Another set back

I can't believe what's just happened, I'm shaking, panicking & a nervous wreak, I just have to vent.

To cut a long and boring story short I have been out of work due to illness for a year now, previous to that I had to cut my hours right down for 18 months and just when I thought I was picking myself up I was diagnosed with another autoimmune disorder. The last few months have been a struggle healthwise but I have continued to look for full time work when I can. I've applied for lots of jobs, up to 9 a week, but have only had one interview which I felt good about, but they said they had interviewed over 40 people- and I didn't get the job.
In the last month all my debtors have decided to call in the debts, apart from my bank who I have a large overdraft with.

I was OK with all this, being brave and thinking I have just about enough income to cover everything once I had made the arrears payments which totalled £1000. I have an income of £4000 a year at the moment so it wasn't easy trying to get that together. I had to beg and borrow and it's been totally heartbreaking, I have never had to do this before. So once all that was over, I spent a few days going through all my accounts very carefully, called all the companies and arranged monthly payments where I could. Fine. Horrible, but fine. I had worked out I had £5 left over a month. Better than nothing.

Today I received a letter to say my credit card debt has been passed onto a collection agency. I had planned to pay off the remainder £50 a month for a year which would clear the account. I called them and I now have until midnight Friday to pay it ALL (£600). I am so distraught. I thought everything was going to be OK, that I had sorted it all out, then this just happened.
I feel utterly deflated. I was coping so well, now I feel like I can't go on anymore.
I guess I just need to hear "This too shall pass" but I can't see a way out.

I'm sorry :(

Can you find someone to offer legal help? Sounds like you need some.

There is a saying, you can't get blood out of a stone. So unless you are worried about losing your home I would simply tell the credit card companies they can get their money on your schedule or nto at all. Collection agencies like to play the bully.
I'm worried about losing my home, it's been on the market for nearly a year, we want to rent really, but are heading toward negative equity :(
Can you consult an attorney about how to best protect your assests?
Geesh, no wonder you need to vent. After doing all that work, this comes flying at you. Collection agencies are usually willing to negotiate. It's certainly worth trying.

I also found a website that had some links that may help http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/ManagingDebt/DebtsAndArrears/DG_10034289

Good Luck,
Jennifer, Baxter, Cassiopia and Abby
That's terrible. I hope things work themselves out by the end of the day. I have my fingers crossed for ya.
Cassie, you're in my thoughts and prayers. I truly hope something loosens up for you soon. :ghug:
Oh, I'm so sorry. I hate money worries :(

Credit card companies are the worst. I had this problem once many years ago and I called everyone I owed money to and explained and everyone understood and were willing to work with me except credit card companies.

Scare tactic is telling you they are sending it to a collection agency. They will....but since you really don't have the money the only thing they can to is call and threaten...and they will. Two words "caller ID". Don't pick up the phone.

Do go to legal aid and see what you can do to get them off your back.
and once they are in collections you can work out a payment arrangement with collections.
I'm sending some good vibes your way. I hope things get better soon
:ghug:

Good luck.
Hopefully things worked themselves out by now? :plead:
Have you been to the Citizens Advice Bureau ?? I've heard they do really good things to help people with money problems and working out agreements to pay off Creditors in a manageable way .

In the uk now there is also debt counseling they will negotiate payments for you. I have been there done that when I divorced and had 2 children if the house goes do not worry not worth it. Go bankcrupt no stigma to it now you just cannot credit for a while. rent somewhere and pick yourself up again takes sometime but you can do it. Its surprising how much you learn from it.
Cassie
You need to go a debt agency TODAY who will stop you getting letters such as this, reduce your monthly payments and stop further credit charges.

I personally wouldn't recommend bankrupt status if you can avoid it as there are problems with getting credit in the future particuarly a mortgage, as the charges become crazy as you are seen as high risk.

The credit agency will guide you through the process and will stop anything happening with the credit card.

This will work out in the end.

Chin up and get on the phone to one of the credit agencies.

Take care

Cassie I'm so sorry you are having these problems. Hopefully by now you have contacted people to help you do what's best for everyone in this situation. I'm sure if you offer to pay the £50 a month you had budgeted for they would surely accept this?? Its better than nothing which is what they will get if you go bankcrupt!

Sending every good luck charm I can think of your way. Keep your chin up - you're always such a cheerful person - don't let it get you down.
Thank you all so much for the helpful and kind words. I phoned Debtline who gave me some great advice and I filled in one of their forms which helps you sort things out bit by bit, all obvious things but it helped me realise my situation could be a lot worse, no dependants and no catalogue or other debts etc, plus I have Greg to support me, even though he's on a low wage, a few bits of shopping like food and toiletries go a long, long way. And this time next year we will be out of debt, if all goes well. So I count myself lucky.

My mum stepped in thank goodness and paid it for me
I have set up the £50 a month to go into her account. Ugh I feel awful. But she said she would rather lend me the money than see me in trouble. I'm so grateful to her for helping me, she says it is the last time ever though. That's OK because I'm never borrowing money again. I guess my generation were encouraged to borrow, and learned the hard way that it's not the answer.

A lesson learned. Moving on... :phew:
:phew:

Thanks Mom! A mother's love knows no bounds.

I am glad you are feeling a little less stressed! Give your mom an extra hug... from ME! :D
Hmm, we don't do hugs :( I would love a huggy mum, but one who helps me out when I'm in trouble will do :D I will have to do something else, she will make me anyway
If I lived closer I would give you a hug if that would help. I'm sure Ru or Greg will oblige

Glad to hear you can see some light at the end of your tunnell.
:ghug: Always look for help to deal with institutions whether they are financial, health related or other things! Take care! Glad things have sorted themselves out.
I am happy to hear your Mum was able to help you out and you have found some solutions to your troubles. My favorite slogan is "There is only up from here." So that is where you are, now going up.

Good Luck!
Great to hear things are sorting themselves out and that your Mom was able to help you out
my heart goes out to you.. i too have lost my business after 28 yrs.. hang in there will send good vibes to you
