These Cute Paws Are Killing Me

Well, maybe not literally.

However, I have these two new (to me) sheepdog boys... I know they are "paw-y" dogs, but this is ridiculous.

I have got them to settle down a LOT, but when I am at the computer they invariably come up and whack my arms with their noses. If I tighten my arms to my sides, so that they can't do this, they paw at me.

This might be cute to some people, but the thing is, it HURTS. It also hurts when they whack my arms, because I have bad elbows and they always whack my elbows.

Not trying to be a wimp, but I need this to stop.

Any suggestions how to get them to paw me less? I do wonder if me petting them (not when they do this though) is making them think this is ok?

There were some dominance issues when they first arrived, we are working on that, with a lot of success, but this pawing me thing is driving me nuts. Putting big fluffy socks on them is not going to happen.

They get enough exercise, I give them appropriate attention, etc. They were alone A Lot prior to me getting them due to illness of the previous owner.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Toby does this to me EVERY NIGHT and it drive me crazy! But he never does it just for no reason, he ALWAYS wants something (usually a marrow bone), so if I give in, he'll leave me alone. Who's in charge here?
don't pet them for doing this. you might want to work on go to place where they learn the command to go to their mat or some other place. they need to respect your work space and time.
Yes I was afraid that came out wrong. I definitely do NOT pet them for doing this. I was just wondering if me petting them "in general" would somehow encourage this. I do not have them "shake a paw" either, as I noticed this being an issue the minute they came here.

What I did for a while was just quietly got up and went in the basement and completely ignored them for it.

I got the basement pretty much cleaned, and it kept me from getting angry, (this whacking really hurts my elbows - not to mention i am concerned they are going to do it when i am drinking coffee...) but it didn't solve the problem in the long run.

Will try the "go to" thing. Usually I am pretty sure what they want is attention, but they would take attention 24/7, and I am just not going to do that.
my first trainer said never teach a dog under two to shake - you'll lose interest before they do and they will use it to get attention. I still haven't taught the three year olds to do it becasue this breed can be pretty "handy"
When I'm not paying "enough" attention to Sheriff Lizzie, she'll nip my clothing and tug at it.

We've been working on this, and its getting better, but every now and then, she still does it.

How can they be so cute and annoying at the same time?
Have you been to classes and learned the "leave it" command yet??
If not, I would! It works great. :D
The dogs went to class before I had them, yes. I have been trying to find out from the previous owners what commands they know, so I use the right words. Due to the illness of the former owner, they are really busy so, no reply as of yet.

My other dogs, I always trained them in a manner so that I could just talk as I normally talk - not "COME", but "come on" not "SIT" but "sit down", not "KENNEL UP", but "get in your crate". These dogs apparently know all the "doggie" terms they teach at classes, but I don't.

I am pretty sure I solved about all their annoying behaviors in one swoop last night. If it was truly successful, will let you know. It appears it might be as I got out of bed this morning with nobody barking in my face, nobody whining, nobody getting in my bed over the night, and the one dog is still in his bed. (No, I did not kill them) (That was a bad attempt at before-coffee humor)

Not a bad attempt at all! I thought maybe you drugged them and was going to ask what you used, LOL.

I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but I don't think your problems are solved, I think you just got lucky this morning. Been there, done that, still working on it.
