Gack! Need some menu help...

Ok guys. I'm calling on the help of the wise and knowing forum members. Lily's baptism is at the end of the month, and I'm having trouble planning the menu for the reception afterwards. There isn't going to be a TON of people- about 20 or so. The only thing I've decided on is Ham (from the honey baked ham store, mmmmm.....), wine, and beer (to pacify our guy friends). I also want a lamb cake (my sister had one when she was baptized, and I've been fixated on it for the last 26 years) which I'm having trouble finding.

So here's my quandry. The baptism is at 1pm, which means we'll be eating at about 2. Should I serve a lunch, or a brunch? And what should I serve besides ham???? Why is it that I had no problems planning and executing a tea luncheon for Dale's bridal shower, and am completly stumped on my daughter's baptim meal? Grr.

Help please. All suggestions are welcome, as well as a good place to get a yummy lamb cake. The local bakery doesn't do them.

Whats a lamb cake?A cake made of lamb or a cake shaped like a lamb?Probably a dumb question.
I cant find a recipe for my standby, corn and zucchini bake, its like a crustless quiche.
I make it so much I dont measure. You cook it the day before ,cut it up and serve it cold.It has grated zucchinis, grated carrots, grated cheese, chopped up bacon or ham, diced red or green peppers if you want, diced onion if you want, then mix all together, add enough beaten eggs to cover all ingredients ,mix through to make sure everythings well coated in egg and some is left sitting at edges,in a large square pyrex dish or a baking dish, and cook in oven about half an hour on moderate heat.Mixture should be about 3 inches thick from base to up side of pan.
Refrigerate overnight.
Some people add corn flour to the mix,I dont bother. Its always the first thing everyone goes for and perfect for brunch, lunch, whatever.
You can serve the ham cold with picnic style food: potato salad, baked beans, etc. If you want to go more formal have some au gratin potatoes and whatever fresh vegetables look appealing. Pretty easy do ahead stuff so you can enjoy the party :)
I have a wilton lamb cake mold that I make every easter I use coconut for the wool or sometimes use a star tip all over. then use cake iceing for flowers around the neck and jelly beans for nose and eyes. I would go with baked beans, potato salad and maybe a fruit platter and cheese platter Take it easy you need to enjoy the day Have things prepared ahead of time and if someone asks to help let them!!! oh and I always liked to use a punch bowl at christenings but always dumped a lot of punch , just thought it looked pretty I made an ice ring to float in it. Good luck , enjoy your day
cindy - my mom always made that lamb cake with the coconut for easter!!!! it really was quite easy - she used a box mix.

And I agree - go simple with salads and beans etc. And take lots of pictures
I used a pound cake recipe but did cheat a time or two with a box pound cake My adult kids still ask if I am making it for easter!!
I've never understood the whole baked beans for events thing. I guess since my family never did it! But it seems like baked beans are used a lot at events!

I'd say do a lunch instead of a brunch. I'd say do the ham, do a potato salad, maybe do a green salad. Biscuits would be good. Oh, and people here always seem to serve little mini meatballs in a crockpot at functions. Again, don't know why  I'm a healthy girl, so I'd like to go to an event with a salad and some fruit...

oh that sounds good - the pound cake. I know th emold is still at my parents empty house up her e- but I wouldn't give my little sister the satisfaction of going over there and being seen on her video camers (looooong story). wonder if they still make that mold? or I can always come for easter dinner
or I could lend you the mold  could you see all our dogs running in my fields (maybe an easter egg hunt!!)
cool - all the boys at least
i would do some rolls with the ham, so people can make sandwiches, if they want...

id also do a cold bean salad, green salad, potato salad, cheese and crudette platter...easy stuff that people can either make a meal out of or pick at....
Ham dictates scalloped potatoes, which you can cheat and make out of a box. Put them on when you get home and they'll be cooked by the time you get everything ready to serve. I also feel sweet potatoes (in the form of the sweet potato casserole with brown sugar and butter and other goodness) is called for.

You can get the lamb cake mold at Michael's or Hooby Lobby, or any place that sells cake decorating stuff. Frost with vanilla frosting (or chocolate if you want a baa baa black sheep) and press coconut all over. Little pink candies for eyes and don't forget a bow around her neck.

And pictures of Lily and the cake are required.

is this the closed mold or a flat cakepan mold?
Thanks for the ideas guys. Scalloped potatoes is a great idea. I was thinking about doing sandwiches, so I thought maybe I could provide a selection of deli sliced cheeses too (that way people can have just plain cheese sandwiches if they don't like ham. One of our friends is a super picky eater). I can have my in-laws bring fruit and veggie trays. Meatballs are a good idea, but is that too much meat along with the ham??? Maybe I could do a carved watermelon? That would be good, but maybe expensive this time of year... I'm not a big baked bean fan, except with brats or hamburgers.

I'd make my own lamb cake but I'm a little hesitant. I want it to look really nice, and I have to be the worlds worst cake decorator. It'll taste like heaven, and end up looking like poo. Hmm... that can always be a last resort though.

So-
ham, fruit, veggies, cheese, potatoes maybe meatballs... any other ideas
Kerry, I've only seen the closed mold for the lamb cake. Not that I look for lamb cake molds very often though....
dont forget some dips too...

clam dip, french onion dip, artichoke dip (costco), hummus........
Wilton's makes the lamb pans, which might be available at local cake decorating stores. this time of year, I doub if Micheals, target or Walmart have the lamb pans in stock.
Don't want to make it? Go by the cake decorating store and ask for the names of their customers who make cakes for sale. Some of the employees usually have a side business......
I would do it for you, but it would horrible after shipping...
