Shipping a pup

Somehow I feel that the pup will get so upset.
I know many have bought and had a pup shipped, but what REALLY does that do to this little babe that has just gotten taken from his mom and sibs.
It has to scare the pup and I have a hard time with this.
Anyone who has had a pup come to them by air, please help!!!!

Heart was shipped to me...and I was very concerned about it.

But I can honestly say she was fine. She did not 'go' in the airline kennel and I think if she were that scared she would have.

She DID sleep very good the first night home.......I DIDN"T ( i was so nervous..I kept watching her breath all night....) but she did........ :D :D :D :D
I always feel bad for the pup as well, but they get over that scare ...like anything new they will experience in the coming months of becoming older (seeing their first shadow, being left home, lightning, etc).

My pup may be coming next weekend and he will be coming by air. I have faith things will go just fine esp. since the temps should be perfect.

Are you thinking of getting another pup? :)
yep We re in touch with 2 breeders. One shipped that other will not. The second breeder wants us to come get the pup. Its just about a 4 hr drive. She told me she has to meet the new owners. I feel it seems like so much stress for a baby.
Nigel came by plane from Buffalo, NY to Los Angeles. I don't think the plane fight has anything to do with his mental state. He is just a knucklehead.
Well that's exciting! An OES or another breed? When is this doggie coming? Pics????!!
Well if we go to pick it up it will be in Feb. they were born 11/18. My lucky # is 18
If the other is shipped they are not do for 45 days.
We had a pup come to our nearest airport ,and she was fine.I ,stupidly, hadnt looked into the details at all,the breeder just said the pup arrives at your airport 2pm or whatever.Since then,I have found out, firstly, dogs have to be booked in 90 minutes before the flight. Then, this plane went from Victoria,2 states away,to Sydney NSW,one state away, then there was an hour between planes, then the next plane went to our capital city Brisbane, then 2 hours wait, then to the local airport.Had I know,I would never have put a pup through this. She was about 12 or 13 weeks old.Mind you,she was fine, happy, clean, when we collected her so maybe it didnt bother her.
George came by plane to Louisiana from South Carolina, and he was fine. Of course, nothing really seemed to upset him, so I think it just depends on the pup's personality. Good luck!
Finn put on his wings and came here.....he did fine!
(I normally wouldn't want to but, the airline was awesome)

Rescue wise I do not ship dogs that is my own personal
preference.
I have done it twice with a dog going to Bermuda....no other
way to get her there.
Then, with Baxter whose new owner flew here to get him and
go back with him!

All cases have turned out fine so, maybe I should reconsider :?
It always sounds terrifying to me... may be because I hate flying? I'm sure it's not nearly so scary for a pup then for a fully grown dog, because they're used to things changing constantly at that age. A few of my parent's rescue dogs have been flown out to them and I always worry so much about having to go through that after whatever traumas they've already suffered

By the way, I was so scared by the idea that I opted to drive 12 hours each way to pick up Bally rather than fly him out  I'm sure it doesn't bother them much though
My Luna came by plane and I think she was a little shaken up. I can only imagine how it must feel to leave everything you know to meet strangers. But Luna did quite well and I attribute that the way her travel was handled. My breeder had the mother sleep with a bunch of blankets, so when it came time for the pups to leave, each one had a blanket that smelled like their mother. They were also given a toy that was in the litter pen. I still have that blanket and Luna still sleeps with it.

I also sent a toy and a blanket to my breeder 2 weeks before Luna was to fly out here. That way, even though she didn't know Jim or me, at least she had a scent she could relate to us and we wouldn't seem so "strange" to her when we met her at the airport.

I think it is always going to be a little stressful for pups, but they are pretty resilant (sp?) and can bounce back quickly.
duffy came by air and i was so nervous for him but when i let him out he was in great shape not barking or anyting.. hoping his brother in 2 weeks will be fine too.. the breeder gets them use to the crate first so if the pup is not use to the crate it might be problems .. more worried about the weather even to fla
I'd only do it if I was dealing with an experienced, reputable breeder.
both mine flew to me, and both dan's dogs were pick ups.

the irish setter was traumatized by leaving his family and has severe seperation anxiety (pick up)

Marley came out of the crate bouncing and loving me - clean and dry and happy. (ship from CHicago to NY - oh and her plane got delayed due to bad weather)

Morgan came out of the crate yelping woth a pain in his hip (he has chd) and filthy - he also came with coccidia (Michigan to NY)

Beowulf came by car and is - well a newfie they are very laid back

I will probably drive out to pick up my next pup if the weather and time allows but only because I love car trips. For a four hour drive I wouldn't consider paying to ship but that's me. However, I wouldn't hesitate to ship from an experienced breeder.
Brie and her brother flew in from NZ at 12 weeks of age, not a problem the two shared a large crate and were fine. The only problem we had was the Cargo guys wanted to keep the two fuzz balls, they had them wrapped around their paws on arrival in OZ. The guys even fussed and insisted on loading the shipping crate into the car and final goodbyes to them, I thought I would never get out of there, funny seeing grown he-men ooohing and baby talking to two puppers

Two of her babies flew interstate, one to tasmania (Over the sea) it was a choice between the owner driving then going onto a car ferry overnight with a new pup & new owner then going into a kennel on the ship for the return journey as opposed to a 3/4hour flight to Tassie. The other boy it would of been an 8 hour drive over for the new owners then a return drive home probably longer then 8 hours with a new puppy and potty stops etc. His flight was just on 2 hours delayed due to bad weather, he arrived all happy and no accidents in the crate same with the possum that went to tassie.. Both also had stuffies to travel with, with the litter and mommas smells on it, neither were stressed at all, plus the security of no one but the nominated person can collect them from cargo and they have to take ID before they release them from the airport, so not just anyone can take off with a puppy in a crate on landing.

Here I use a pet travel agent and the dogs are looked after in every way from the start of their journey till their final destination. The two boys that went overseas not a problem both arrived happy, bouncy and in good condition and well catered for by agents in every country they had a stop over in. Plus high security so they don't go missing. Brian passed through 3 countries and each stop over there was an agent waiting his arrival, he was pottied, fed, walked and checked at each stop and after 36 hours plus of travelling arrived all bouncy,in his customised crate all spotless and not stressed at all.

He was my biggest worry because of the distant but the pet agent said they do well when younger then shipping an older dog. He was not stressed and bounced out of the crate into tove and ann e's arms.

Worth paying that little more for better service and experience with a certified experienced pet shipping agent, they are well catered for and extremely well looked after wether just locally flying them or elsewhere in the world.

I look at it this way, long car journey locally vs a quick flight  Less stressfull for the little babies then an 8 hour plus drive into the unknown.

I also condition them to the crates before they go so they are use to going into the crate. I suppose the otherside is, Temperament, if they are relaxed in nature then it does not worry them at all flying
Bella was shipped to me. She did not have a long flight...San Franciso to San Diego. When I arrived at the terminal I could her her crying loudly. I immediately took her out of her crate and she nestled in my shoulder. She was wet and smelly but calmed down as soon as I held her. We had a 5 hour drive home, we made frequent stops and by the time we were home she seemed to have forgotten the flight. It scared me, too, having her shipped. But she has had no residual problems from that and is a happy, well adjusted pup!
We had Bella shipped from Kansas City to Denver at 3.5 months. She was fine and had no roblems in the crate. There was lots of paper and stuff in the crate for her. I took her out and she went potty then put her back in for the trip home. Wo, that seems so lon ago and she has changed so much but its only just over 20 months.
If the drive were less than eight hours each way we would have gone that route. Our two boys (Portage and Theeps) were six hours away and we made that trip twice. Once to meet them and once to pick them up. I'd have done that again.

We got Hudson from a breeder twenty one hours away (each way). That made it impossible, so he was shipped.

The breeder insisted on keeping him until he was ten weeks old, and I thought that was a great idea, due to the stress of the flight.

I won't lie to you, he was pretty scared when we picked him up. I opened the kennel door and he didn't want to come out. His blankets were soaked. I leaned in and pulled him out, put him in my arms and talked to him very quietly. He was shaking.

I took him to some grass and he laid down. I thought he was broken. I kept him in my arms on the ride home. After about three minutes he put his paws around my neck and licked my face. He watched out the windows and his bum started wagging. I knew he was over the trauma. When we arrived home he met his new big brother and "made strange" for about twelve seconds. Then his bum wagged again and they started rolling around on the floor.

So, yes, it was scary for him, and I'd have avoided it if I could have, but he recovered quickly and I don't think there's any long term issues. He recovered on the way home from the airport.

I would advise that you not only work out the details with the breeder but you also follow up directly with the airline. When we went to pick up Hudson we went to the airport where the breeder said he'd be, only to find out that they bring animals to a separate depot that was ten minutes away. It wasn't a major issue, but during such a highly emotional time it would have been nice to know in advance.
Tangham (first oes ever) was flown from TX to PA. He was afraid of men in uniforms carrying clipboards. I know this sounds strange, but my mom thought maybe the crew or people where he was kept until flight were teasing him or banging on the crate. Dont know but ever since then I would never fly a dog.
So any update on what you decided to do? Any names or breed?

thats such a good idea! we did the same thing right before our daughter was born. We slept with several of her blankets and that way when we put her in her crib she would be ok. I think it helped! I'll have to remember to do this with our pup.
