Your baby's favorite books

Hi all,

I need some ideas for really good baby books for Lily. My sister has a paperback swap membership, so I've been trading in some of my musty old never-gonna-read-em-again novels for books for Lily. But there are soooo many more baby books on the market then there were when i was little, I don't know what to ask for!

I've already got some of the classics: "Guess how much I love You", "Make Way for Ducklings", "Goodnight Moon", mother goose, complete beatrix potter...

What were/are your baby(ies)'s favorite bedtime and playtime books?

Anything by Eric Carle! The artwork is great and the stories are fun too.
Sorry, nothing good to add.. At that age, it was definitely nothing, and then all popup/ flip up books. There's an awesome series by Marion Dane Bauer. All of them get 5 *'s here! Never gets old!
I love the Dr Suess books!!! :D
Something about the rhythmical rhyming holds their attention easy.

Also good are Usborne books.
They are fun and educational. They are sold through parties - but here is the link to website:

My neice sells them - and they really are great. :D
My sister just found out she is having a baby girl, so I too am in the market for some baby books. Does anyone know any with sheepdogs?
Little Critter series by Mercer Meyer
I love the illustrations and the storyline for each of the books. They are paperbook and very cheap.
First in the series is Just for You.

Twas the Night Before Christmas - get a beautifully illustrated version.
Anything by Helen Lester

I love to read my 6 month old baby Wodney Wat and she loves it. Helen Lester is a retired elementary teacher and she always has a great story behind each book.

Also "On the day you were born" by Debra Frasier...I get the book and there's a beautiful video of author and Minnesota state orchestra reading the book...it's just beautiful! A great first birthday book to read every year on birthday.

Jamie Lee Curtis books are great as well.
I just read that anything they can touch is great for their development, so all those books that have fur patches for dogs, scales for lizards, etc.

So far I just have the usuals...Goodnight moon, Pat the Bunny, etc...
velveteen rabbit - some come in the touch versions (I just bought a stocking stuffer size for my 25 yo daughter :) ); jolly mon (a version comes with a cd and I gave it to my niece when she was little - my sister said she would have never thought to give a baby old jimmy buffet songs - but where does she think parakeets come from?)
Oh, I love Velveteen Rabbit!

And I love Jolly Mon! I was just thinking of one of my favorite JB songs today and need to play it for the baby...(Chanson our les petits enfants)

Oh, and I just got T Tikki Tikki Tembo...love the colors and the words.
Sybil highly recommends Control Of Canine Genetic Diseases by Dr Padgett DVM. She's loved it so much at the age of two that she consumed it cover to cover. Oh, I'm sorry, what I meant to say is she ATE both front and back covers

Way to go Sybil!

On a similar (odd) note, it jogged my memory of the book that Travis loved best - "Peterson's Field Guide to the Birds". Yep, he really did.
As soon as he could scoot on the floor, it was the book he pulled out of the bookcase. It was a soft cover edition, and he eventually had it so beat up, I bought us both new ones. Yes, I think he is the only 4 yr old who got an adult-geared bird book for a birthday present and was thrilled by it.
He still is a whiz at birds ID as an adult....go figure. :D

As a kid I loved Wild Animals I Have Known...

It was on the bottom shelf. Foolish me, I thought book shelves were for books, not her chew toys. Now I only use the upper shelves for books....

When I got to my parents' house I was shocked to see that they have "stuff" all over. Breakables even 8O With my 3-4 year or however old she is niece running around loose and tearing the place up 8O I immediately started "puppy proofing" the place and offered to lend them crates and ex-pens to keep her contained until they can get her trained

Since everything she owns has some peculiar critter known as "Dora" depicted on it, and since I was instructed to get her books pertaining to same, I presume this would be her book recommendation, but probably a bit old for a baby.

Oh, god, here she comes Must run. :sidestep:

Yes!! The adventures of Sebastian the super sleuth... Not really a baby book - more of a childrens book but fun to read. I have the whole collection!!
Where the Wild Things Are!!!
I read The Velveteen Rabbit for the first time a few weeks ago and bawled my eyes out! It's so sad.....

Books that don't make me cry: Harold and the Purple Crayon. Pat the Bunny.
The Velveteen Rabbit is a favorite of both my kids.
My mom read to me every day from Animals I Will Never Forget. It was a Reader's Digest book that I believe was a compliation of stories that had been published in their magazine. I LOVED that book.

I like all the books that have touch things on them, too. All the classics that have already been mentioned are wonderful choices. Also, one of my favorites is Let Me Hold You Longer by Karen Kingsbury. It'll make the kid  and you  .

In my book clubs, whenever someone had a baby, we gave them baby book showers. That was always fun and the Moms really appreciated it.
