velcro vs anxious

I have recently noticed the use of the term velcro dog on the shy k9 list. it is not menat to be a good thing and it made me wonder if sheepies may in fact be somewhat clingish or maybe anxious?

I know most of us on the forum are relatively new to the breed. what I do know is:
1) this breed went through a very aggressive period
2) some other countries consider OES to be aggressive dogs still
3) most US OES are "clingy", and many of them are very soft dogs
4) we see quite a few on the forum with seperation issues
5) i see mountains where there are mole hills

Okay ignoring number 5, is something going on?

Semantics? I think there are a lot of very misused words by dog owners. though I think the word "aggression" has to be the worst.

It's funny because most of the time, I see molehills where people seem to think they have mountains.
What dog doesn't want to be with her family? They are social animals. I would be worried more if my dog wasn't wondering what I am up to.
^^^ there are degrees though and even social animals should be able to go off on their own shouldn't they?

yah not saying that. just saying perhaps there is some overreaction towards this "velcro" dog thing. There is a difference between this and separation anxiety. Tell me of any dog not just oes that doesn't follow someone into the next room you could be doing something fun! with food too!! my cats follow me around too. maybe I am going by my experience and I call it more curiosity than nervousness that I am gone. If I am not home she doesn't freak out.
I don't think it's anxiety but more of the way Americans view our pets, therefore the way we treat them, and then it affects the way they respond to us.
The short version, they are a member of our family and we treat them as such. They respond by being very involved with us and we love it.
It's sad but many dogs have it better than a lot of children.
There is a BIG difference between a velcro dog and an anxious one
Dutch is a velcro one and follows me place to place in the house or outside but if I go out she is quite content to stay with hubby until I get back, now Shadow my GSD had severe seperation anxiety, she also was glued to my side but Hubby said when I left the house she would continually pace without stopping untill I got back home and no matter what I did or who was there her eyes never left me, fi I went into the yard without her she would hurl herself at the patio door trying to be with me. It was very sad to see.
I read in a OES book that they tend to have OCD. Now I am a mental health social worker and I thought....OCD, what other term could that mean.

After getting to know my dog more I guess OCD is a term that does mean OCD "tendencies." I have 10 dogs and of them all my OES and Rottie mix ALWAYS follow me when ever I leave the room or go somewhere else. I guess that is...perhaps....a little anxious?
My Aussies are more "velcro" then Violet my OES. I can't move anywhere in the house without one of the Aussies showing up and preferring to lay right next to me. Violet, on the other hand, lays around with us or lays in another part of the house.

When it is time for me to leave the house, all three get excited because I usually take them with me....so they line up at the door to the garage. When I can't take them with me, I tell each one, individually , that they can't come and must stay. They seem to understand and don't reach that level of excitement that they do when they are going with me. They usually stand and watch me go out the door.

Maybe the Velcro thing is a herding dog thing. I also feel that the dogs wanted to put their mouths around you hand to get you to go somewhere with them or do something, people interpet that as biting and being mean. Asia, my 18 month old Aussie will take my hand in her mouth when she wants me to come somewhere or do something for her. She also likes to sit in the front seat of the van and put her paw in my hand while I drive....she is so funny. Asia is very demonstritive with her mouth and her paws. On the other hand, if Violet wants me to do something, she prefers to "head but". lol
