly.
A lady I clean for asked if I wanted her old TV. It is a little old, but a good size screen. I've been without TV for nearly a year now. I started thinking about all the things I could watch.. then I thought about the Sky package I saw advertised recently.. all those programmes.. I could watch all my favourites AND MORE. For 3 hours I agonized over whether I should take that TV, knowing I could persuade Dad to get Sky too. I've never had Sky before and LORD knows we wants it.

I realised I had gotten into way too much of a frenzy, this TV thing was dangerous!! I'm just not ready for all that stimulation, it's too much for someone who's not used to it. Of course the job hunting would be straight out the window. I could see myself surrounded by junk food wrappers, twice the size and sunk right into bed unable to move apart from my changing channel finger 8O
So I passed up the offer, feeling like I had been tempted by a drug pusher.
TV is a distant dream for me, one I know I can't handle right now, I have way too much spare time.

Ron, I hope you are a stronger person than I. It was lovely knowing you.
Oooooh, I likey likey! We're also looking at a LCD since we have a lot of sunlight in our living room, and I'm THINKING of getting one for Mr. J's bday. THINKING about it ...have a hard time buying one when I think the tv we have works just fine.

Isn't delivery free w/bb? At least it was when my parents got one a few months ago or maybe it was a special because we also looked at one ...and they were going to offer free set-up and delivery. I like newegg.com for my electronics, but I'm afraid we won't be able to set it up!!
oh sweet!!! now I have tv envy

You must be preparing early for april 1st. Use the TV as your excuse for closing down the site? ;)
Nice set up Ron!! :D Happy Ho Ho Ho to you!! 8) It's been really nice knowing you. See ya in June.
I downloaded the size charts explaining why we need a minimum 50" for us. He counters, why are we satisified with the size we have. Can't get thru his age damaged head because of different orientation of pix.

I agree, I'm not impressed with plasma unless super huge size and I understand the screen burns out faster. Good viewing Ron. 8) We can't let JO get one or else who would run this site??
In 1992 I purchased a 31" TV and a LaserDisc player for an incredible amount of money. The TV was about $1,000 and the Disc Player was about $1,300. Don't forget all of those discs! At $75 or $80 a pop. Fortunately I found a place that rented and sold used LaserDiscs so I got most for $15 to $25 each... about what the going rate is for a brand new DVD now, isn't it? And that was 17 years ago when $20 was a lot of money!

Anyway, that TV burned out maybe 7 or 8 years ago I think and I replaced it with the least expensive 27" TV I could get, I think I paid just about $300 for it. DVDs took over the market and they stopped producing LaserDiscs, the store closed and eventually I packed away the LaserDisc player too.

I'll have to hunt up the player and probably an S-Video cable for it and see how it looks. I know that it was supposed to be superior to DVDs (but the disc is 12 inches and weights a couple of pounds, the DVD was far more convenient) and produced better resolution than could be seen on a standard TV. The first disc I got was an Indiana Jones movie (the one with Sean Connery... Raiders of the Lost Ark, perhaps?) and it was dynamite on the 31" set.... ;)

I really got work on something for the sound. I think I have an older prologic receiver tucked away in the loft, now I'll just have to get some speakers. I (essentially) gave the big floor speakers away when we started out big trip in 2002. Oh how I wish I hadn't now. :(

Of course a Blu-Ray player would be better but that is definitely not in the cards. It's not the player hardware, it's the price of the software, the movies.
Are Blu-ray's that much more? We have a 50" Samsung DLP tv we bought 2 years ago. When they came to realign our HD satellite they hooked up the 4 year old home theatre for us. I have so much trouble with that thing. I don't understand why it echoes on certain discs and after commercials. We now have it set to aux 1 and use the remote to go to prologic. I am ready to call Samsung and ask as the manual is way too confusing for me. I used to work in engineering and I have never had so much trouble figuring an audio appliance out. I do like using all 6 speakers though. I wish you were here Ron...I know you could figure it out. :D
I dunno, I think there's a sound system expert on the forum who might be better suited! :D I'm not at liberty to say who that might be, but you could ask Mandy.

Tomorrow between 12 and 4 !

It's been nice knowing you all...

PS Have you tried turning on/off the prologic or other sound processing systems?
It's addictive to be able to record anything, and fast forward commercials etc... I watch way more tv now than I ever did before... not necessarily a good thing LOL
I think that's the one at the BX Jason has been eyeing. They have it on sale for $1200 right now - 52". It's hard to pass it up, especially when we come home and have to hit our two year old HD tv on the side because the colors start turning green (hitting it seems to bring the colors back). :? We can't afford it right now though, and I'm not about to get it on credit so it'll have to wait!

Glad to hear it's a good one though, and I hope you enjoy your FIOS. ;)
There isn't a flash on the camera I had available...

The movie isn't a widescreen movie so it doesn't fill the whole frame, but I took this for the benefit of a friend (who, believe it or not) hates this movie. So I thought it was a fitting picture to send to her... and just a fitting picture in general when talking about such an extravagant luxury.

See you all later... :(
