Weight

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering how much a healthy sheepdog should weight at 8 months. Paxton weights 80 pounds. Is this too much?

Thanks,

Magda

It really depends on the individual dog, its pedigree and overall health. Healthy dogs range from 50 to 100 pounds. The best way to know for sure is to ask your vet or your breeder what he or she thinks.
Yeah, it really does require a hands on and eyes on to determine that. What is is fat:muscle ratio? He might be just fine. Feel him......she should not be "well stuffed" but neither lean like an athlete.....as a growing pup. As his muscle, tendons, ligaments finish developing he can increase his physcial activity and convert that baby fat...if any...to lean, hard muscle.
duffy is 9 months and only weighs 60
My sheepie will be 1 year old next week and he's about 95 lbs (5 lbs heavier than his father). He's neutered, and I read somewhere that makes them bigger. He has a fat butt, but I can feel his ribs fine, so I'm not worried. He is a good runner at the dog park, but does seem to tire before the leaner standard poodles and whippets.

Hi,

Oliver was about 80lbs at 8 months, and is now exactly a year and is about 90lbs. He is actually quite lean still as he is pretty tall for a sheepie and I expect he will begin to fill out properly now and will likely be over 100lbs, maybe 110 by the time he is fully mature. I think it is mostly to do with genetics- his mother was a big girl and his dad was a good size as he is not the best eater; he can be very picky. We also know his 4 year old step brother (from the same mother but different father) and he is about 120lbs and a very big dog, but super fit and with a neck like a tree stump. Oliver is an English OES and most of the sheepies I know from the UK seem to be on the larger end of the breed standard weights.

So 80lbs is fine! Just make sure he gets the right amount of exercise. There is a balance between doing too little and doing too much. His joints are under strain as they grow, especially if he is a big puppy, and need to be treated gently to avoid hip trouble later on in life. Also avoid too much stairs and jumping down onto hard surfaces, such as from the back of a high car or truck.

Enjoy!
WOW makes me glad I have a girl! She is only 68 lb.
Tonks and Luna are a year old and a mere 60+ pounds. I wanted bigger dogs, but since there are the two of them, i guess its probably a bit easier this way.

I'd have your vet look at your dog. They'll know if he is over or under weight for the age/size.
