Neutering and dew claws

Hi everyone :)

Bally's early Christmas present is to be neutered in December 8O Anyway, my vet suggested that I have his dew claws taken off seeing as how he'll already be under the anesthetics.

Has anyone else had their pups dew claws off? How necessary do you feel it is? Just wondering about your thoughts on this as none of my other dogs have ever had it done. I heard that it can be a bigger problem if your dog loves to dig- if that's the case, then I'm signing up for it right now!

I would take them off, if you are having anesthesia anyway.

Our rat terrier (a bigger guy - 25 pounds) just had an incident last Saturday with his.
We were in flyball class and he started yelping after a run of the hurdles. I ran over and checked him, and he somehow had gotten his left dew claw caught in the tag ring of his collar. 8O Everyone was amazed.
We take dew claws off when we have tails done on the young pups. I'd have them taken off if he's going to be put under anyway.
My guys were done when they were docked. a friend got a puppy from the same breeder as Morgan and for some reason they had been left on (overlooked?). She had them removed herself.

We had a Pyr who had them and we also had some incidences with them. Face it - one less set of nails to trim tooo!!!
We just had dewclaws removed on a one year old rescue while he was being castrated. Vet didn't want to leave them on and risk having them ripped in play. He's a very active dog. Like Marilyn said, normally in this breed they would have been removed at birth.

It is a bigger procedure to do so later in life. His scrotum has healed just fine but she said he's still bothering the one leg where the dewclaw used to be and managed to remove the stitches at least once, so if you have it done be vigilant. It still beats having to have them removed after an accident.

Jackson did not have hers removed, the vet up here told us there was really no reason to (we also opted to keep her full tail - she is 'au naturel' ). Oddly enough, she only has one ldew claw eft. I have never noticed any wound or soreness where the other claw used to be, but when trimming her nails the other day saw that it was gone. Weird. The vet stated that she may have pulled it out playing and did not even notice.
I would definitely have them removed, more often than not they do cause problems.
While he has the snip have them removed, leaving them causes more problems then is necessary. Ripped Dew claws, yes they can get caught on things like fences etc, my sisters blue heeler had that happen and very painfull so she had the rest off, grooming him and they get in the way being a long coated breed, forgetting to trim them and they can grow into the side of the leg. Even though mine are not docked within 24 hours the dew claws were done.

I'm surprised Bally has not been done already. Also look at neutering if he is over 12 months of age, better for them then.

There has been a lot of discussion about de-sexing and when might be a better time to do it for their benefit, google it above and have a read of the discussions on Large Breeds and de-sexing.
Thanks for all the advice! I will definitely have them taken off then. I would hate for him to have an accident later on down the track 8O

In regards to his age and desexing, I've decided that there's enough information out there for me to feel OK about doing it now (all of our other large dogs have been 6 months too), but the main reason is that I am lucky enough to have a rare, extended holiday at the moment so I can keep an eye on the lad while he's healing. Trust me, he will be getting himself into a lot of mischief!
Well, Bally had both of his operations today. He's only a little dopey now because he was one of the first patients of the day and had plenty of time to wake up. I am really dreading keeping him calm! I've given him a massive beef marrowbone and it seems to be keeping him busy and reasonably still for the moment  but once the drugs wear off.... 8O

The poor little boy can't walk properly either, he's so off balance from having his paws bandaged. I have to keep them clean for 3 days. Bally and clean don't go together all too well
Poor Bally, I hope he is better behaved than Tiggy was after she was desexed.

I ended up having to get tablets from the vet to help keep her quiet. I forget what they were called.
She's such a jumper. After she jumped up on her back legs and chest-butted the pantry door to let me know she was hungry, jumped over the back of the couch and wrestled with her mate Rastus, all on day 2 with a belly full of stitches I decided enough was enough.
The medication was good. She wasnt dopey just a bit quieter than usual.

Mmmmmm maybe I need some more of those
our old oes was spayed after her first season. We had such trouble keeping her still. Her wound kept filling with fluid, it was a nightmare. Summer has just finished her second season she was so good. Apart from the spots on the floor and the "rub my butt someone I got this peculiar itch" she was fine. I will have her spayed but there is lots of time. Both my dogs have dew claws you do have to watch them!
Hope Bally is on the mend after his ops.
good to hear Bally is on the mend! :)
We're taking the little boy to have his bandages changed tomorrow  I knew he wouldn't manage to stay clean for more than a day! Plus it rained today lol

I'm a little worried that he may have pulled out a stitch on one paw, so at least I can have him all checked out while we're there. We're moving into a new home on Saturday, so keeping an eye on him while packing, cleaning, etc. is nearly impossible
