Tater 10/11/00 - 12/10/08

I don't really know how to start. We just lost Macy. Tater (black lab) had been in a gradual decline, and we attributed it to Macy. They lived together, hunted together and Tater never knew life without Macy.

Tater was ADHD - almost to the point of driving one crazy. Such a shock to see him slowing down, but thought - well, he is 8 yrs old now. He was starting to lose weight, and have some weakness in his hind legs. Then, 2 weeks ago he was losing big weight - just when Macy was bad and we had separated them (Macy moved into the barn from the kennel. She needed to be in the soft hay in the front area, as she was unable to get up on the cement.)

I took him to the vet, and they kept him for 3 days, doing blood work, urine tests and xrays. Whatever was making him ill was elusive. Ended up he was in liver and kidney failure and having CNS symptoms too - head tilted to the side, ataxia and eventually eyes not blinking in unison.

Looking back, what I attributed to Macy's age, actually was quite similar in symptoms. So, it looks like my 2 labs were a victim of something environmental - bad food, something in the water, or poisoned. (the poison is very remote - I can think of NO reason for this to happen - but there are weird people out there, and in their kennel someone would have access to them.)

All the other dogs are fine, thank goodness.

There was one 50 pound bag of food that Macy and Tater alone were fed - unusual, as I otherwise fed the same to all. I bought the bag the end of September, so they would have eaten it in October. There have been no reports of this food causing problems - in fact it was a food that was being recommended as an alternative for people who fed Canidae and were concerned about the formulary change. I plan on contacting the company, but it really is grasping at straws.

I never thought to lose these 2 like this, so close.
And poor Tazz, with his horrid CHF and grossly enlarged heart, still keeps plugging on. He seems happy, so hopefully no more posts here for me for a long time.
