Panda is retching - Help!

For the past month, Panda has been retching...argggg (usually 3 times in a row) but no vomiting. Thinking he may have eaten something he wasn't supposed to. I had him in for x-rays the previous week but nothing unusual was found. He did have a reoccuring ear infection so was sedated and his ears were flushed but doesn't seem to be related to the retching perhaps? No blood work done as he had this done in Aug.

My vague memory tells me retching could be heart problems if I remember correctly? Or am I wrong about this?

He seems to desperately try to get something out of his throat - thus the retching and I'm at a loss as to what it could be. Help or advice needed please and thanks in advance.

Seems strange that this has been going on for a whole month. What did the vet say about the symptoms? Where did they xray? Just the stomach or the esophagus too? Sometimes retching could indicate kennel cough but usually it won't last a whole month. I think I would take him back to the vet or take him somewhere else for second opinion.

I'm sorry to hear that he's not feeling well.

Years ago my aunt's golden retriever was doing the same, the vets had that poor dog on iv's and medicine, etc etc. Her retching was unbearable. After she died it was found she had a stick in her throat sideways - it was totally overlooked. My aunt and uncle did not pay the vet one cent, they were so upset. Check her throat again, it could be as simple as something stuck in her throat.

Please keep us apprised on her condition -
years and years ago one of my yorkies kept retching. On closer inspection she had a long clump of hair caught on her back teeth and trailing in the back of her throat. Hope panda gets sorted...
Hugs to Panda, hope you find the cause
I would definitely go back to the vet or get a second opinion. I'm trained to take and read Xrays and lots of things wont show up on Xray. Stuff like sticks and hair.
Having said that my dalmation does the same thing but usually in the half hour or so after he's eaten dry kibble and I've always attributed it to the little gritty bits getting stuck on his tonsils or something. But as he's done it most of his life its not a concern.
Good luck!!
Another possibility is having a scope of the UGI tract. When Ben had issues with vomiting, that was offered to us as an option instead of surgery - which he needed and had anyway.

If it is not an ostruction, what about reflux?
It's probably just worms... hopefully just roundworms. I'd deworm him with strongid regardless of whether a fecal is positive or not.
When you say "retching", does that mean something like coughing or dry-heaves? Trying to vomit but nothing is coming up?

I ask because for about a year now, Winston has made what we call his "old man noise". He's not hacking or trying to get anything up, he just does this (how to type....?) "waaaaaaaaach" once or twice a day. We literally just attribute it to age and have never thought much about it....but now your post makes me think - UGH, what if I am disregarding something that should be attended to?!
I am sorry can't add anything - but I wanted to send Panda a hug. :ghug:
Please let us know what you find.
Thanks to all for the advice and well wishes.

After reading your post I've decided to err on the side of caution and book another vet appointment. The vet clinic I've been using for the past 18 years is superb. However, they recently hired a new guy and as much as he seemed okay I had more confidence with the 3 other vets I usually use. I'm going to state my preference next time. I'm not sure where he x-rayed Panda boy, as I was at that time more concerned with how he was doing regarding his ear infection. Wish I had asked more questions.

My gut feeling tells me perhaps something is stuck in his throat as I had boxes of stuff in prep for moving stored in my computer room. I once gave Panda a juicy marrow bone to chew at his leisure (without Merlin or pup trying to take it away and closed the door). Without Merlin to supervise, Panda ended up opening all boxes and spewing the contents all over the floor. I wonder if he happened to chew something?

Thanks again for all your well wishes and advice
