Dog sledding

So - who besides dawn  - has sledded with their dogs?

okay dawn you can join in now :o : any advice on sleds and wher eot buy them? anyone interested in participating in a dog sledding trip? some of the places in NH and MInnesota have trips and some of them you can bring (up to one - sorry Kristine) a dog with you. I was wondering if we wanted to try to get a group together to do a bunch of OES (or at least OES people)

One dog??? One? What good is one???

Could be interesting, though I have to say I'm only considering sledding in self-defense. Figure it will wear out the youngsters in wintertime and I'm less at risk of running into a tree than, say, when I'm trying to stay upright on skis behind them.

Let see what the resident sledding person has to say once her brain returns. She's purportedly pre-occupied editing the basset rescue newsletter.

Kristine
Still braindead, but done with the editing. :D

I have found that the group "tours" or "experiences" tend to be quite expensive. Not that they are bad, they just are all inclusives and not cheap. And I agree with Kristine - 1 dog?? what good is that. The more the merrier.

I personally know someone who does them. The same one where we just went to ND for our carting weekend. (OK< that is bad sentence structure, too tired to figure out how to fix it though).

Too bad we live so far apart. (Kerry). I'm sure we could put something together if people wanted to learn. Linda and I have done pretty darn good with our 2 young dogs! Too bad the sport is in the winter, when it is so hard to travel in our part of the world!

I don't have my own sled - and I covet Linda and Donaven's awesome, handmade one. It is very nice. Beautiful too. I have searched for sleds - on ebay and other sites. All I have found are old ones damaged beyond repair and little kick sleds that Donaven calls "death traps".
Doesn't help I just finished watching the Discovery Channel's Iditarod series - I am hyped!
We hope to get out carting at least 1 day this weekend - if Linda and Donaven get healthy enough. They both have the crud and are on ABX.
My "new" 3 wheeled cart is at their house still. OH, and did I mention that I haven't told Todd yet that I bought it??

Oh, bah humbug! I think the sleds I've been looking at (there are a couple in decent shape in the TW/St Paul craig's list) are more along those lines. Pictures of minimally acceptable sleds, please!

If there is ever enough interest, maybe we can put something together somewhat centrally to the Midwest/North East where the greatest interest seems to be at the moment - say maybe Michigan? or we can all trek up to Dawn's and have a joint herding/sledding seminar. Hm!

Kristine
Here are the bad sleds -

(not to pick on Black Ice at all - they are great and I order from them!!!)
This is the sled style I usually see on ebay, etc.

The sled style is not near as nice as this one -
http://www.blackicedogsledding.com/page17.html
Not horribly expensive either. :D

As for the trekking - I would vote for here. :D
Closer for me, but we have the land and stuff. The lake behind us is always an option and not so dependant on volume of show.
Of course there are the sheep too.....

And where did you see the sleds on Craigslist? - I haven't seen any!
here is one on ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/FRANK-HALL-CUSTOM-W ... 240%3A1318

It is in Indiana, pickup only (no shipping).
The runners are metal, most are now fiberglass or a similar prodult. No rust and lots lighter weight.
okay what I have been told about sleds is to get a hand tied (vs bolted) one. Is the kicksled a death trap if you like are "running" Morgan? I suspect it will be a very sedate ride

Honestly if it weren't for the fact that I had to buy christmas presents for my grown kids I would buy the $400 one on sled dog central. I still might.
and dawn - about not telling todd - dan has no idea I bought the scooter and the sled will be a surprise as well:)

Last year he came in and asked did I forget to give someone a Christmas present - he found my cross country skis 8O
Yes, the tied is better than bolted. I think that a combination would be OK too. They really need to flex and shift going over terrain, so as long as they are not all rigidly bolted, you would be OK.
When I watched the Iditarod show, there was a huge variety in materials and sled construction - try and catch the episodes on reruns if you can!

The kick sleds aren't as easy sliding as the others, so they are harder on the dog(s) pulling them. Going faster is the dangerous to humans part - they are top heavy and not as well balanced.

well is there interest in a March or so sledding get together? either a michigan/dawn one or trying a group "tour"? I need to plan
We seem to be a group of 3 - any more takers???

I need to plan too. March is an unpredictable time weather-wise here.
I don't know what the best idea would be. I guess it depends on what we want to accomplish.
my dog has gone sledding with me but it was down a hill and he jumped off but I'm sure he can do it because he is so looking for a job. moon ray and Debbie are in just let me no where and when so i can plan at work sounds like a blast. I do make him pull fire wood home does that count
I am so glad to see more people getting interested. we need to plan a winter sheepie get together somewhere with snow !!! and I need to figure out how to get there witht he dogs since my husband still is not very happy about st louis last year .......

:twitch: :twitch: Oh I so WANT to be a part of that group.
But money is of an issue so my chances are slim to none.

Unless I trade lodging and food to all of you for driving to my neck of the woods. February can be pretty snowy here. And I will even welcome people with more than one dog (especially if one of those dogs is named Sybil). Tim wouldn't probably notice that I have people with funny accents and wild dogs living in my house.

Tell him to get over it since you are coming back to St. Louis in 2009
we'll we will see about 2009 - money is an issue everywhere I think these days. definitly in 2010 though- that new facility looks amazing!!!

And don't think I didn't notice you trying to steal away Sybil's affections.

Actually NY is pretty snowy after January and both Dawn and Kristine have family they can make happy by visiting at the same time. you can come stay with us Judi.

:D :D :D
Here are a couple sled pictures.
:D

The sled I covet.....

The dogs are drinking a high fat energy drink after their run.

The sled is combo of bolted and tied. I had to look at the picture - we haven't enough snow to get the sled out this year yet.

The black plasticy stuff between the runners is great - it keeps the snow from building up and bogging down. It also is slick, so it glides better.
great pictures Dawn. I want to come back as one of your dogs :D :D
