I'm going back to prison tomorrow!

.....to pick up my dog who has been going through intensive obedience training. For those of you who missed my earlier post - Snoop the Pit Bull puppy (a rescue) who I first met at 12 weeks was socialized at offleash dog parks, with my 18 special needs bunnies, 9 cats ranging from those with broken pelvis to one eyed kitties, and of course Merlin and Panda.

I hadn't planned on keeping the little fellow - just wanted to give him a good start in life. As time passed, I realized as one member gave me heck for and deservedly so, for even my initial reaction to a Pitty. It made me think and I thank her profusely for this as I realized even a mega animal lover like me had predjudices.I became increasingly concerned he may fall into the wrong hands and no pup deserves that and besides I love the little guy who won over my heart.

Snoop, is now five months and recently neutered and being too busy to do it myself and not wanting to miss a crutial time period in his life I enrolled him in the program. The prison usually takes the most unadoptable dogs from shelters to go through 6 wks of intensive training and funds it by taking the occasional private case. Snoop, has lived in the Federal Penetentiary for the past two weeks. (I'm a private case and while he has been an angel so far, I wanted him to be a well trained pup.) He's still a puppy but even so he's been pretty good about listening. I may take him back for more training after Christmas or enroll Merlin. Panda, who I've always spent the most time training is the best behaved.

Tomorrow, I go to learn how to keep up his training with the co-ordinator of the program, a woman who has done amazing things with dogs. I'm looking forward to it and from her reports Snoop's a giant love bug who has been easy to train and got along with all the dogs. No food or toy issues, but he's kinda like a Cartman on SouthPark. Funny, that's what Merlin's breeder originally had named him! He must have learned that from Merlin. While it's been nice to be back to 2 dogs for a short while - I miss Snoop...so yes, guess he's a keeper.

hey Marianne, have fun in the "Big House". :D :D :D

So glad that you kept Snoop, I have a two friends who have Pitty's and they are fantastic dogs... It's all in the early social training, and it sounds like you did an outstanding job....
Have fun - and we need more pictures!!!

One of our therapy dog chapter members has a prison dog. Abby is a black labradoodle who looked more like the lab half (and sheds) so she ended up in a shelter. Luckily she was recognized as a super puppy, and put into the prison program in Kansas. She is Chewie's friend!!
Enjoy the new pup and hope the training continues to go well after he gets out. A friend of mine has a pit and the dog is wonderful. It just depends on who gets them and how they are raised. They can be a sweet dog if trained properly. Sounds like you are on the right path with him. Good Luck Snoop.
Marianne,

way off topic, but i haven't been here for a while (how dumb was that!)
but did you get that house with the great yard you wanted?

and good luck with the new baby!
Thanks for all the well wishes everyone! You guys are wonderful!!!

Lora, Yes I did buy my dream home!! For months I've been "moving". Long process with all my furkids which involved getting former foster cats over to the new place first, then my cats (they had never met each other), then daily visits with one dog at a time, then two.....now will be three, making sure there was a temp enclosure for bunnies....

The pup threw a wrench in the whole thing as many of the previously injured cats/sickly/feral cats had never even been around dogs. Panda was the goodwill ambassador of dog kingdom (he's such a gentle soul), then Merlin , then pup..ha ha. It's why it's been such a long process as the "foster cats" always had their own indoor room and outdoor catroom attached, but never had contact with the canines or my own cats but could see them.

I've repeated myself for years that whatever work you initially put in - makes a huge difference in years to come and I want everyone to live peacefully together.

I've been doing this for two months!!! OMG I'm exhausted - I'm almost there - House is now decorated for Christmas, cards are up and I'm spending Christmas at my new place - finally! The nice thing is for the first time in 7 years - there's two incomes coming in instead of just mine..maybe some day I'll be able to enjoy a meal in a restuarant again! Luckily I found a guy that likes animals as much as me!

Pics of my new place are on my photo icon. The "Blue Riviera" - Blue for my recently passed ole boy and Riviera for the lil dog I couldn't save from euthenasia at a shelter 3 years ago. The place is going to be a forever home for aged and unadoptable pets. (okay pup isn't aged but he needed a home too).

Okay....enough of my looooooong ramble...sheesh I "talk" a lot.....
So Marianne....Tell us some more about this guy. I know we asked this question before but there has to be something new(and juicy) to tell us.
I loved the subject of this post Marianne.
So how well trained is the Pup? Did he miss you?
:D Glad to get an update! Not at all surprised that you're keeping puppie! The new place looks wonderful! Miss you! Congrats!
Marianne,

i am soooooo happy that you got your house!
isn't is great?... when you really want something and you really work hard to get it, you just might succeed! we laugh at impossible

but this new guy???? whoa! i have me some catchin' up - huh?

congratulations!
I am so proud of you...I knew you would keep him and I am so glad you went through this program :D
You are doing a really great thing, I am so happy & so is snoop :D
PS love the name :D
WOW!!!!!! What a difference 2 wks of good training makes! Pup is a completely different boy!

I walked into the gym where various activities were going on - pup totally focused on the person working with him. Eyes looking up and in sit position. He noticed me but didn't come over to greet me until he was given the okay command. I brought home a well behaved boy (nothing is for free method) with clicker training. He goes back in January after I've worked with him for a few weeks.

As for the guy......

Long story kept short. I went to Paris in 2000. Met a guy who developes games for Playstation, Xbox and Sony in Europe and who dabbles in magic. We liked each other, he visited me in Canada for 6 months and then went back to Holland. This continued for the next 7-8 years. I wasn't going to live there as wouldn't leave my pets and too difficult to transport that many aged ones. I wouldn't leave one son here either as he lived on his own to go live in another country.
Last year, Kaj (pronounced Kai) got a job in Canada, immigration came through in late Aug. We bought the house 10 days later for all the pets. Ta Da! He sometimes drives me crazy but I'm domesticating him. My number one criteria is Must love Pets..was already there so was the start of a beautiful friendship.
That sounds like a great program. You have such a huge heart, Marianne. The pup is lucky to have you as a mom. :)

I also want to tell you how sorry I was to read Blue had passed last night. I didn't want to bump up the thread since it's several months old, but he definitely was a special boy.
