Breathing Problems

Can anyone help?

Charlie started having breathing problems some weeks ago. She breathes very heavy (a couple of times at night!) and it sounds like she would bloat! It takes some minutes and then it's gone. But I realised she only got it when we are at home, never outside!

She had it again today and I'm worried and wonder what it is and does she needs a check up? I know the Vet always will give you medicine, sometimes the might not need it but they earn loads of money so I'm asking you all for advice first!

When she breathes heavy I stroke her back and neck to calm her down and give her a cuddle. Why would she only get it at home???

Thanks soo much for any advice!!!

Hi!
Does she stop, when you touch her?If not it can be many things. From heart disease to Allergy.
My 9 year old female OES does it also, but almost to get more attention.
(very clever girl, hihi)I have been at the vet for a big check up because i worried about that kind of breathing. He said she is [very healthy.

Sometimes it does stop but not today, that's why I was concerned. But it did stopped some minutes later when I continued cuddled and stroked her!

Great thought about getting more attention, she didnt had it before and maybe that's really the reason as she feels bored sometimes since we came back from our holidays in Munich (yes, I'm bavarian!!) where we've been with her 24hours for 3 weeks!! She loved it, never complained or anything! Hope it's what you think it is!

Thank you so much!xx
Hi,

Sorry to hear about Charlie. My first thought was it sounded something similar to something my previous girl, Shaggy, developed as she aged. Rapid breathing - usually when she was in a prone position and not related to over activity at the time. Turned out she had a heart murmur. Don't want to cause you alarm or misdiagnose but perhaps it's worth checking out or you could try to check her pulse and try to time it. Check regular dog pulse online for large dogs to give you some clue if it's in the normal range. I'd still get her checked out just to be sure and it will give you peace of mind. Good luck to you!

We went through some really extreme night time panting and freak outs with Portage. We changed his eating schedule, and things are great now. I think he was eating his final meal either too close to bed or too soon after his middle meal (he was on three as he has bloated and I wanted lots of little ones).

We put him down to two and he's been fine at night. Breathing can also be heart, but just a few moments of it seems unlikely. When our Theeps had a heart murmur (and failure) his main symptom was a short cough. Meds cleared up the congestion within a day and he did really well. Portage (or eleven year old now) has a more serious heart murmur than his brother did, and we're monitoring him closely, but no signs of breathing problems as of yet.

Weird panting is also a very, very common sign of anxiety. It could be something really minor that's freaking her out just a bit, and she's learning that you'll comfort her (how could you not, of course?) ...that could lead to lots more of the behaviour.

Or, it could be something really simple as she's getting hot at night and wakes up panting.

There are so many possibilities. Our Portage sometimes wakes up from a running dream and is panting like crazy. He needs a few minutes to "catch his breath" and then go back to sleep.

Good luck to you both.
Did the breathing problems start at the same time you put the central heating on?

Maybe she is too hot when its on?

Hope you can find the cause
I thought the same about the heating. Ru pants heavily until he has cooled down, sometimes it takes only a few seconds, usually less than a minute.
I think I just put the heating on in the livingroom where she was resting on the sofa when it happend cause I was working in the livingroom. Most of the time there is no heating in the livingroom as we hardly sit in it, apart from Charlie!

There is no heating in my bedroom too but she's going down to the livingroom every night cause it's cooler!

I will ask the Vet today as I have to go over to pick up her vaccination card, she just got checked (Pulse, Blood) 2 weeks ago and I was told today that the blood test was fine!

it's just strange that these breathing problems are only happen at home!?? :?:
Anything in the furnishings that could be causing it?

Like dust mites can aggrevate humans with asthma.

Or maybe a new plant or buch of flowers?

It could be possible but I dont know. My son got asthma too, who knows maybe dogs can get asthma?

The thing is she only got it here and then, not regulary and not every day. Sometimes only once a week, but I think she got it longer than I remember. I dont know when it started but remember she had it in the old house too.

But when I stroke her it mostly stops. Also it only happens when she is resting and trying to sleep, that's the strange thing!

I havent got in contact with the Vet yet as someone wanted to call me but it was occupied caus I been on the phone and he didnt call back and I'm working every day so I couldnt call back but will try again next week.

I dont know if it's something urgent as she didnt had now anything since last week. Strange strange!!?? 8O
We have to have the fan on in the living room for Summer. She lays right in front of it. Either that or she does her draught excluding impression by the front door. Hope you get it sorted x
