The Story of Stuff

I was forced to watch this video by my husband, but found it enlightening and interesting: The Story of Stuff. It's a 20 minute look at the process and costs of our consumer culture. Seems particularly appropriate with the holiday gift-buying season upon us.

The video really hit home for us due to our recent home purchase. We have hauled off at least 5 tons of trash, and have more to go. The previous owners were horders who also bought storage unit stuff-sales. Somehow digging through mountains of other people's clothes, appliances, collectibles, decorations, toys, and basically everything else you can think of really made us think about the stuff that shuffles through our home too. The fact that these mountains of trash had been in the rain for a couple years didn't help, but little of it was of a durable quality to begin with.

Colin Beavan has a good article in Yes! magazine related to his experience of a stuff-free holiday season.
