I'm going to Florida

I just got confirmation(I requested last month) today that I have from Dec 26-Jan 4 off. Ten blessed days off.

So I decided to go to Florida. Its not a whim. My Mom and Sister live in Florida. I checked the prices for flights and OMG they are expensive. One person round trip is over $500 8O .

The other part is, do I take my dh along. I'm not sure weather he wants to go or weather I just want to leave him home. I haven't asked him....yet.

I called my sister(same one who's son got married last month) and asked if she wanted company. She's excited. My mom lives with my sister since she can't/won't take care of herself. I haven't seen my mom in FIVE years.

My sister said this is a good time to come because my mom's health is getting worse. She's in a wheelchair since she broke her hip earlier this year because she won't walk(she's scared of falling again). She has her days and nights mixed up and she's having TIA's(small stroke). My sister thinks that in the not too long future she won't even recognize us. So going now would be ideal since she still knows who "I" am.

So now how the heck do I get to Florida??? Should I fly, which would take me all of 4 and1/2 hrs or do I drive(since gas prices are down) which takes the better part of 2 days. Hmmmmm

DRIVE!!!!!!
Fun stuff!
Enjoy your vacation!
:) :) :) :)
How about both?

Drive 100 miles to Midway and take Southwest: For the days you posted, for example the lowest round trip fare I find is $344 to Orlando, although I don't know which city in Florida is best for you.

You may be able to find better fares if you can be more flexible on the exact dates of travel: try using their Low Fare Finder
http://www.southwest.com/cgi-bin/lowFareFinder

As an example, if you could get away and return on the 28th/6th it drops to as low as $227 round trip. It's a great tool for finding fares if Southwest can work for you.

Since you're near Chicago, I think Jet Blue is there too? I've never flown Jet Blue but I've GENERALLY heard great things.

Good luck!
Spirit also flies out of O'Hare and it's usually one of the cheapest. What part of Florida are you going to?
Yes, airfares are very expensive. Airlines are trying to make up for the incredibly high fuel prices this past summer. It will take a while for fares to come down. If you are not particular about your exact schedule (you pick the day, but not the times, they let you know what you've got after you pay) I would try both hotwire.com and priceline.com and I would also check travelocity.com, expedia.com and orbitz.com. Carriers sometimes "dump" excess seats at a good price through these channels. If you are a night bird check the individual airline sites just after midnight. This is when new fares and availability are loaded into the carrier systems. Sometimes you can find a great fare that only has a few seats available and by the time you check at 6a or 7a they are gone. ALWAYS pay for your ticket with a credit card (you will receive a refund from the cc company if the carrier suddenly stops flying). Be persistent and you should be able to find a non bank breaking fare! Good luck!

I'm going to the Tampa airport.

I checked Cheapflights.com. They have a listed price of $192..great. Hit book flight and it takes you back to another search engine and it doesn't have the price of $192, always higher.

What am I doing wrong???
hello it says in FAQ's they don't actually book tickets, you need to ring the airline that has the flight.

Why can’t I find a deal listed on your site?

Our Best Deals listings are not an availability search but a comparison of the best advertised prices. In order to book one of the fares on the Best Deals page, select the Web site of the airline or agent you wish to book with. Please be aware that the top deals sell out quickly and the flight that you've seen advertised at a certain price may have sold out before you have a chance to book a seat. We do our best to keep the deals correct and up to the minute, but sometimes seats sell so quickly that we cannot keep up. However, if you believe that one of the deals listed is simply inaccurate or unavailable, please let us know. We don't want any mistakes on the site and any feedback you have helps us stay as accurate as possible. If you are looking for specific dates, we recommend our Book Flights Online page, were you can compare up to 6 search engines for your dates.

have fun in Tampa!
Hope you have a great time :D
stop by cocoa i am near orlando
southwest usually has great fares to tampa and they don't show up on the search engines you have to check thew airline site itself.

I would say fly (you can hit storms on the way) and go by yourself. I always leave my husband home when I vist family in florida - too many dynamics going on especially if yuo haven't seen your mother in five years and her health isn't good. mother daughter dynamics are tricky enough.
If going alone, fly. If taking hubby, drive. (But who will watch Simon and Gar if you both go)? I'm glad you'll be able to see your mom. I'm realizing how precious and few years I have left with mine...... Also, check out flights from Rockford. I know they fly to Orlando, don't know about Tampa.

actually when I drove I took the dogs
I did ask my sister if we drive, could I could bring both dogs. At first she was hesitant but then she asked a bunch of questions ie are they rambunctious(sometimes), do they get along with other dogs(we go to the dogpark all the time). I didn't tell her that Garfunkel counter surfs or that Simon thinks he's a lap dog.

Did talk to dh and we decided that I would go by myself. I'm going to fly...if I ever find a flight that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

This is the first time in 15yrs that I'm taking a long trip by myself. It feels a little weird but I know I'm GOING TO HAVE FUNNNNN!!!!
