Independent pottying?

Perhaps I am expecting too much too soon....

Bert is almost 5 months and is really good with the potty training. We rarely have accidents now. However....if he has to go and gives me the signals while I am in the middle of cooking or whatever, I let him out quickly and expect him to make it down the steps of the deck and go to his usual pee spot. He won't do it. Bert will just pee on the deck in front of the door and then he will sit in it wanting to come in.

If he has to go I usually take him out with me and we walk down the steps together. I like that he is attached to me but the cold weather is coming so it takes time to locate the winter coat and hat....

Bert had an accident this morning because I took too long getting dressed. I always reward him when he goes outside...although sometimes I don't have treats but just tell him he is a good boy and pet him. He knows where he should go.

Any suggestions????

Maybe you could toss a treat or a toy into the yard so he has to go down the steps to get it? At almost 5 months, though, I'd happily take any reliable peeing outside of the house as a bonus even if it was on the deck for awhile! He'll likely gain confidence about venturing out alone as he gets older. It could be he's just lazy, too. ;)
It might just be Bert's age. All the books say "house-broken by 6 months", and my Tonks was. But Tonks' sister Luna took almost 10. We did everything the same with them, but Luna was just different than Tonks. I was really worried, and talked with my vet often about it. She just said the same thing; every dog is different, and it might take some time.

And yes; cold winter months and house breaking pups ar the worst! We got Tonks and Luna in December, and in the beginning, when they had to go out like every hour? Good lord, it was a nightmare!
