Can I use lotion on the inside of an ear flap?

Clyde's ear is all dry and chapped from Owen giving him wet willies. I stop him every time I catch him licking the ear but it appears that it's already done a bit of damage. I cleaned his ear out and plucked all the hair but it looks a little flaky and red. Can I put a little unscented hypoallergenic lotion in there to moisturize the flap? I'm only hesitating because his ear was pretty gross and a little stinky and I don't want the added moisture from the lotion to add to all the goo that was in there. It doesn't look infected at all, just red around the flap.

If lotion is no good, does anyone have any other remedies for a dry ear? (Other than keeping Owen from licking, which we're working on and will be a lot more diligent about now.)

i dont think that a tiny amount of lotion would hurt...i would try and maybe keep his ears back until it completely dried....i know easier said than done.....
On a cotton wool ball you can use either "Whitch Hazel" or just plain old Baby oil to wipe the inside of the flap.

Squirt some onto the cotton wool ball and just wipe gently the inside flap to help.

Tell owen no more wet willies :P
Baby oil. Very good idea. Maybe it'll taste weird to Owen, too and it'll discourage the licking. He's so sneaky about it. They start out playing and it turns into no holds barred ear licking. It's seamless from the corner of my eye, too! Now we've really got an eye on it, though. I didn't realize it had gotten so out of hand.

that is so odd - Morgan has an ear fetish too  I always know when one of the dogs has an ear infection - Morgan is like a detector of some sort.

And I would say some baby oi or neosporin - in case it is raw it won;t get infected.
I always have a store of ottomax around so I started that. It's not raw yet, just flaky but it probably is on its way.

Kerry, now I'm wondering if it's a chicken o the egg situation. Maybe Clyde already had an are thing going on and Owen diagnosed it rather than caused it...
well I have Morgan "diagnose" dogs in his classes - he is never wrong
My yprkie is always trying to clean hubby's ears out. She is really diligent as well, but he gets a very sore ear (not from the licking) and has to put cream in. I always know when it is going to be bad. I wish she would clean Summers ears out for me!
Rufus has a baby oil fetish. It might encourage the ear licking.
I was thinking a thin layer of vaseline? It is the best moisturizer.
If it's not infected, I like stuff like A&D ointment or Eucerin cream (the thick stuff - in a tub).

Chewie has an ear licking fetish too - no dog, animal or human is safe.
