Dreidel emoticon

Ron...we need a dreidel emoticon!!!!!! Is there such a thing?
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
Oh is that the thing with the Hebrew letters on? Someone sent a card with that on it, I thought I had just been studying too much, I'm learning the Hebrew alphabet (my grandad was Jewish but we never met) and thought it had all gone to my head
Hmmmm.... Well...
Take your pick... it's a difficult choice.

I like #3, still trying to work out what a "Driedel"is :lmt:
I choose #5~
It looks like a top - and I know it is Jewish. I have been listening to kids Christmas CD's, and there is a Dreidel song - something about being made of clay.....?
Anyway, at first I thought they were singing "Draino"

Rotflmao
I'm Methodist....but #6 seems more like me :)
I like them all...and I am the guilty party. I put a small dreidel on my card for all of the Jewish OES.org members on the mailing list. I like #6.
okay; should I be alarmed that I'm the only Jew here?!? I don't even observe the holidays, but I know what a dreidel is...

Dreidel is a game children play at Chanukah. Its a 4 sided top, with a character marked on each side. Its essentially a gambling game; each side translates to something like "win all the pot", "win half the pot", "lose a turn" and "lose all your coins". As kids we played it with "Gelt" ( no, not guilt, though also very Jewish) which are those golden wrapped chocolate coins.

I swear its the worst chocolate you ever tasted, but it tasted so good because you won it from someone else.

Thank you for the explaination! It sounds like a fun game.
While there's a thread, ....there aren't any Dreidel's that are vomiting and farting? Just trying to knock two stones out at once. 8)

Oy sweetheart...don't be alarmed. You are not alone here. Many, many of us! And then you have me...the quintessental Jewish Mother!!!!

Now...go eat something!
And I'm STILL waiting for the yarmulke oy vey emoticon! (Debcram named me an honorary Jew so I'm entitled to ask for it). And I like numbers 1 and 7 for the dreidel.
Ron, I vote for happy Dreidel number 5.

Dreidels actually were orginally used as a teaching device. Jewish children were not allowed to go to school, so the parents made these, so they could learn their letters.

(PS Ron, thanks!
Me too Allison...come here and I'll feed you...it's almost time for brisket and Latkes. I knew we connected on a special level.

Hey Wendy!!! I'm making brisket and latkes for Hanukah too!!!!!!!! We are having our party 12/28.

I better get the menorah polished soon!
I usually just do one here with my neighbors family. His dad is Jewish born, though they are all Christians. We just plan it on the fly when we all have time. Gotta start looking for that briskit. lol.
I like number 7! While not Jewish, I studied all the traditions because they interest me.
What do the letters on the sides of the dreidel stand for? I'm assuming they are letters from the Hebrew alphabet.
I like three and was raised catholic but know what a dreidle is - its a big world people!!

but whya do we want a religious icon? or has it lost religious symbolism?

I am still looking for the poor sybil icon. the newf list has some great rotflmao and other funny icons (hint hint)

Kerry, its not really a religious icon...I'd equate it more with an orniment, or a stocking.
I like #5 I can't wait to tell my sister about our new icon- she converted (her husband is jewish) and my young nieces teach me hebrew. I love it

what she said. Same with the Menorah; though thats a little closer to societally recognized "icon". Part of Judiasm is "no graven images"; so we really don't have anything that equates with a cross, crucifix, or other sorts of associative icons. The closest may be the Star of David, but that's also the flag of Israel now, and still not really a religious icon, so much as a rallying image for Hebrew Nationality.
Allison, I don't believe a symbol is the same as a graven image. A menorah is a symbol for the miracle of light. We don't worship a menorah...even though it seems to have been commercialized too. We just eat and light candles and pray...eating is a big part of our religion.

Maybe the fridge is a graven image... 8O 8O

Right; thats what i was getting at. There's no real "religous icons" for Judiasm; so just about anything it fair game for an emoticon. But food would be best. How about a Kugel icon? Or Hamentashen? Rugelach!!! YUM!
i like 3 5 and 6....

and it IS all about the food.......deb, i want some of your home cooking....whhhhy do you live so far away??????

i guess im honorary too...one of my best girlfriends is jewish and the very first time we met, she asked me "are you jewish?" ....which i took as a very high compliment from her!
Darcy, it would be my honor to feed you anytime!!!!!

I should make you a brisket, freeze it, and overnight it to you! Think that would work?
Oy vey!

First off, "dreidel" is pronounced "DRAY-del" similar to the word "ladel" (big spoon) and almost like "fatal". Dreidel is Yiddish literally meaning "to spin". The Hebrew term for the same object is sevivon, which means "spinner". It is a four-sided top. It can be made of any material.

The four sides of the dreidel have Hebrew letters on them. They are Nun, Gimel, Hey and Shin -- they stand for the phrase, "Nes gadol hayah sham" which translates as, "A great miracle happened there." In Israel however, the dreidel has a bit if a difference. Since the events hap pend "here" in Israel, instead of the "Shin" there is a "Pay" which stands for Po and now the phrase is "Nes Gadol Hayah Po," which translates as, "A great miracle happened here."

The great miracle referred to is this:
When the Jews revolted against Hellenic rule, they needed to rededicate (Chanukah means "rededication") their Temple. Part of having a rededicated temple is having an "eternal light" burning above the Holy Ark which contains the Torah.

In the temple was found only one small vial of holy oil large enough to keep the eternal light burning for one day. Holy oil requires 8 days to be prepared. They lit the eternal light anyway and the oil lasted 8 days until the new batch of holy oil was prepared. The celebration of Chanukah is all about the miracle of the oil, and not a celebration of victory in war.

In religious terms, Chanukah is classified as a minor holiday, but don't tell that to kids in our current modern society! With it's proximity to Christmas, Chanukah has become a major family event, and a time of gift giving. The two are so intertwined that many gentiles refer to Chanukah as the "Jewish Christmas", which is (of course) not correct at all.

The game played with the dreidel starts by everyone putting one into the pot. "One" could be anything (a nut, for example), but usually is a chocolate coin known as Chanukah Gelt. The players then take turns spinning the dreidel. When the dreidel stops the side face up determines that player's action:

"Nun" stands for "nisht" which means "nothing." The player takes nothing.

"Gimel" stands for "gantz" which means "all." The player takes the entire pot.

"Heh" stands for "halb" which means "half." The player wins half the pot. If there is an odd number, the player takes the extra one.

"Shin"/"Po" stands for "shtel"/"?"* which means "put in." The player must put two of his own into the pot.

If the pot is empty (someone has spun a Gimel, or a Heh with only one in the pot) all players must put one in, including the spinner who took from the pot.

Play continues until everyone is bored or someone has all the gelt.
At the end of the game, the gelt is usually redistributed by the winner(s), maybe taking an extra piece for him/herself.

*I can't find any reference to a Hebrew word beginning with the letter Pay being used to mean "put in".
I guess it is up to us to make one up.

Guess that means, I have to buy ANOTHER roasting pan!

Actually, making all of those briskets would probably put me in a great mood. I love cooking, and don't do much of it these days.

The only cure is 3 latkes, apple sauce, 3 oz of brisket, and fresh asparagus, a quick game of Dreidel :dreidel5: !

Oh Yes, and a bag of chocolate Hanukkah "gelt" (coins).

OH MY! I just happened to have that as my menu for Hanukkah!
My father was in the candy business so once in awhile he'd bring home Gelt. It was just awful chocolate. I wonder if it is now made in China and has a little plastic powder in it?

Thanks Ron for the rules of dreidel. I went to school in a high Jewish population area and our school holiday plays were always half Jewish, half Christian, so I already knew about dreidel, but never the rules.....such as they are. "Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay. And when it's dry and ready, Dreidel I will play."
side note...deb, will you put the apple sauce on the side? i like mine better with sourcream 8)

This is the recipe I posted under Cooking: Easy meat:
If you want to make him a really delicious meat meal here's my tastiest. But...it takes a long time to cook.

Buy a beef brisket, about 3 pounds (he'll have wonderful sandwiches with the leftovers, both cold and you can make bbq beef from it). Sprinkle the bottom and top with a packet of Liptons Onion soup mix. Put it in a pan, with fat side up (if there is a fat side), add water to fill about 1/2 way up the pan. Roast at low heat (300 degrees) for about 35 minutes per pound. Keep checking to make sure there is enough water. The water will make a wonderful au jus. Let it cool before you cut it, or it will fall apart. And be sure to cut it against the grain.

Everyone loves my brisket! Enjoy.

It is wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OOPS! Guess I just put my brisket business, outta business!

That is the same Brisket recipe I was given by my Mom, that she has been making forever. It is the ONLY thing my Mother can cook.... and it is awesome. The only difference is my Mom's recipe calls for it to be cooked wrapped with two heavy duty pieces of foil also with water. The one on the bottom holding the water.
But it can be rather messy if it spills through the foil.
OMG :excited: I forgot to say to wrap it tightly in heavy duty alum foil!!!

Thanks Elissa!!! Your mom is brilliant!
