Treated poorly by the director of ATTS (just a vent)

I sent the following e-mail to the chief tester of the American Temperament Testing Society detailing a conversation (if you could call it that) with the director of ATTS about my recently received certificate from Harry's test. My name was misspelled on the certificate and I just wanted their records corrected and a new certificate issued.

I wrote to you several weeks ago praising the judge of my temperament test as you can see from the e-mail below. On Wednesday I received in the mail my certificate from my test. To my disappointment my certificate had my name spelled wrong. The certificate had my name spelled Judeth instead of Judith I left a message on Thursday morning asking them to correct the certificate and ship me a new one. Today I decided to contact the offices to see if they had received my message.

I have just hung up from a lady named Sally that was completely rude to me. I explained that I called the other day and wanted to know if she had got my message. She responded that she doesn’t always get her messages. Her response after I explained I was calling regarding my name spelled wrong was “Let’s see if the mistake was mine or yours”. Then she wanted to know which test I took. After some short clipped questions on her part to determine the ATTS office test # and then my test # that day, she looked at my test copy and said “Well your I looks like a Z, I mean an E”. My response to that since she corrected herself on what my I’s looked like was
"Well, you got all the I’s correct in Cunningham, Harrington and Old English Sheepdog". Her response to that was “Cunningham is a common name” to which I asked "Judith is not?" She did not answer that. She then went on to say that people’s handwriting is terrible and she has a hard time, she even goes so far to do reverse look up on telephone numbers to see how people spell their names. I could see that she was not willing to reissue a new certificate and if necessary it would be at my expense since she was looking to place blame for the error. When I kept trying to ask “How much it would cost me to have a new certificate reissued?” she would not answer but kept saying “I wasn’t letting her get a word in edgewise” as she was trying to build her case against me. I only lost my temper with her when she refused to answer my questions. Then she called me rude. At which point I got very angry and said she was rude and again asked how much it would cost me to get a new certificate. I also told her she should apologize to me for the way she was handling this and her response was that she “was not sorry”. She finally responded that it would be $10 and promptly hung up on me.

I called her back and told her I would be issuing a complaint. She told me to “go right ahead”. I would like to make it clear that she was very abrupt from the minute that the phone call began. I also think it is bad policy to start any conversation with “Let’s see if the mistake was mine or yours”. I am just absolutely in a state of shock that this whole thing was handled this way especially in light of how you and Carl have conducted yourselves with this organization.

I would like to request a new certificate be sent out at no cost to me. If you would like a copy of my test to see how confusing my handwriting is I would be glad to send or fax it to you. I am hopeful that you will resolve this in a way that will not be a poor reflection of your organization.

Thanks so much for your consideration in this matter. I am still very upset over how I was treated.

Thanks for letting me vent. I still cannot believe that lady even took that attitude. It sort of ruins the excitement of Harry actually passing the test.

DON'T ...I repeat....DON'T ALLOW this to ruin the happiness and excitement for you and Harry passing this test!!!!

(I am so glad you stepped up and defended yourself!!!)

HOORAY!!! FOR YOU!!!!!!
I truly hate people that won't accept responsibility for their actions. In the whole scheme of things, this wasn't even something that major but she made it into something huge because of her "not my fault" attitude.

And doesn't anyone teach their employees that "the customer is always right" anymore?? Geesh!!

Well that is sort of what I was wondering?
THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT!!!!

Are you kidding me? We are "old school" and that is what I have been taught, and what I teach my kids. Unfortunately, our society has no clue what morals or good manners are. I think every incident like this should be reported. If we let them continue to get away with this behavior it will never get better. Good for you Judi for not giving up!!
Try this...imagine what a sad little life this person leads that every fiber of her being is wound up in winning something so ridiculous as who's spelling error caused a misprint of something that takes literally 30 seconds to fix and reprint.

Aren't you thankful that you're not as miserable as her? See, you can just  at her and never allow someone so full of ire any control over your emotions. :D
Ugh that makes me mad. I hope you (they, actually) get it sorted. What makes it even more annoying is I would really love her job!! I would certainly do it much better than her too 8)
I'm in a customer-service oriented industry... no matter whose fault it is, you always have to try to make the customer happy - period. Sometimes it includes biting your tongue... I know I've had to do that.

No one should act that way. Rudeness is hard to excuse - ever... Sorry it happened to you!

And Congrats anyhow!!
What a miserable jerk. I really don't get someone in customer service making excuses. Especially in this case, it would take all of 5 seconds to say "Oh, sure, we'll send another one out."

You know what the best part is though? An entire package of high quality certificate paper costs about $10 but when you add up all the time and man hours it is going to take to resolve this one rude person's issue, it'll wind up costing them 10 times that.

Sorry Judz.

sort of went the way of the teacher always being right don't you think? its all about me is apparently not reserved for the very young or very old these days (okay I am guilty of trying to usurp that approach from time to time these days - just ask my kids
Well this woman falls into the crabby old bag department!

She sounded older than me and I am old!

I wish I had thought to say to her about the time spent debating it could have been spent fixing it.

Ditto! I am sorry you had to deal with this. I am proud of you for defending yourself!!!!!
poor juty, dont let it ruin your day!
I hate it when phone calls go south like that.

Just today I had to ask someone if their branch office was independent or "owned by the corporation" (a poor choice of words on my part). She replied that they weren't a corporation. I was absolutely stunned by this, as they are a HUGE company.

I stammered: "You're not a corporation? Are you a partnership or a sole owner"?

She replied: "XYZ corp. is not a corporation, it's a private company."

I actually burst out chuckling as I said: "Ma'am, 'corp.' stands for corporation, corporations can be privately held"

She said: "You can laugh all you want but we're not a corporation"

Later in the conversation she gave me the name I was looking for and said: "He's the CEO"

Again I chuckled: "A CEO is an officer of a corporation, it stands for Chief Executive Officer"

She wasn't amused.

I am fairly certain that an organization is not allowed to used the title "Corp." or "Inc." or "corporation" unless they are actually incorporated, but I could be wrong. So I went to Florida's sunbiz.org site and searched, and sure enough they are a corporation.

LOL. Now that's funny.
These people.....maybe they are the parents of the teenage girls who blew up in their car when they lit a cigarette after huffing aerosols???!!

That kind of intelligence has to come from somewhere.....
I just got a call from the President of the ATTS. They will be sending out another certificate at no charge. 8)
Yippee!! Renews my faith, at least a little bit!
Judi, sorry that this person soured your wonderful experience. I am glad you had a good conclusion and I'm sure she will get in trouble!

I wonder with our recession, if the extinct ideology called "customer service" will appear again? I am amazed at the lack of customer service these days in any industry.
