A Paws for thought.

For all intents and purposes a dog show is a place for you to show your dog to a judge for their impartial opinion according to their interpretation of the breed standard, with the highlight of the day when you become the ticket or even the “Best of Breed” with your wonderful showpiece.

Furthermore dog shows give breeders the chance to study the stud dogs available at that moment in time and allows the breeder to study a dog closer when that particular dog fits into the breed lines. Breeders and exhibitors alike can compare their dog / bitch to the other examples being shown.

Shows are also a very important event for potential puppy buyers allowing them to meet breeders and to gather information about the breed, it also allows them to see the work involved in keeping an OES in best form regarding grooming.

In actual fact, things are sometimes quite different and we are at some shows experiencing very questionable decisions from the judges present, sometimes to an extent that the majority of exhibitors go home visibly annoyed with the results.

In actual fact sometimes it seems that either the judge is ignoring the standard in favour of a certain exhibitor but unfortunately to the disadvantage of our lovely breed or they are completely unaware of the contents and meaning in our breed standard.

An excellent should only be given to a dog who comes very close to the ideal standard and the dog should be in outstanding condition, showing all the typical criteria known in our breed.

For example, should a dog who is missing a tooth but meets all other criteria in the breed standard be awarded a very good ?, should a bitch who is 27,5” high but a beautiful specimen of our breed with wonderful movement be awarded a very good ? or should a dog with a short coat but with good profusion and harsh texture be awarded a very good ?.

These are just some of the examples we are seeing at shows today, although in the standard a complete scissor bite is mentioned I personally think it is not such a serious problem when a tooth is missing as long as the overall criteria in the standard are met.

As far as a large bitch is concerned there is nothing in the standard about a maximum height stated is only a minimum height and upwards, therefore these bitches should not be left to the mercy of a single judges opinion.

More and more judges are being blended by length of coat and forgetting that Quality, texture and profusion are to be considered above mere length, to such an extent more and more dogs in Europe are being clipped to achieve the natural outline again.

On the contrary a dog or bitch who does not have the minimum height can never come close to the ideal standard and therefore it is questionable if the dog should be awarded the Excellent let alone the Best of Breed.

I cannot change things, but for the sake of our wonderful breed I sincerely hope we see some changes in the foreseeable future, there are still an abundance of unprejudiced judges who carry out their task very professionally but unfortunately we are seeing more and more influence in our breed caused by bad judging under the motto “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine” which is definitely not going to help our breed or the work of dedicated breeders.

I hope you don't think I'm taking these quotes out of context, but perhaps talking to these other exhibitors will put some wheels in motion. I understand the politics of the show industry to some extent, but it seems to me an uprising is on the cards?
What you are saying here and what you have expressed before is so, so upsetting. Surely others besides yourself who have dedicated a large portion of their lives to keeping the breed standard would speak out against this if you all got together? Even if you have no idea of the outcome, or an exact plan of how things should change, talking about it with others may bring about new ideas? Who is to say nothing can change?

Perhaps more steadfast guidelines should be considered? I know that is a huge thing to ask, especially when tradition dictates, but judges are obviously not sticking to the ones already in place. If it's that obvious that boundaries are being broken, and people are winning because of favouritism, that is straight up cheating. Cheating the breed above all.

Can anything be done?
there must be some way to have decisions reviewed? if not why not become a judge your self?
