A Magic OES

Hi Everyone,

Those of you that have been around this site know that I'm a special ed teacher but also am a professional magician. I've travelled the world in the past and my dream was always to have an OES appear on stage with me. I won the title of the Worlds Funniest Magician in 1999 so what better dog to have than an OES which would compliment me as he'd be goofier than me!! Ha Ha. ( I haven't travelled at all in the last few years since I've been mom to Merlin and Panda.) In fact, given up performing most of my shows this past year due to my son's illness and also wanting to spend the weekends with him and my four legged boys.

Like most I'm not thrilled when I see magicians whom use live animals in their acts - no doves or bunnies in my act...except stuffed animals. As no matter what, the main concern is always the animals well being and if they really want to be up there. Since Merlin was 12 wks old I've brought him to all my magic meetings so as to get used to crowds, sounds. loud noises..etc...I kinda feel like a hypocrite as I have always dreamed of one day buying an OES pup and having him as my working partner. Just like Shaggy was in the past, except we did educational pet talks for schools and community centers.

Funny how with each of my OES's...people have said...you know that dog suits you. I'm thinking we have the same type of personalities? Or I really need to get the hair of my eyes and be groomed more often? Dunno?

I've brought Merlin to school with me on many occasions and on top of that are daily walks or visits to the dog park. Always socializing and getting him to experience new situations. Still despite that , I wouldn't have a qualm about not using Merlin if I saw he did not enjoy the experience. He's more important to me than any show .I also have just spent the past 15 months more on socialization and basic commands more than any magical training. I see this as a very long term process and probably won't do the serious training until he's two and then his first appearance on stage may not happen for another year. So a very long term project.

Anyway I thought my act was going to be different...and the World Championship of Magic is going to be in three more years...so plenty of time for work. ( FISM which is like the Olympics of magic is held once every four years in a major European city.)

The someone sent me this mail..haaaaaaa it's so funny. You guys should check it out!!!

Ohhhh No!!! Would you still consider doing the same, or is the, uhhh, "cat out of the bag" at this point?
Well then I had to tell the other magicians that led me to this site...oh yeah but mine are real....

Funny how a lot of woman say that! Ah forgive my lame humor!

(Watch me make that post disappear...!)

Just imagining the size of top hat you'd need to pull a sheepie out of.....
 I think Marianne would make the better picture, with all three of her boys!
I somehow think you & Merlin won't have any trouble rising above him as competition... (no levitation required).
Look what you kids do late at night. I'm always kind of amazed at how many other people are up at the odd hours.
Hi Again,

Thanks for your vote of confidence you guys! For those that didn't know what the heck I was talking about you have to look at http://www.magicmagazine.com to know why I made the comment I did. Ha ha! Can you believe that's his assistant in that costume!!!!

I should mention Merlin was born with show biz in his blood - Do you remember the 1960's hit by Merilee Rush? - Just Call Me Angel Of The Morning. It was revised by Juice Newton in the 80's and both times became number one on the radio. Merilee performed on American Bandstand and Ed Sullivan in the 60's and 70's and still tours to this day. Anyway.....That's who Merlin's breeder is!!!

It was actually funny how I purchased Merlin from her as I had called the AKC for recommendations and they gave me several names of breeders. I settled on one whom I feel very comfortable with but hadn't made the association of her name at the time. She had some new pups whom had been born to championship parents, as well as grandparents, so the pups were highly sought after as she bred them specifically for gentleness. That's what was important to me. Still, I had only wanted one of pet quality and not show but there were only show ones available.

She wasn't going to give me one at first, as this pup was going to be a show dog and she wanted the new owner to be able to do this. I wasn't interested in following this pursuit. Shaggy had been declining in her health and so she knew that I was an experienced owner as Shaggy was 14 at the time.

What convinced her to allow me to purchase one besides my experience, was I was in showbiz!! I was always honest in what I had hoped to do with the pup in the future and she thought it was pretty neat. I think it was meant to be.

She orginally named him Cartman after the show Southpark. Silly me I had never seen the show and thought the character must be this docile gentle guy. Ha! If you get a chance to see the show you realize how wrong I was!

Well enough babbling from me ..that's Merlins history, Panda, on the otherhand whose history is not as well known, is far better behaved...you just never know.

Maxmm - This site shows Eastern time I believe, and I live on the WestCoast so my time zone (Pacific) is actually 3 hours earlier but still shows up as Eastern time. 8O Still, I'm up at all hours and usually manage only 4 hrs per night.

Hi Marianne,

I didn't realize that was a person in there?!?! I'm still not sure!

Yes, timezones can be confusing on a site that has posters from around the globe, but the time that each person sees should be (and I did emphasise "should") in each person's local time.

On your own "profile" page (reached via the button near the very top of the screen that looks like a person and says "Profile") there is a place near the bottom where you can adjust the board to your own timezone.

I live in Massachusetts, so mine is set for "GMT-5", for the west coast of North America, it should be set to "GMT-8".

If I recall, an older version of this software had some difficulties in the times zones during Daylight Savings Time, but that may be fixed now. If not, we can cross that bridge when we get there by simply adjusting that same time zone option by an hour.
Ron, I'm glad I'm not alone in not realizing that that was a costume!

The time zone thing can be goofy. I have relatives in Washington state and there are always inadvertent phone calls super late at night or super early in the morning because one of us wasn't thinking about it.
I was in Las Vegas once and my mom called at 4 o'clock in the morning because she forgot about the time difference. (Thankfully I was asleep in my room. )

Ron (again): I am very confused and just reread your post. I was never really a geography person but why is your time set for west coast time? Wishful thinking? You know California has 5 basball teams, you could increase your chances of another championship if you lived there and converted!

Hmmmmm... what I meant to say was in two parts... probably should have had a period or another word in there. How's this:

Ron Shoulda wrote:

Any better?
Oh, I get it.
Person in the costume, Ron lives on the east coast. I think I'm caught up now. No Child Left Behind just expanded to incorporate the OES Forum. :)
Just have one more thing to add...

"Yeah but mine are real", now has different meaning after viewers realize that the sheepie in a photo...um is a costume...See Ron I was keeping it PG rated!!!

Marianne and the boys
ahh!

you're a magician, your dog is merlin!

it all makes sense now...

i think a sheepie in your act (a real one at that) would be HILARIOUS!! You should sell a video, I'll buy anything oes related!
